Funny convo with my mailman this afternoon

Funny story, I was outside shooting around in my driveway when my mailman came up to me and was like hey looks like you're getting bigger, that's good. He asked me ya know how many days are u lifting blah blah, then he goes off and starts telling me how he used to work out and he made his best gains when he started to do 20 rep squats, deadlifting and doing one exercise per body part for 3 sets, 2 or 3 days a week, compound exercises. He goes did you ever do concentration curls? I was like yea i have, but dont anymore, and he goes fuck that shit, you gotta do the big movements like rows, then he goes you want more bang for your buck lol. He said once he changed his style to 2 or 3 days a week with somewhat of a limited volume concentrating only on the compound movements he gained 30 lbs in a few months. He also told me that he used to live in brooklyn, and he was in the gym in brooklyn where lou ferrigno was lifting at, the scene right after lou and his father get out of the car. Checked it out and i saw him lifting in the background, lol. Just thought it was funny how my mailman used to lift back in the days when arnold was lifting and everyone was doing those long ass overtraining workouts that are in all the books, and my mailman lifting during the same time period was doing 20 reps and limited volume. HAHA my mailman.

Cool story

yea, i just looked again he's actually working out when ferrigno works out at R&J's Health studio, he's over by the guy doing pulldowns. He actually lives around the block from me too and has a nice little setup in his garage.

You talkin about pumping iron?

Dave

It's always an awkward moment when someone starts talking to you about weight training and "what they used to do" just because most people don't have a clue and you don't want to hurt their feelings or seem dubious that they built an incredible physique (now coincidentally gone) off some pulley contraption in their basement. It's great though to find someone who does. Even funnier that he was in a movie. Definitely a classic conversation.

My aunt has this friend that's in his 70s that we had breakfast with one time, she told me he liked to work out or some such vague thing. It turns out this guy knows Arnold real well. Goes out to the Classic every year and hangs out with him. He used to train OL in York PA when it was a hotbed and even lifted in the same gym as Paul Anderson for a time - said Anderson used to walk in cold, load up the squat bar, and bang out 700 for reps no equipment. He had some great stories and this guy still has a full setup in his basement - rack, bumper plates and all. We went and lifted one night. Fun stuff. Who'd have guessed.

I always knew my mailman was cool, in the summer if i was ever outside shooting around in my driveway he'd always drop his shit and shoot a few with me, but this made him a lot cooler lol. Really was a classic conversation.

exactly

Thats cool,
I just get the lame excuses why people don't workout anymore. BUT, they used to be hardcore....back in the day.

that's awsome
I agree it is very akward when someone starts tellingyou about how they used to lift
or train for martial arts
or pretty much anything you are passionate about
