I agree, this is definately your best bet, I've actually this exact same thing happen, I was friends with her for around 2 years and then we went out, because your friends already you just have to do it gradually with little hints and see how it goes from there.

Friends are typically the nice, well-behaved, "safe" guys.

Do a few bad-boy things and see how she reacts. As much as a woman talks about wanting her BF to be "sensitive" and her "best friend", she'll go for the guy with a bad-boy edge on him every time.
