Zyg is 100 percent correct, which frankly, is a shock. There is almost as much bullshit circulaiting about stretching as there is about weight training.
Get the book "beyond stretching" by Pavel T(somegoddamnrussiamname) He gives the details Zyg is ommitting for symplistical sake.
The two stretches Zyglamail describes are exactly right.
I used to be extremely flexable (both kinds of splits without a warm up) after years of traditional Martial arts. Combination of 3, yes 3 time being hit on my motorcycles, and getting a bit older I have lots allot of it though.
The splits is a silly goal though. You only need to be about 1" more flexable than the maximum range of motion for your sport. Any thing beyond that is a waste of training time.
