Totally depends on what you are using it for... For overall health benefits, it supplies omega-3 and omega-6 essential fatty acids. It is beneficial at lowering cholesteral, blood pressure, and is good for any bowel disorders. On the other hand, Fish Body Oils are much better for lubricating your joints and improving overall brain function, due to their EPA and DHA content. Fish oil is also much better for your skin. You will probably benefit more from Fish Oil versus flax seed.

Flax seed oil also helps your testosterone levels ALOT,
and ALOT more than terrestris or zma,so the next time your getting a test booster get flax.

Check out George Spellwin's article on flaxseed oil up top, i think you should have one in the mail as well. But he's selling it pretty cheap right now.

to add to what ~HOUNDOG~ stated.

EFA's are essential to the production of many hormones, testosterone being one of the most important. when on a cutting diet, uping the macros for fats is a good way to keep the test pumping and the calories for long lasting energy.

im not monstar... but i been taking it since monday and i cad feel a difference here what it did for me
smoothend appetite
really got my bowels moving
smoother skin
energy hh mmmmm im gonna scratch my head for that one though
i can go on but i think the article and the other posts pretty much sums it up.i take it with about 3-5 ounces of caffiene free diet coke since i almost gaged from it.

damn wheres that little vomiting icon when i need it:(

I find it pretty helpful. Cuts down on appetite for me and also seems to make my joints feel good.

Ive used flax seed oil in the past but I've been sticking to just eating peanut butter because of taste and the fact that I buy peanut butter already (in bulk I consume alot of it)

Wonder if I should use flax I'm hesitant since I wonder if I get enough omegas 3s w/ my generous peanut consumtption or not. Since adding flax means cutting down on my peanut butter intake which I love I'm hesistant.

I find flax to be pretty helpful. However, its so hard to stomach. I can taste it all day, gotta find something to kill the flavor or some other alternative.

Try different suppliers of Flax seed oil. I've found a variety that tastes fine, so I don't have problems drinking the stuff.

What brand is that?

I live in the UK, and I don't think that the brand I use is available outside here.

I've also tried Omega Nutrition Flax Seed Oil which was also not too bad. This might be available in the US/Canada.

George,

We all know that flax oil looses its properties if not refrigerated all the time and if shaken thouroughly. How come you sell it online?

I never understood how you could buy this stuff online - it would arrive at your house completely useless...

That taste of flax is nasty...all you need to do is put a little SUAGR FREE KOOL AID in there and blend up the flax, it will cover up that nasty taste and make it into a neutral taste. You will need only about 33% of the kool aid packet to get this done right...everyone PLEASE STOP DRINKING FLAX BY ITSELF!!! Sugar free Calorie Free KOOL AID!!!!

It is good stuff I use it in my shakes to slow the absorption down. Can't even taste it :)

It was my understanding that once the seal was broken it should be refrigerated. Other than that it's cool to leave out.

The mass quantities flax oil doesnt taste bad at all. I actually like it. I guess it helps with lots of things the only thing i really notice is that it makes me "regular".

Don't waste your money on the pills. You won't get enough EFA's with them. Buy the oil something like Udo's Choice is a good mix of all the good fats.

Mixing it with your protein shakes is the best way to drink it without feeling that nasty taste.

what about hemp oil? Anyone used that? It is supposed to have omega 3, 6, and 9 in it. Protein factory has it.

But if shaking excessively destroys it's useful properties, wouldn't putting it in a shake ruin it? Or do you add it after you've made the shake? Just wondering...

I mix mine with my protein shake I tak to work with me in the morning. Since I have been taking it I have noticed quite a few benefits....all of which were outlined in previous posts.

Flax Seed Oil is good stuff!

I've been taking the stuff for just under a month now. 1 tablespoon/3 times a day, I have noticed that it regulates my bowels. That's about all I feel it doing, but how is flax supposed to make you feel? It's good for the body in many ways, you just don't feel it working cuz it doesn't work like that! My body temp rises a bit when I take it though. One tip I can give is this...NEVER mix it with water! Very nasty stuff, it sits at the top and it's really really gross. I just take it on its own with juice or water as a chaser. goes down much better.

Try Flax Meal instead - Instead of drinking oil

Flax oil can get expensive (barlenes, etc)

consider this:

purchase flax SEEDS from health food store "bulk area" at between 89 cents to $1.19 per lb.

purchase / locate small "hand held" coffee bean grinder (neighbor gave me one) http://members.aol.com/ricnakk/photos/grinder.jpg

grind up flax seed - turning it into flax meal

place crushed flax seeds (meal) into airtight container and place in freezer.

Use as needed - scoop three tbs into protein shake

for a meal - scoop six tbs into six ounces hot water (microwaved coffee cup), stir until thickend - add sugar free maple syrup and you have some of the best tasting porrige (like oatmeal) only better.

Price: about 10% of what buying the oil costs (save 90%) and you gaurantee freshness because you crack open the seeds.

1 cup of ground flaxseed weighs 100 grams and contains 16 tbs each weighing 6.3 grams. Since the seed contains roughly 35-40% oil, 1 level tb (15 cc) contains about 2200-2500 mg of oil. 1 cc of ground flaxseed contains 135-155 mg of oil. 1 cup of flaxseed makes about 1.6 cups ground flaxseed.

Go to Beyond-a-century.com and buy their BHT powder, it is a fat-soluble antioxidant. Mix into a new bottle of flax oil, about 1/4 teaspoon and it will protect the oil from oxidation. BHT is pretty cheap, something like 8 bucks for 300 grams.

Shaking up the bottle of flax oil speeds up the rate of oxidation, due to the air you are trapping in the oil. This process is not immediate, but happens slowly over time. Likewise, mixing up a shake with flax oil will not destroy the oil, this is a gradual process.

I've been talking to a dietitian who has done a lot of research on flax. I'm not quite sure why, but she reccomends both 1 TBS of oil AND a TBS of meal each day.

Flax

I take them in capsule form, no disgusting taste. I hear it is supposed to aid in fat loss. So far (a week) I've noticed my skin is much healthier looking. Thats always good.

You got all that in less than a week?! It took me at least 2 to notice any of that, 3 weeks until I noticed my skin was smoother.

I'm finishing up a bottle of Flax from Mass Quantities. I have a question about it, though. All of the little dark spots are gone and it's not as dark as it was at first. It's mostly just yellow now. Is there something wrong with it? I shake the bottle every time I pour out a tablespoon so it's all mixed up but it's not dark any longer. What do you think? (I've used Barlean's before and have never noticed this before.)

Hmmm... am I the ONLY person who's broken out from this stuff??? It makes my skin damn oily (and I dont have oily skin to begin with either ~ my skin is normal). And, I get all broken out on my shoulders and upper arms (this didnt happen until I started flax). I have since discontined flax and my skin is clearing up.

And Im not a pimply-faced pubescent kid either...Im 30 yrs old!

Thank GOD it hasnt made my face break out (that much). And thats weird enough...a 30 yr old gettin zits on his face (only one or two).

Theres MY experience with flax seed oil. As far as the taste...for God's sake, get over it...it just tastes kinda wheaty/grassy like.:fro:

Just wanted to mention that since I have put 3 tbsps of ground up flax in my morning shake and 3 tbsps of oil before bed my libido has increased considerably!! I suspected that it enhanced test production but now I am convinced!!!

Ultimate Nutrition makes it in a Soft-Gel capsule...I have recently started taking two 1000 mg. capsules a day...

you are taking between a 20th and a 10th of the effective dose. Do yourself a favor, take about 20 of those pills a day until the bottle is finished, then buy the oil.

I'm taking organic flax oil sold in my local hippy health food store - because they don't display it in the sunny window like holland and barrett!!! They keep it in the fridge, small bottles, about a fiver each. I'm regular anyway, haven't noticed a difference there....

I've been talking to a dietitian who has done a lot of research on flax. I'm not quite sure why, but she reccomends both 1 TBS of oil AND a TBS of meal each day.

Your dietician is likely recommending the flax meal for its high fiber and protein content, in addition to its healthy fat content. She's probably recommending the oil for a concentrated dose of omega-3s (not realizing that the omega-3s provided by flax are short chain, and thus converted at a very low rate ((1-5%)) to the long-chain omega-3s usuable by the human body).

A tablespoon of flax meal is very much on the low side. Eat it like any oatmeal-type product or mix it in with shakes at about 20%. Flax meal will contain ~50% fat, ~30% carbs, ~20% protein.

I'd go 3 or 4 tablespoons of oil at least if I was supplementing with the oil. (and this would still lead to a conversion rate far below that of what a lot of doctors are recommending as beneficial) (you basically get about 25 mgs - 125 mgs of long-chain omega-3s per 2.5 grams of short-chain omega-3s (what you see on the label) in flax oil; many advocate a minimum dosage of 2.5 grams of useable (long-chain) omega-3s each day.

Flax meal has some value as a protein and fiber source (and if added to shakes helps to slow down digestion).

Fish oil is a better choice for omega-3s as its omega-3 content is long-chain.

Golden advice. I cannot stress strongly enough that not only is fish oil cheaper (at least where I live) but it will have a more positive health benefit than flax seed oil. Flax is all pretty much contain ALA, which is like, a pre-DHA, whereas fish oil has DHA in it. The importance of this mechanism currently escapes me but I'm sure you can Wiki/Google it.

Flax seed science for bodybuilding was great, fish oil science is newer. And better.

In my opinion.

Trez

i once cosumed Flax Oil daily until i did a bit more research.
I'm always sceptical about products kept in dark bottles and this confirms my scepticism.
RANCIDITY-
Flax Oilhas been heavily promoted for years as 'esential' for health, and many people force themselves to take a tablespoon daily, even though they don't loike the taste. This is misguided, according to Dr.PEAT, who considersit"the most carcinogenic of oils"! The British alternative medical newsletter, What Doctors Don't Tell You, carried out exhaustive tests on all the brands of Flax Oil sold in London. They found that most were rancid, which is dangerous because rancidity promotes cancer. Two were not rancid, but the magazine reported that they turned rancid after a few days of refrigeration.

Next time a health professional urges you to consume this oil, ask why it comes in a dark bottle and must be refrigerated after opened. Commonsense dictates that this because it is highly unstable and readily break downs into free radicals. If that doesn't scare you, this should: under the influence of unsaturated fats(including Flax Oil) brain cells swell, and their shape and interactions are altered.
As for the so-called, much-touted 'essential fatty acids', consider this quote from Dr.Peat's book:
Essential fatty acids are, according to the textbooks, linoleic acid and linolenic acid, and they are supposed to have the status of 'vitamins,' which must be taken in the diet to make life possible. However, we are able to synthesise our own unsaterated fats when we don't eat the EFA, so they are not 'essential.' The term thus appears to be a misnomer.
(M.E Hanke, BIOCHEMISTRY, Encycl. Brir. Book of the Year, 1948).

I have read other research discrediting Flax Oil aswell , but i thought i would post this little bit on Flax Oil for anyone interested.
I know consume coconut and cod liver oil thats seem to be much safer and have more health benifits.

so what was the point of flax oil?........................gjohnson5, you say you use olive and safflower oil which is much cheaper. then why is flax oil promoted so much and stands out of the whole unsaturated fats crowd? I never had good results with flax oil. Coconut oil was banging when i used it. good energy, bigger weights, better recovery.

Fat is a much bigger bang for you buck!

1 gram of ________________ = #calories
protien = ~3-4
carbs = 4
fat = 9

If your going to have fat, pick one that is hign in Omegas!
Like Flax

Explain! Doesn't that mean that logically it would cause you to create more estrogen? Just like Soy milk does? Then why do people claim it increases their libido so much?!?

I don't know the answer to this - I was just putting this information out there, because many people diss soy (I don't drink it cause don't like it), and yet have flaxseeds.

BUT - the photoestrogen in Soy are isoflavanes, whereas in Flax its ligans. Don't know if there any different

well just to throw in my 2 cents. weither it be flax oil or fish oil i dont think you cant go wrong with them. they both provide omega fatty acid and its better to take one than nothing at all?

I agree with the earlier posts suggesting grinding Flax Seeds.
One of my local health food stores sells 'North Dakota" flax seeds for $1.49/lb.
The golden flax seeds are slightly more.

I bought Flax pre-milled at Wal-mart for around $3/box. Not sure about the brand name.

I add 2-3 TBS of flax seed oil to no fat cottage cheese, or low fat yogurt... delicious! Yogurt is part of my breakfast... the flax seed oil makes it more healthier, but also tastier to me... I add 2-3 TBS to no fat cottage cheese, or low fat yogurt... delicious!

So, can I take Flax Seed oil in softgel form? Some of the posts here suggest otherwise.

Yes, Flax Oil is available in gelcaps/softgels.

Flax Oil (liquid) - less expensive than pills, short shelf-life (keeps poorly)
Flax Oil Pills - expensive, keeps ok (any product with fat can go rancid)
Whole Flax Seeds - cheap, keep well (but may need to be ground for full benefit)
Milled Flax Seeds - cheapest, keeps well (but prob. not as well as the whole seeds)

Wal-mart sells the pre-ground flax seeds.
HODGSON MILL is the brand. Comes in 12oz boxes.

The Hodgson Mill site has the 12oz boxes of Milled Gold Flax for $3.85, Milled Brown Flax for $2.55.
Flax Seed Products | Hodgson Mill
According to their nutritional facts, both contain 2.6g of Omega-3's per serving.
However, I suspect there is a nutritional difference between Golden & Brown flax.
milled_flax_seed-healthy_foods.jpg

For the record: Flax is beneficial, but not near as beneficial as Fish Oil (EPA/DHA).
However, I think you should take both. Omega-3's are badarse.

I've heard Flax might be high in estrogen, though.
Anyone else see any resarch on this?

Has anyone looked at the omega muscle from protein factory? It has fish oil and flax seed. I just got mine today. Along with cfm whey iso, oat protein, and sweet potato powder.
