Figure/Fitness/BB competitors. Let's talk about Beautifying for competition.

I've been reading a lot of competition logs and am intrigued by all the beautification steps taken for competition. QT went and had something painful done to her eyebrows, I think. Hopefully, she will elaborate on that for us. :D

What do you do to make yourself beautiful for competition?

Hair?
Nails?
Makeup - I know MAC cosmetics, right?
fake eyelashes?
fake hair?

share your beauty info here. thanks.

LOL Oh the most painful part of competing, haha.

For me I always get my hair freshly highlighted, and cut, just alittle I like my long hair :)
I don't go with fake hair cause I have enough of my own, and I stlye it myself also.

Nails I go get some put on.

Makeup yup MAC! ;)

And for sure some fake eyelashes.

I do not go and get anything waxed and sh*t hurts way too much for me, I can't deal with it at all. lol Yea yea go ahead call me a big baby, I'm not going to deny it. lol

The stuff I did:

- professional make-up
- another competitor did my hair - for BB, really best to have it up off your shoulders so you don't have to fuck w/ the hair flip thing. Also I have fine hair so when I start sweating or get under lights it is guaranteed to go limp- so I plastered it up & back.
- had gotten it colored a week or so before to let the highlights settle.
- fake eyelashes - ref: makeup artist
- fake tan - (lol this should not be a problem for Shorty...) - I did several layers of airbrush protan. I DON'T recommend doing layers of protan on your face --- it cakes and then cracks over the course of competition day. And then I discovered that it also comes off when you brush your teeth if you happened to drool at all....
- nails - got done AFTER last layer of protan so the nails don't get f'd up.
- did my own toenails - I don't have enough toenail on my little toes to do a french manicure thingy
- make sure your suits fit tight & don't fall off. I had no problems at all w/ my suits - have never used Bikini Bite or anything. On the ties I always put safety pins on the end of the strings and use that first to help string thru the little loops that are hopefully there on the bottoms and also wrap the strings around and pin the ends on the inside of the bottoms -- i.e. DO NOT TIE A KNOT IN THOSE STRINGS... you will never get out of it.
-- Also, if you have to "go" after you get tied into the suit, don't attempt to take off the bottoms... "go" around it. There ain't NUTTIN graceful about competition so toss any thoughts of being ladylike & proper. Its all about not fucking up the tan or the suit once it's on.

Additional BB considerations:
- have a couple extra copies of your music on CD & clearly labeled.

LOL I see that little asain torcher queen normally she does my eyebrows not just for competition. It is called threading I like it better then waxing as it dosen't pull on the skin of the eyebrows like wax does.

Hair depends I put the clip in at my night show and liked that more then having it down. For BB I believe if it is longer then shoulder length you have to put it up. The other thing with hair down is it gets flat by the time the night show comes.

Nails I get a french manicure on both hands and feet keep it simple you don't want anything over powering.

For makeup I always go to Mac NW45 matches protan great last time I brought in my suits and got the girl to put a colour scheme together for me that was not to over powering. I really like what she came up with everything just poped. Fake eyelashes are a must but dam practice them with faux nails + faux lashes = royal pain in the ass to get on.

lolol

being a woman is a pain in the ass. :D I'd like to see Quadsweep putting on fake eyelashes and getting his nails done for competition. ;)

LMAO @ getting a boner onstage.....I can't imagine! :lmao:

I did:
*False eyelashes - practiced a LOT so I was good @ doing them
*Fake nails - got them done a few months beforehand to get used to them, plus a friend needed to learn how so I got them for free
*Tanned in a booth for a few months b4hand too, but didn't tan my face at all....used Maybelline Dream Mousse makeup in the darkest shade they had (cocoa?). 6 coats of Protan on the bod.
*Eye makeup was burgundies as I was told not to match makeup to suit
*Hair - just wore it normal as mine is above my shoulders & not long enough to flip - may wear it up next time tho....
*Used a bronzer over my protan @ the venue which evened out the Protan & shimmered a bit....

And I know a lot of people use Pam over top of their tanner but you may want to check with the promoter as I know of sites that won't allow it....

For BB - I *really* suggest having your hair above your shoulders period. No time for flips.

Pam - depends on the show - I've been at really quality shows where the expeditors have towel mitts already sprayed down w/ Pam and they pat you down. I've also been to shows that have nothing set up for anything like this. In that case Almond Oil is actually pretty nice. -- Definitely check w/ the promoter to see what, if anything, they will have set up, but bring your own anyway.

yep. hair up. I can't stand having my hair down and being sweaty at the same time.

Helps if there's no A/C either!! bleh!

Well I had a lot of input for my show as to what to do... Let me dig my notes up here....

So some Figure competitor info:

This is some per Shadow's recommendations, and the girls' here, and some of my friends'

-2 weeks out started exfoliating and applying aloe vera gel. Make sure you exfoliate all parts thoroughly. For some reason I must have not been very good on my right inner thigh because the protan would not take as well and the skin was a bit flakey. So all skin off!!!!
-7 days out stop tanning
-I full body waxed 3 days before. Make sure there is enough time to let the skin calm down before pro tan application. Most painful thing I did in my whole life. You're already on edge from the dieting down and emotions are already high... the try and have somebody rip all your hair out when there is no fat to cushion the blow. Agree with Miss 24 = BLOWS I will do partial waxing next time around....
-2 weeks out I did a over the counter teeth whitener
-2 weeks out I recommend for dying the hair if you are a red head just because you'll want to go darker then you can shampoo the color to where you need it to be for the show day.
-Sleep and naps were my best friend for both beauty, and mood enhancement!!
-Played with hair quite a bit out from my show so I could take a poll as to what would look best.
-Picked jewelry out to match suits
-Practiced walking more like I lacked in posing in those heels, but do break them in
-nails done after protan, well I had them on and someone else did my last coat I just put like petroleum jelly on them so they didn't get stained.
-Definitely practice make-up and hair before show WITH nails!!!!! You may practice without theose babies but once they are on it takes some talent to not only get used to having them on, but putting fake lashes on without poking youreyeball out!!! Also there are some really cool fakies with little rhinestones on them they looked sweet on this girl I did up.
-Agreed with SuperQT about the MAC. I bought the darkest brand they had for my friend's show. I had to put a ton of lotion on her face because it was SOOO dry and then mix lotion in with the foundation and a tiny bit of protan to blend the color out and it matched beautifully!
-Also love Mac's liquid gel line for eyeliner, that stuff works wonders and looks very intense on, but natural on stage.
-Hair.... Well I prefer to work with dirty hair over clean hair. It definitely holds the style better then clean hair. I like using hot rollers letting them cool to the touch, then applying some hair spray putting the hair up, pinning it whichever way 'it' wants to play, and spraying again. Nothing worse then fighting with hair, and it will stay a LOT longer if you go with it's natural tendancies. My friend's stayed all day and night out at the club dancing..
-And finally SMILE. This was one of the hardest things for me. you don't realize how many other things you are focusing on on that stage.. that the smile is the first to leave when you are concentrating on making sure that: quad is flexed, abs are tight, shoulders tight but not earrings, lats flared, delts hard, forearms relaxed, breathing, eye contact with the judges, and then the posing overall... Lots going on so practice way in advance!!!!
HAVE FUN

P.S. bring baby wipes to the show because it is discusting having PAM all over and walking around like a buttered turkey!!

If you're doign your own makeup - get someone at the MAC counter who has experience doing stage makeup to do it so it looks good on stage & not good in normal lighting & washed out under the lights.

you're one tough woman. I can't even bring myself to wax my legs. :worried:

Yeah really....Yikes!!

I just shaved everything....but cut myself - Protan WILL cover scabs!!

Believe me.... I will NEVER, NEVER, NEVER do that again!!! I think I even posted that in my log :lmao: I can handle most of it like arms, face. Not legs, and arm pits I could do again if I did it like starting now and let the hair thin back out because it's actually not bad once the hair texture changes.... but boy that first time is like meeting God!!!!

And with some people like me, the hair NEVER thins out or changes texture so EVERY time is like the 1st! :worried:

my friend didn't let hers grow long enough in the armpits and tweezed the rest out, OUCHHHHHHH that scared me away.

good tip on the exfoliating. what does the aloe vera do?
Well that was all per Shadow recommendation. It helps keep the skin moist and is what he always used. It's kinda stickey as well so watch the clothes you wear because it will leave little greasy marks on them. I noticed it did work better then lotion because it was like a film. So I took a shower applied that and it almost sealed in the moisture from the shower and slowed soaked in over time.

OMG I don't know how you let them wax all of you, I was cursing like there was no tomorrow (I had only my underarms, and bikini done) I wanted to punch the woman so bad, lol

She felt sooo bad too!!! Like my hair grows crazy in all directions as well to add on top of it. So she kept missing spots, rewaxing spots, it was TORTURE!
Especially after she would then give up on a section and ie. the tweezers came to my armpits!!! AHHHHHHHHHHHH I had no energy to flee... I did not break one tear at all. Until I sat in my car. I was determined not to let her see me cry. That is definitely a way to get a person to admit to a crime. I'm sure it's as bad as what they used to do by sticking nails up under people's nails to get them to spill their guts! I went into military background mode and took it like a man. Then again I think any man would have been crying. :lmao:

S.....I was going to get into this a bit later - but Im glad you posted this.

I have someone in mind that I want you to get with a bit later.....

I know I think the same, how in the hell do they go through with the brazilian. :worried:

F that. When I did my first show I had gotten a promo razor in the mail - one of the really expensive good men's razors and I saved it until about a month out from my competition and started this ritual shaving of everything (no not "weird" ritual) -- but just to get myself in the mindset of "I am a competitor" and I was in it for the full run. I've done that ever since & pretty much cannot deal w/ stubble, period.

Aloe vera - anything you can do to keep your skin moist & supple prior to the protan phase will work to your advantage. The tanning is brutal enough, but then go into the water deplete phase & the protanning and your skin will start to drive you nuts. By the night show you want to scratch your face off but you can't because then you'll protan flake under the bright lights. Its bad enough people will start asking if your face is falling off the day after the show.

we need to invent something better. I'd suggest henna, but we'd all be orange.

You should be sitting pretty good w/ the melanotan, no? It is completely retarded what we do to stand around on stage and see who looks the best, but there's just something so 'exhibitionist' about it tho. Like its the unspoken statement that "Yea, I'm competing." And then most people stand there in awe of you.

You have to admit its a damn ego feed when you get to show time.

YEAH NO DOUBT. I wanted to scratch my eyeballs out as well they were itching so bad. We should also talk about post show issues!!! It took me 3 weeks to get all that pro tan off, and my skin on my upper back has changed! It's all bumpy now. I take pro activ and a scrubber and go after it and that has helped. It's kind of a humbbling experience going from over maintenance to slowly dropping all that maintenance off.

yes. the melanotan will help a lot. it will be kind of fun seeing just how dark I can get with that stuff. I haven't taken any since early November - went to Hawaii over Christmas and got really dark again without it.

ego feed. yeah, I guess it is. the whole "look at me" thing that none of us likes to admit we want.

I know it does. lolol I owned a boutique type store several years ago. I got dressed up every day - full makeup, nails, etc. I don't miss it. :D

It's more fun now getting fixed up - because I don't HAVE to do it every day.

What is protan made out of? Sounds suspiciously like wood varnish.

LOL I try to bring a level of professionalism to my office -- bunch of software guys. The developers are nerds and the ops guys smell funny. The head sales guy is hawt & dresses like a sales guy but he's too short for my taste. (Fuckin' short guys...) I'm the only female on the exec staff so I gotta represent!

At least its not 80's Power Suit days anymore, but in this crowd, if you show up w/ clean underwear & matching socks you are probably doing pretty good....

I've only ever met one IT guy that could dress right.

You're right on about the 80 power suits. Remember the big shoulder pads? We all looked like linebackers.

Yes they feel a bit heavy and I would pick them off after a day :)

I wish i had something to add to this but I don't .. other than a waxing experience which is no better than anyone elses lol but no tweazers OUCH.

Thanks for sharing ladies!

What can I do b/c I cannot really tan in a tanning booth? Rely on protan alone? Im afraid Im going to be too orange :worried:

I remember seeing pictures of a guy who won his competition while being green from whatever tanning agent he used. :D he was REALLY white to begin with, and didn't tan prior to the show. he won, anyway. not that this is going to help you, but it reminded me. lolol

sorry.

I don't know if this will work, but what if you used a good sunless tanning agent before applying the protan?

Este Lauder makes a good one - and I'm sure there are others that are just as good or better. My mom is totally white, and she swears by ban de soleil. makes her brown - not orange.

what I'm not sure of is if the protan on top of it will cause cracking or funny colors or whatever. someone else will know this, I'm sure.

There was a girl who was fish belly white who did my show and had gotten protan sprayed w/ several layers and looked pretty good on stage. The only way you'll know if you turn color is if you experiment w/ it. I kinda don't think you will -- the worst I've heard is when people use JanTana.

Why is protan so much better than dreamtan and why is dreamtan banned?

Protan goes on in several layers that you put on, let dry, then rinse off the excess, repeat. Dreamtan never really "dries" - its more like a cream you can put on literally AT the show. The problem is that it tends to also rub off on everythign that you touch or brush up against. Its just very messy. I imagine you could also leave a slime spot on the floor or soemthing and another competitor could slip in it or on stage as well.

oi, I wonder why they even make it anymore. thanks for the info!

I did see a guy at one of my shows use Dreamtan in the morning - or essentially sat around in it for about 4 hrs and then took a shower and looked pretty good w/o having the wetness. Frankly he looked too shiny when he just put it on -- sorta like he had just rolled in some curry.

I imagine people still use it for touch ups, photo shoots, etc. This stuff isn't just for BB...

I haven't heard of DreamTan being banned everywhere but it's probably venue to venue depending on how much of a mess was made the last time....

Buns - buy a bottle of Protan & experiment a month or so ahead of time on a patch to see how it looks.....

One girl here did not tan at all before her show and all she used was protan and Jan Tana. MANY MANY coats but she got dark, and she was stark white. Things you also have to consider is if the protan makes you turn a greenish color you may want another product like Jantana to even you out... I don't turn green, but a few of the other's girls did. I mixed both last year.

Fake Eyelashes rhinestones or not you're going to feel like you have giant spiders on your eyes... You will want to rip them off all day. :lmao:

I think it also depends on the kind of JanTana as the people I saw that got spray tanned with JanTana looked perfect. I might not mess with doing my own colour next show and just cough up the extra cash less stress that way.

Hey Bunz - this is straight from a response to an email I sent to Jan Tana (at jantana.com):

I recommend none of my competitors tan in a bed or in the sun. My brother died of Melanoma and that is why I started making my products. She only needs to go on line at www.jantana.com and click on Competition Tanning and purchase the On Stage Hi-Definition Color Kit with Jenny Lynn picture beside of it. It will give her The Winning Color just like it does everyone else. She will look amazing.

Jan Tana

Granted you can hear different suggestions from different people & their experiences w/ the various tanning products, so I thought, well shit, just like QT says - I've seen Jan Tana at shows doing complementary spray jobs and figured I'd ask the lady herself.

I personally have always used at least 3 layers of Protan after several weeks of tanning bed and never had problems. But that's my skin after my base building --- that may be completely irrelevant to anyone else's skin & base.

I'd say experiment. I'm sure LOTS of girls would love to hear true life experience w/ no tanning involved at all. Tanning will tighten your skin some, but otherwise, it does beat the shit out of los dermos.

Dreamtan tends to work for people with dark skin like myself. The sheen works well against dark skin and highlights since that's what we need on stage as opposed to a lot more color.

For makeup I always go to Mac NW45 matches protan great last time I brought in my suits and got the girl to put a colour scheme together for me that was not to over powering. I really like what she came up with everything just poped. Fake eyelashes are a must but dam practice them with faux nails + faux lashes = royal pain in the ass to get on.

forgot to tell you -

when I pluck my brows, I put Anbesol on them first. It's a topical pain killer for your gums/teeth, but works excellent on the brows.
