WASHINGTON — Members of extremist groups have signed up as school bus drivers in the United States, counterterror officials said Friday, in a cautionary bulletin to police. An FBI spokesman said "parents and children have nothing to fear."

Asked about the alert notice, the FBI's Rich Kolko said "there are no threats, no plots and no history leading us to believe there is any reason for concern," although law enforcement agencies around the country were asked to watch out for kids' safety.

The bulletin, parts of which were read to The Associated Press, did not say how often foreign extremists have sought to acquire licenses to drive school buses, or where. It was sent Friday as part of what officials said was a routine FBI and Homeland Security Department advisory to local law enforcement.

It noted "recent suspicious activity" by foreigners who either drive school buses or are licensed to drive them, according to a counterterror official who read parts of the document to The Associated Press.

Foreigners under recent investigation include "some with ties to extremist groups" who have been able to "purchase buses and acquire licenses," the bulletin says.

But Homeland Security and the FBI "have no information indicating these individuals are involved in a terrorist plot against the homeland," it says. The memo also notes: "Most attempts by foreign nationals in the United States to acquire school bus licenses to drive them are legitimate."

Kolko said the bulletin was sent merely as an educational tool to help local police identify and respond to any suspicious activity.

It was not immediately clear whether the extremists intended to do with the school buses. One counterterror official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the issue, said it was likely that the foreigners investigated were merely employed as bus drivers, and did not intend to use them as part of any terror plot.

I hate to say it, but if you want to make the entire world hate terrorists and love america again, just have them blow up a few school buses.

These idiots will destroy their own cause sooner or later. Look at iraq, many of them hate terrorists and they should. they are crazed killers and nothing more.

Fucking idiots, they will wait till they blow up a bus or 2 & innocent people die before any action is taken.

ok, there are muslims signing up to drive your children to school, who would love to do nothing more than blow up countless men, women, and children, so they can fuck 70 virgins in heaven - BUT YOU BETTER NOT DARE WORRY OR JUDGE!

The fact that there are muslins driving kids to school doesn't cause me concern. The fact that there are muslims who are tied to extremist groups causes me great concern.

judging radical extremists = racist.

Like I said though, if they do it'll polarize the terror issue in a way you can't believe. The scummy terrorists took over a school in Chechnya, and wait and see what the world will do if they take over a US school bus. Some things are off limits in a war.

the world felt bad for the school kids in chechnya, but now everyone (for the most part) has completely forgotten about it.

I don't know. Look at how 9/11 polarized the world. In Iran people were holding candlelight vigils for the US, and France was saying 'we are all americans'.

We should ideally stop this from happening, the publicize their plan for the world to see. The terror war is fundamentally a psychology war, and this'll be amajor boost for us.

why even have a bulletin? u don't think people aren't already suspicious of ANY middle-eastern male taking any kind of secure or important job? what can people do? report 'hey some middle eastern guy applied for a school bus driver position'? Sure sounds like racism to me. ACLU would go apeshit.

The problem is if you go to Pakistan or Indonesia (where 1/3 of the world's muslims live) support for Bin Ladin runs in the 40-60% range. That is higher than president elect George Bush's approval ratings. I don't know if that translates into support for terror, but support for terrorists is high.

So people are right to be suspicious of any mideast man. Its gonig to strain the hell out of US/muslim relations but a nation full of terror sympathizers is no good. When people from a nation where support for terrorists is in the 50%+ range start moving here and wanting jobs as bus drivers then people need to be suspicious.

Maybe I'm wrong though, while researching poll numbers I came across this.
