Fat gain and antideppresants

Hey wats up bros....Around ! month ago, I started taking 5-HTP (L-Tryptophan) to help me out with my mood swings and battle my occasional bouts with deppression. Well recently (like 1 wk and a half after starting the 5HTP) I started noticing that for no reason at all I went up in weight on the scale (its not muscle, since i took measurements). Now I've heard that antideppresant medications are notorious for causing people to gain fat.....as a matter of fact, I was witness to this2 yrs ago when I took Prozac for 2 months and right away, like in the first month for no reason at all ( i ate and trained just the same) i went up like 10 pds of fat. Now since 5HTP increases seratonin in the brain and overall improves mood, I was wondering if it would have the same effect on makin me gain fat weight. Does it slow down your metabolism and make you gain weight...or does it make u retain water or something, such as is the case with antideppresants. What do u all think...any experiences or info on this??

L-Tryptophan is actually an amino acid, commonly found in turkey. 5-htp L-Tryptophan is apparently a slightly modified form of L-Tryptophan but derived from plant sources.

I was under the impression a serotonin deficiency is associated with the brains perception of hunger and therefor raising serotonin levels should have the opposite effect you are getting.

No No No No nonononononon

5HTP is the next step in the chain from tryptophan... that is to say, tryptophan is the pre-cursor to 5HTP. It is correct only to say that supplemental 5HTP is from plant (griffonia seed) origin.

It (the conversion) goes: tryptophan -to- 5HTP -to- Tryptamine (serotonin).

The 5HTP is not causing your fat gain.. for reasons that I cannot be arsed to go into. It's a fantastic supplement actually - very succesful in allowing people to avoid or reduce anti-depressants. 5HTP was developed to get around the ridiculous tryptophan ban (that I cannot be bothered to go into).

But no... 5HTP is not causing your fat gain.

go to www.uspto.gov and go to the patents database and click on patent number and enter 5,795,895

this patent is directed at the use of an anti-depressant in combination with another drug (Bill Romanowski's demise) for weight LOSS.

Hi, I don’t know what the heck you are talking about, but I will add my 2 cents.

I have taken prozac for 10 years, did not make me gain or lose weight,

Started Paxil about 5 months ago, weight gain was one of the many side affects of this worthless chemical,

I also take xanax, has no affect on me in anyway, unless I don’t take it, but it does not affect my weight.

to all those using anti-depressants. Buy some Inositol (a b vitamin). Take between 4g and 15g a day (it isn't toxic). Also take a good quality b-complex.

See if you can reduce your anti-deps. You may be able to. Inositol helps serotonin and other neurotransmitters function. It is proven. Check out www.biosychiatry.com/inositol.

Also lots of information regarding 5htp at this site...

l-trypptophan is better than 5-htp and it shouldmt cause fat gain tryotpophan supplaments boost fat gain and hgh production
