Family Dinners

Who sits down with their family for dinner? It's such an important thing to sit down and eat, talk about your day, reconnect, tell stories, ect.

Anyone here do this for the evening meal? How many times a week?

We had slacked off due to scheduling and now are trying to do it again every night.

We do as well. Its a must. Promptly at 6:30. My parents enforced this when we were little and I do with my kids. Its actually entertaining.

We always do when we are all home. Hubby has been getting home late lately so it has been me and the kids. We all sit at the table and eat together.

I don't even sit down to eat. No need to, I can devour whatever is in front of me before I could even pull out a chair.

We need to establish a consistant time too! The kids are so cute. As soon as we sit down my DS who is 4 says, "So, mommy, how was your day?" which is just hilarious because I see him all day!

growing up my family had dinner at 6pm sharp EVERY day.

In order for me to miss that, I had to have a REALLY good excuse. It was mandatory otherwise. If I was 5 minutes late, then there were problems.

You too? Everyone laughs because I eat so fast. I guess I got in the habit from always being on the go. My mom always used to tell me "do you even taste your food when you eat it" I eat too fast. Others take like 30 minutes to eat and I am done in 5.

We didn't either before we had kids. We were all about our desks and the couch. Now we have a nice table to eat at as well as a bar or else the carpet would have little kid food all over it. :worried:

I've been yelled at all my life for how fast I eat. Mother, father, girlfriends, fiancee ,etc.

you have a good mom. :artist:

Ok since I was already thinking about dinner I gotta go make it!!! TTYL!

Have good dinners wheather it be over the sink (don't forget to rinse it out) or around the table!

Growing up we did every night and every morning.

Working with my family now, I have breakfast and dinner with them a few times a week still. My parents, brother, nephew and his wife, my cousin and his family, my other cousin and her daughter and my aunt all live within in 10 miles of each other or so and we get together a lot. My aunt and uncle from OK are looking to move up here too so there will be even more family around soon.

Having everyone so close is cool for keeping in touch and spending holidays together. Even though my poor dogs aren't allowed to go.

generally. . .yes. . .but during tax season i'm usually "eating dinner" around 2am. . .and "dinner" is usually some steamed veggies, 100g's of vanilla whey protien mixed with water, a 32oz bottle of flavored (but unsweetened) seltzer water and a small glass of fairly dry red wine to untanlge my frazzled nerves so i can get 3 or 4 hours of sleep before i do it again. . .tax season ain't very family-friendly. . .

Yes. Me and the wife. Generally every night after we walk the dogs. We had to change the dog walk route recently to a shorter route with no hills (her being 7 months preggers and all). We go around once and she goes home and the dogs and I walk a little more.

only when we can all gather around the short wave and listen to the grand ole operey afterward. That earnest tubbs is a hoot and a holler!

(I did it as a kid but its kinda an antiquated practice now IMO)

If the family dinner is an antiquated practice I hope I never "get with the times" and become modern.

My family stopped the whole family dinner thing when I was about 13. Both of my parents worked - conflicting schedules, long hours - and they knew my brother and I could fend for ourselves.

Now my mother cooks dinner for my father every night, but she doesn't eat, so he sits at the table alone. That makes me a little sad, so when I'm home visiting I always sit with him.

I eat so slowly. It must be so annoying to the people eating with me. Everyone will be done and I'll have taken like 3 bites. I think I talk too much.

lol I think you are pretty normal. If we go out to eat with people I am sitting waiting watching others eat for the next 30 minutes.

My friends say I eat slow too.

we average 4 meals a week then usually eat out friday nights and have a big family dinner on sunday after church. I like it and now even more so because it's rare and more special to me.

That pressure to have to be at the dinner table everynight made him hate religeon.

and it made him smug

Breakfast was 6am on the dot. If I wasn't downstairs in my plaid skirt helping my dad with the crossword puzzle.....it was my ass.
Dinner, well, it depended on if my dad was home. If he wasn't.....it didn't matter. If my dad was home/back in town for dinner, I was to be at the table by 5:30....and pretend it was the case even when he wasn't in town.
Now, my son is 3 months old. I hope we have real dinner when he is older. It's what I want for the family. Right now, it's not like that.

I have a memory from pre-kindergarten where i just wouldn't stfu, and was talking to everyone - even shouting across the room to peeps at different tables. People kept telling me to eat, and maybe i would take a nibble but then ignore my food. the demands intensified until like 10 kids just kept yelling for me to eat..everytime i opened my mouth somebody would scream "EAAAAAAAAAAAAAAATTTT!!!!"

funny, cause i wolf down my food now

we dont
of the three of us, mostly we are all eating different dinners at different times

growing up, we always had family dinners but we had 4 kids and a Mom who stayed at home.

Many times I dont even get home from work until 7 or 8pm.

We do it, but not sitting around the table, per say. We sit at the bar in the kitchen while we eat and we talk there about the day. A couple of kids grab their grub and take it to the dining room so they can see TV.

Only on special occasions do we all sit around the dining room table and say grace as a group. Now I'm feeling like a bad parent, my mom had us do that every night. :worried:

I can understand that. Sometimes when DH is MIA at dinner time (often) I would just forgo the whole thing and we would have a "picnic" in the livingroom with grilled cheese and I would have a shake. It sucks trying to eat with just my kids. :(

is there a table even big enough to fit your entire fam? lol you have lots of kids

the thing about our house is that we are very close. we talk all the time,. we sit together in the living room and have conversations, or in the kitchen, etc. when we pick up teh boy from karate afterschool, we always talk in teh car about how his day was, etc.

anyways, when you live in the house with lumberg, there is ALWAYS lots of talking.

OH! pffft! Don't feel like a bad parent. Sometimes when DH isn't here my kids sit up at the bar and I sit on the counter with my feet in the sink. Sometimes I even have my laptop. No THAT was bad!!!

I'm just trying to sit down and eat with them with conversation. Sounds like you are doing that already. That's really cool.

Thanks C'mom. Since reading this thread we are still hanging at the bar for chow, but I've got us saying grace as a group again first.

Mrs Longhorn likes it and she was a little surprised when she asked me why I started doing that again. :)

i try to have a family meal together every night if everyone is home. If not, whoever is home (they are usually home by dinner) sits down.

Sundays I make an early dinner. Yesterday I made cream of mushroom soup (slow cooker) and panko crusted chicken sandwhiches.

It's going to be less than typical when the weather gets nicer. Bri has all kinds of soccer and softball practices coming up, so we will NOT be sitting down as a family to eat 2-gether.
