Why Supplement During Training
Intra-workout supplements are designated to be taken during a workout to enhance performance and provide energy and amino acids to your muscles. Normally the process of training will lead to a catabolic state of the body. Training leads to drops in muscle glycogen, less hydration, a decline in amino acid levels will lead to inferior performance. In order to perform at maximum potential the body must be replenished to return maximum power output. As mentioned many times when cortisol sky rockets, testosterone drops by almost 40% which can be detrimental to muscle and health as well. There are many ways to take care of cortisol during training as well electrolyte balance, glycogen, ATP, minerals/vitamins, muscle tissue and hydration. Two supplements come into mind when for intra supplement purposes, Gear and NTBM’s new intra sublingual chewables. I am going to break down why these two supps come strong in protecting muscles during training.
ATP
ATP also known as adenosine-5'-triphosphate is a multifunctional bond of molecules used within cells as a coenzyme. It is the major energy exchange of the cell which provides the energy for almost all of the energy-usage activities of the cell. ATP transports chemical energy within cells for metabolism. It is synthesized by photophosphorylation and cellular respiration. ATP is used by enzymes and structural proteins in many cellular processes, including biosynthetic reactions, motility, and cell replication. ATP consists of adenosine composed of an adenine ring and a ribose sugar and three phosphate groups. ATP can be produced by reduced reactions using simple and complex carbohydrates or lipids as an energy source. For ATP to be synthesized from complex fuels, they first need to be broken down into their basic components. Carbohydrates are hydrolysed into simple sugars, such as glucose and fructose. Fats (triglycerides) are metabolised to give fatty acids and glycerol. This process is called glycolysis. Another way in which ATP is synthesized is through cellular respiration within the mitochondrial cells of the body. ATP increases alertness by activating nerve impulses which can be extremely beneficial to athletes who compete. ATP is also responsible for maintaining cell volume through osmosis. ATP is vital for en durance athletes since it lets the body know when oxygen needs to produced due to lack of it within the muscle tissues. For years athletes have taken creatine to produce more ATP within the muscles, but lately companies have released products with actual ATP. The problem with oral ATP is that stomach acids destroy it before it can be synthesized in the liver. However; if taken sublingually, it will be transported to the blood through the saliva enzymes. This is why NTBM made their intra-product as a sublingual chewable; we want the user to receive the maximum potential of ATP. This now brings us to the next ingredient in NTBM’s new chewable sublingual intra supplement
Creatine Pyruvate
If you have experienced the power of this raw from Ancient Strength, then wait till you try it in sublingual form. Creatine pyruvate is molecule that combines both creatine monohydrate (67-8%) and pyruvic acid (40%). The percentage exceeds 100% because of the conversion factor of creatine monohydrate into creatine pyruvate. Both creatines are impressive ergogenic aid enhancers and have been highly praised for building muscle while lowering body fat percentage. The performance-enhancing effects of creatine monohydrate and pyruvate are combined for the to boost of energy and endurance which is much needed during a workout. Creatine restores the main energy supply instantly available to muscles occupied in short, powerful contractions aka power output. Creatine pyruvate has been shown to buffer lactic acid quite well. Increasing creatine intake through the pyruvate bond allows muscle to go for prolonged periods of time. Pyruvate stimulates glucose release from blood into muscle tissues during exercise and even at rest. Creatine Pyruvate is also noted to be ten times more soluble than either Creatine or Pyruvate and it is also more bioavailable; so that it takes less to do the job. Here is a that shows creatine pyruvates ergogenic capabilities:
“This increase is accompanied by a significant increase in force (p<0.001) and relaxation velocity (p<0.01) in the Cr-Pyr group. e effect of Cr-Pyr resulted from an increased contraction and relaxation speed and is accompanied by enhanced oxygen consumption and blood flow. Cr-Pyr reduces fatigability during all following intervals. The improvement results from an increase in contraction velocity during all intervals and an increase in relaxation velocity [31]. This suggests ADP or Pi levels are reduced and ATP re-synthesis is increased during exercise, which should lead to an increased VO2. In fact, the improvement in performance is accompanied by an increase in muscular VO2 measured during the breaks. there are some studies showing that VO2 during exercise is unaffected [9], or the VO2- kinetics is even slowed down after creatine supplementation [44] and oxygen consumption after exercise of high intensity or during breaks is unchanged [45]. The observed results suggest additional pyruvate benefits in the Cr-Pyr group. The role of pyruvate supplementation might be to decrease the relative inhibition on aerobic glycolysis due to elevated creatine phosphate and ATP levels. It may also be reflective of a more rapid regeneration of ATP and reduction in the inorganic phosphate increase, allowing for higher intracellular calcium ion concentration, permitting the higher frequency contraction and relaxation. Cr-Pyr supplementation significantly increases mean power in high intensity exercise. Cr-Pyr intake significantly increases force and decreases fatigability during all intervals due to an enhanced contraction and relaxation velocity. The performance with Cr-Cit decreases with time and improvements were not significant during the later intervals. Further research is required to exam the mechanism of decreasing fatigue during intermittent exercise of high intensity observed with Cr-Pyr intake.” (

Cordyceps S. CS4
Cordyceps helps increase stamina, energy levels, and endurance through increasing ATP levels as well. It’s also been used as a herbal medicine in helping respiratory issues along dysfunctional immune systems. There are individuals who also use to help them fight off cancer which shows how potent Cordyceps capabilities are. It increases ATP through increasing mitochondrial cell count which allows muscle tissue to have more intake of oxygen, making it ideal for power output athletes that will need continuous spurts of ATP such as powerlifters, Football Players and MMA fighters. Cordyceps has also been shown to act like HCG in increasing testosterone. Both hCG and LH also take 3 hours to reach their optimal effect. What’s more, the LH molecule is a protein-sugar chain – a glycoprotein – and it’s the sugar part that attaches to the LH receptor. It seems that cordyceps contains sugars or glycoproteins that resemble LH and imitate the way it works. The substance found in Cordyceps that does boost testosterone, makes it through the digestive canal, and the undamaged cordyceps works better than the specific extracts.
Rhodiola Rosea controls stress AND increases ATP
More AMPK means more mitochondria, more fat burning and an increased uptake of glucose by the muscles. You can prevent diabetes-2 by getting more physical exercise, and physical exercise also stimulates that same AMPK. Because some people can’t be bothered with exercise, some are now pinning their hopes on the scientific search for an effective AMPK boo
Many natural medicine practitioners have used Rhodiola rosea for years to treat diabetes-2, high blood pressure, chronic fatigue and respiratory disturbances.
Chinese researchers exposed rats’ muscle cells in test tubes for 90 minutes to salidroside an active substance in Rhodiola rosea.
The salidrosides in rhodiola triggers muscle cells to absorb more glucose. This ability to strore more glucose in more muscles, means more glycogen. More glycogen means less cortisol again, not sure if you are seeing a pattern to these ingredients, and their ability to prevent huge releases in cortisol through glycogen retention. Here is an extract showing positive effects of Rhodiola intake:

Abstract
PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of acute and 4-week Rhodiola rosea intake on physical capacity, muscle strength, speed of limb movement, reaction time, and attention.
METHODS: PHASE I: A double blind placebo-controlled randomized study (n= 24) was performed, consisting of 2 sessions (2 days per session). Day 1: One hour after acute Rhodiola rosea intake (R, 200-mg Rhodiola rosea extract containing 3% rosavin + 1% salidroside plus 500 mg starch) or placebo (P, 700 mg starch) speed of limb movement (plate tapping test), aural and visual reaction time, and the ability to sustain attention (Fepsy Vigilance test) were assessed. Day 2: Following the same intake procedure as on day 1, maximal isometric knee-extension torque and endurance exercise capacity were tested. Following a 5-day washout period, the experimental procedure was repeated, with the treatment regimens being switched between groups (session 2). PHASE II: A double blind placebo-controlled study (n = 12) was performed. Subjects underwent sessions 3 and 4, identical to Phase I, separated by a 4-week R/P intake, during which subjects ingested 200 mg R/P per day.
RESULTS: PHASE I: Compared with P, acute R intake in Phase I increased (p <.05) time to exhaustion from 16.8 +/- 0.7 min to 17.2+/- 0.8 min. Accordingly, VO2peak (p <.05) and VCO2peak (p<.05) increased during R compared to P from 50.9 +/- 1.8 ml x min(-1) x kg(- )1 to 52.9 +/- 2.7 ml x min(-10) x kg(-1) (VO2peak) and from 60.0 +/- 2.3 ml x min(-1) x kg(-1) to 63.5+/- 2.7 ml x min(-1) x kg(-1) (VCO2peak). Pulmonary ventilation (p =.07) tended to increase more during R than during P (P: 115.9+/- 7.7 L/min; R: 124.8 +/- 7.7 L/min). All other parameters remained unchanged. PHASE II: Four-week R intake did not alter any of the variables measured.
CONCLUSION: Acute Rhodiola rosea intake can improve endurance exercise capacity in young healthy volunteers. This response was not altered by prior daily 4-week Rhodiola intake.”
Magnesium
Oral magnesium can cause serious stomach discomfort since it’s not that soluble, it also gets destroyed by stomach acids. I for one get the runs after intaking oral magnesium, however sublingual magnesium does not give the same side effects as oral magnesium. This is the main reason why we chose to include it in the intra supplement. Magnesium is a vital mineral/vitamin and important electrolyte. It prevents muscle spasms from forming through relaxing the muscles/nerves. It gets heavily depleted during training from the sweat one’s glands release from preventing the body from overheating. This is why it’s so common to see people get cramps when playing sports or lifting weights, they don’t have time at the moment to drink a sports beverage. Magnesium works in combination with other electrolytes to maintain hydration and proper muscle function. Magnesium is very demanded by the heart to help with the contractions the heart takes on to pump blood throughout the body, including muscles. Magnesium also aids in digestion of macro nutrients which leads to more glycogen uptake, glycogen allows the muscles use glucose as fuel during training to prevent cortisol from eating away at the muscles. Magnesium also has been documented to boost both total and free testosterone. Free testosterone is crucial for muscle and strength since it’s the actual useable testosterone needed for anabolism. It is able to free up testosterone by SHBG modulation, here is excerpt demonstrating magnesium’s effect on free testosterone and SHBG’s:
“A biochromatographic approach is developed to measure for the first time thermodynamic data and magnesium (Mg2+) effect for the binding of testosterone (TT) to sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG) in a wide temperature range. For this, the SHBG was immobilized on a chromatographic support. It was established that this novel SHBG column was stable during an extended period of time. The affinity of TT to SHBG is high and changes slightly with the Mg2+ concentration because the number of Mg2+ linked to binding is low. The determination of the testosterone retention with the steroid hormone at different Mg2+ concentrations and temperatures demonstrated that the Mg2+ binding heat effect associated with this Mg2+ release or uptake during this binding was in magnitude around 17 kJ/mol corresponding to the model describing the electrostatic attraction that occurs between the negatively charged non specific areas of SHBG and the positively charged of magnesium. At all the magnesium concentrations studied, the ΔH values were negative due to van der Waals interactions and hydrogen bonding which are engaged at the complex interface confirming strong TT–SHBG hydrogen bond networks. As well, the ΔS values were all positive due to hydrophobic forces in the testosterone–SHBG complex formation. In addition our results suggest that adaptive conformational transitions contribute to the specific testosterone–SHBG complex formation. As well, in the biological Mg2+ concentration domain, it was clearly demonstrated that there was an uncompetitive inhibition of Mg2+ on TT–SHBG binding which led an enhancement of bioavailable TT. Our work indicated that our biochromatographic approach could soon become very attractive for study other SHBG–steroid (or phytoestrogen) binding.”( Journal of Pharmaceutical and Biomedical Analysis, doi:10.1016/j.jpba.2008.10.041)
Electrolytes impact on training
As mentioned before electrolytes play a key role in hydration and muscle contraction. Just like magnesium, both Potassium and Sodium are needed for the heart to function at its maximum potential. If you have too little or too much of both of these electrolytes, it can be dangerous, if highly excessive it leads to death. Since the kidneys process potassium, potassium just like sodium should be taken in small increments. This method allows your body to utilize the electrolytes without over stimulating your heart or kidneys. As we all know too much salt causes bloating which leads to high blood pressure. Both potassium and water counter the effect to balance things out. I always recommend water with electrolytes to aid the kidneys in getting rid of the excess electrolytes. Besides Magnesium, sodium and potassium are the two most secreted electrolytes from sweat which is why NTBM intra supplement includes these two electrolytes along the wonder mineral/electrolytes magnesium.
Vitamin B-12
This Vitamin plays a major role in the production of blood; because of this factor it augments the effectiveness of ATP. When there is more ATP in the body, more blood is carried to the muscle which in turn buffers lactic. When ATP and Vitamin B-12 are taken at the same time it has a more prolific effect on muscular endurance than creatine which has been used for this purpose from the beginning. Vitamin B-12 also makes an ideal addition to an intra supplement because of its anti-chronic fatigue fighting properties, this why patients with anemia take Vitamin B12 on a daily basis. Vitamin B-12 gives you much cleaner energy than stimulants without the crash while allowing you to have a better sleep pattern. This is makes it the perfect workout enhancer for a late night lifting session. Studies show that patients who took B-12 during the trial had less occurrences of waking up during bed rest. Vitamin B-12 is also beneficial in aiding production of endogenous ATP through electron exchange in the cytochrome oxidase transfer. Researchers have noticed that when B-12 is used sublingually the delivery is much more potent which is why NTBM uses B-12 in this form.
