Earphone connection wont fit into ipod touch

Was fine for ages but it suddenly does not fit in all the way....Ive tried toothpicks, pins,compressed air and still wont solve the problem...I've got an appointment on Thursday with my nearest Apple store at the genius bar does anybody have any tips on how to sort this to save me from traveling all that way to the store?

The best way will probably be to open it up and clear out whatever is blocking it.

Maybe try some suction with a vacuum cleaner after prodding around in there?
