I must admit, when I was about to inject for the very first time a couple of weeks ago I was shaking like a 12 year old girl. I wasn't scared of the needle, more of hitting the sciatic nerve in my glute, which you WILL know about if you do. I've seen a lot of new guys asking how to pin on a lot of forums so I thought I'd give some simple, reassuring advice to any newbies who might need it.
There are plenty of pin sites, I did my quad this morning, which was by far the most painful pin I've done so far. So from now on I'm sticking to the ventrogluteal muscle (glute).
1. To draw from a vial, first wipe down the top of the vial with an alcohol wipe, get a sterile syringe and needle, hold like you're holding a pen and draw in air to the amount you want. So if you want 1ml, pull back to 1ml. Insert needle into the vial and push, this should draw in the right amount of oil. If not, pull back a bit or push so you have the correct dosage. Pull needle out of the vial and tap it a few times so that any bubbles disappear.
2. After drawing from your vial, replace that needle with a NEW sterile one.
3. Think of your right or left bum cheek as a square. Draw an imaginary line down the middle of one cheek and do the same across so you've got a cross shape. The upper, outer quadrant is where you want to pin. So for your left cheek, top left. Right cheek, top right. This is a safe zone, away from the sciatic nerve.
4. Get an alcohol wipe and clean your pin site, a couple of circles going from the middle outwards. Get your site nice and clean to minimize the risk of infection.
5. Push the needle in at a 90 degree angle. This is the scary part for most new guys. Is it going to hurt? Short answer is a little bit. The only thing you feel is a tiny pinch as the needle breaks the skin. After that and you start pushing in, you feel absolutely nothing. If you do feel something, it's because you've knicked a nerve. No worries, just pull out and repeat the process.
6. DRAW BACK. Before injecting, pull back to ensure that you are not injecting into a vein. YOU DO NOT INJECT INTO VEINS! If there is blood, pull out and repeat the process. If there's nothing, you're good to go, so start to push down slowly. Take your time, there's no rush.
7. After the oil has been injected, pull out slowly. Put your used needle in a 'sharps bin' or somewhere safe before throwing away. Never reuse needles, not even your own. Wipe your injection site with some more alcohol to clean it. Then you are done.
It does not hurt, trust me. Your skin has things called cutaneous nerves. These are sensory receptors that recognize pain. After you've broken the skin, there are no more of these nerves. So, no more pain. There are other nerves of course all over your body, but you can avoid them if you know where to pin. It's as easy as one, two, three. I hope this helps anyone who isn't sure about pinning. I know I could have done with some reassurance when I first pinned. The only think I got from a friend was, 'If you hit your sciatic nerve, you're going to scream like a b*tch'.
This is my advice and opinion. I am not a medical professional. If you have any doubts or want proper guidance, give your doctor a visit.
