Seriously, I need a solid answer to this question. Once I have the information, then we can continue with the Hi-Jinx.

Yeah I figured Husky, but then I started searching and found that there are many different breeds of Husky.

I want to get my son a pup for Christmas, and he flips over wolves so I am trying to get as close as possible to them without going over into the actual "part" wolf gene pool.

I'm looking at some Siberians right now at petfinder.com, they are nice looking animals for sure, I hear they are very protective over children too, big plus!

my mom had one and it was a fuckin awesome dog, loved our family like it was one of us.

My friend has a wolf hybrid, UNBELIEVABLY smart... almost scary. Opens doors(round knobs too!), poops in the toilet, riduculously loyal, but good god, do NOT show up at their house when they aren't home if the dog doesn't know you. Rottweilers, dobies, german sheps... yeah they can all be scary, but a f'ing wolf showing it's teeth at you, you're just not going to get very far.

I have to say though, if you want the ultimate loyalty, go w/ a shepherd, great dogs. Although, all of the wolf breeds are fairly similar in terms of loyalty/protectiveness. Long hair breeds will take their toll on your house and car though, make sure you can budget biweekly groomings, and good ones at that.

Good stuff, thanks!

Get a dobie. Great with kids, super smart, active enough to keep up with you, few health problems, short hair so they aren't miserable in the summer, and super loving.

Alaskan Malamute.....and wolves vary tremendously in their appearance......they can be snow white or coal black or anywhere in between. Can range from 55 lbs to 130 or more. Straight tails or curled, long coats or very short and wiry.

Huskies will shed a lot. Be prepared.

But be advised Malamutes are not very aggressive if that is what you want! They will lick the robber's hand as he rifles the silver!

Alaskan Malamutes are really cool. They look a little wolf like, but they are terrific. I had one when I was a kid until someone stole it from the back yard. =-(

Your dog does look like a wolf, is it the Husky/wolf hybrid?

How did you come up with it's name?
He's a shepherd mix, with what I don't know. He had a tumor removed two years ago and it was biopsied. The vet said it was a very common tumor in wolves so he may have some wolf. My ex-wife had a huskey/wolf hybrid (10% wolf) and he had blue/green eyes..beautiful animal, wish I had a pic to post. I named my dog after Ray Nitchske, the hall of fame linebacker. :coffee:

I kind of thought your dog might be named after Ray. I grew up in Greenbay, I met Ray Nitchske many times at Packers signing events as a kid. He let me try on his Super Bowl ring when I was maybe 10 yrs old, I swear I could have slid it on my arm like a bracelet! Whooda thunk that 15yrs after that, i'd have a different tie to the Packers organization. But that's a diff story for a diff time and thread.

I have been researching wolf/malamute hybrids and I am thinking that that is the way to go. I have seen that the higher the wolf % is, the more docile the animal is and the more patience with it is needed. I'd have thunk it would be more agressive, but it's all in how the genes cross I guess. From what I have seen the best ratio is 25% or less wolf. This apparently is the right mix between companion/friend and security. when the % gets too high, the hybrids can actually be afraid of people and things. I don't necessarily need a guard dog, I mainly want a buddy/hairy little brother for my son. Plus a huge dog that is this intimidating on sight, really doesn't need to be much more aggressive. And wolf brains are 30% bigger than a dog's are, so the hybrids are far more intelligent, and I like that aspect as well.

Anyone know about wolf hybrids?

mojo, there is also a breed called "czechoslovakian shepherd" or "czechoslovakian wolfdog", which was formed by cross breeding of the german shepherds and wolves.

I have been emailing 2 wolf hybrid breeders the last couple of days and spoke with a crazy sumbitch yesterday from Florida that breeds wolves and german shepherds only.

If anyone has seen the movie "Talk Radio", this dude sounded exactly like the crazed homicidal fan from that flick.

He seems to know his shit though and has literally a couple thousand references. I verified 7 at random and they were all the best you could get. But still......looney as a damn toon.

be careful w/ hybrids though if you live in a populated area... just like pits, if it bites someone (which happens even with chihuahuas) you will be automatically labeled at fault b/c u have a "high risk" dog... there are also a lot of dog friendly places that publicly advertise (no hybrids allowed). Always gotten a laugh outta that one.

Poodles are mean ass dogs.

When I was a kid we had a brown poodle named Fudgie. We got him from the rescue center from some fucker who beat him. THe damn dog would guard his food to the point where you couldn't go in the kitchen when he was eating or anywhere near the food regardless of whether or not he was eating. When mom would set up the bath tub for one of us kids to take a bath, Fudgie woudl jump in and dare you to try to turn off the water. If there was a car w/ the door open, he'd jump in & you'd have to take him for a ride around the block before he'd come out. He also took on the neighbor's German Shepherd when I guess he assumed the dog was going after us. When my cat had her litter of kittens, guess who climbed into the cupboard where they were born & watched over them like "Dad"?

He regularly took on the mailman and had a big fat bulging blind eye to show for a hockey stick to the face followed by lots of bug spray from said mailman.

My dad would chase him into the garage sometimes & go in after him w/ a broom and almost always came out w/ bloody shins.

And all of this from a 30 lb poodle w/ painted nails & ribbons in his hair.

I had a friend with a husky, and another with a husky/wolf. Not a low maintenance dog. They've got alot of energy, and if you dont work them they will cause loads of trouble.
