does wine have carbs in it?

Alcohol is not a carb. It has its own caloric value around 7 (with carbs and proteins at 4 and fats at 9). The sugars used to make distilled spirits, like dextrose in beer, are converted by yeast from sugars to alcohol. Thus most distilled spirits (ie gin, vodka etc) have 0 carbs, but still have calories from alcohol. Wine does have some carbs however, as does most beer.

Good info. Point remains the same, its got calories that you have to count if your counting your intakes (don't know why you'd be drinking on a diet, but, besides the point)...

Alcohol cannot be used by the body as a source of energy directly. It is also not digested or broken down in the digestive track. It enters the body quickly and is distributed to all tissues. It can be used for energy only after it is converted to acetate and then to ketone bodies in the liver.

When alcohol is consumed, it passes from the stomach and intestines into the blood, a process referred to as absorption. Alcohol is then metabolized by enzymes, which are body chemicals that break down other chemicals. In the liver, an enzyme called alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) mediates the conversion of alcohol to acetaldehyde. Acetaldehyde is rapidly converted to acetate by other enzymes and is eventually converted to ketone bodies. These may be metabolized for energy or converted to fat for storage in the body

The bottom line is that alcohol does not contain and is not converted to carbs or sugar. It is, however, used for energy at the rate of 7 cal/gram and hence may stall a diet if consumed in excess.

yup -

Alcohol is 7 cals per gram... scarry. It is almost like fat.. no nutritional value though...

That was my point. It may not directly be clasified as a carb but its still empty cals.

Yeah but the alcohol has carbs. So you look at the label of a low carb beer and you see something like:

0 Protein grams
2 carb grams
0 fat grams

100 calories

Where did the other 23 grams that arn't listed come from? The alcohol. Are those carbs? I don't know, but, its not protein or fat so it might as well be....

The labeling is a scam IMO....

if you're concerned about extra calories stay away from all alcohol.

now... i'm not sure about this but i hear something about
"empty calories".

can anybody shed light on this?

Empty calories means calories without nutritional value. Sugars, alcohol, etc.
