Does anyone work 3rd shift, when do you lift?

I worked third shift for 3 years.....

I worked Midnight to 7am....just the way our schedule was set up....I would go home and not fool around....go straight to bed. I would get up around 200pm get a shower and go to the gym. I had huge amounts of time to workout, prepare meals, do whatever I wanted. But if you dont discipline yourself to go to bed...you'll piss away alot of your day....and you'll be tired. I would always walk into a workout fresh and ready.

It was so funny....the other guys would come in dragging....trying to workout after work....not sleeping enough. They were the ones who could barely make it through the night.

Third shift is ruff on you. But if your smart....get your rest first....it is perfect for working out.

I did it for three years....I watched guys come and go...very few had the energy that I did....

I have done shift work my entire working life life. I had always been on 2nd or 3rd shift. While on 2nd I had no choice but to train prior to work. But on 3rd, I had the option to do either before or after. I am 38 now and work days, but up til last year I found that the older I got, training after work was best for me. 15 years ago I would get off at 7, sleep about 6 hours, train, then take a nap before work...it worked very well for me and my body adjusted well. As I got older and started a family, I wanted to spend time with the kids and I was missing workouts. I had to start training right after work to make this all work. If you have worked graveyard, you know what I am talking about. You never seem to get fully rested and it is tough on the body. A very hard shift for a bodybuilder.

I already answered the training aspect of this post but I'd like to expand on Mechanic's post. Graveyard is tough on anyone but only a few can do it let alone train 5 days a week. The worst part about the shift is the weekend change over. You know what I'm talking about if you did the shift. You sleep during the day for 5 days then swap over to everyone elses sleep pattern then start all over again. How about being up for 24 hrs while "enjoying" family functions and having everyone there on your nerves.
