I'm not saying that you should not use a tanning bed prior to a show, but not year round and/or in excess. Been there done that with the melanoma thing probably as a result of too many years in a tanning bed.
Just be prudent. All the ladies I've worked with use Jan Tana products, only makeup on the face, blend the color with the final skin color.
Try using these products weeks in advance. See what works best for you (i.e., which product, how many applications, how does it hold up when you sweat, etc.). Don't wait for show day to find this stuff out and always go darker than you think you need to. The lighting on good stages are very bright.
