Unless you're really ripped, to the majority of women, a wider body looks bad. Just walking around in the grocery store (I'm off cycle and in good shape, but a bit thin), I saw a number of these blocky guys who were just bloated or fat enough to look dumpy. There is nothing particularly aesthetic about it.
My wife gives me more complements when I am skinnier- I think the majority of women tend to look at skinnier guys and wish their guy wasn't so blocky-looking. You just look better walking down the street.
Ergo, the "model look" will never go out of style, so if you choose not to go for that, you are entering into a realm where you please yourself and a smaller percentage of women. For that matter, getting too big can negatively impact you in your career, too. Skinny people do tend to fly under the radar more easily...
