Do you need post workout carbs?? A new video by Dylan Gemelli

Bro really enjoyed the video. Liked how you covered different training scenario goals. I think many athletes will find this video helpful and informative in their many quests. Me myself I totally agree with you, the idea of utilizing carbs post workout or even in conjunction with overall diets is the best approach in my opinion as well. Meaning It always depended on what i was doing as far as training and goals that determined how I utilize carbs. Really gotta have a sound knowledge of diet to be competitive and successful in this sport I believe. Thanks for being real with us Dylan which says a lot about your calibre, because I know all too well the road of trial and error you speak of and it's really not having a perfect layout that embarks the greatest discoveries!! Aloha

It depends upon my goals but I tend to have a lot of carbs around my workouts. At the highest I can have about 200g carbs intra training spread over about 90 mins training (in large volume of water). Carb choice can be just as important as the amount imo.

I'm pretty sure this video is aimed at people that don't use insulin.

I have been having issues with my comp and can't watch videos as it crashes so I haven't viewed it. I assumed the video would have spoken about the importance of carbs around training. Although everyone is different and no carbs around training can be great too. Why does slin have to come into it? I think large amounts of carbs are beneficial to many people (slin or no slin). Sure when using slin you need to be covered and carbs are essential but I recommend a decent amount to many naturals too.

Lots of factors come into play... mainly body type and metabolism. Some guys don't react well to carbs when training (feel sluggish etc.). But with the right types of carbs and the way they are consumed even those guys can use them to their advantage. Many have their drinks too concentrated (and/or drink it too fast) and that leads to digestive issues. Plus their timing (and food choice) of pre training meal could be off.

Even something like 15-40g fast acting protein (Peptopro, Hydrolysed whey protein etc) and 40-50g fast acting carbs (highly branched cyclic dextrins, vitargo, dextrose etc) intra or post training can be hugely beneficial. I am sure he mentioned they are important but I assume not large amounts going on your reply to STTM?

STTM said "If I don't have 100g of carbs post workout, I will die", which leads to an obvious inference of insulin use requiring the carbs, or potentially going hypo risking a fatal outcome.

anyone else obviously is not going to die of they don't have carbs post workout. As a matter of fact, I have extensive research and experience in the area of intermittent fasting, and I am fully aware at just how effective it can be when done properly. Carbs are very important, but I completely disagree about their timing around training. I did fasted training for 3 years, and did not have my post workout meal until about 4 hours after my workout (BCAAs only up until that point), and I had some of the best gains in muscle mass and losses of fat ever experienced during that time. I would consume 60% of my total daily carbs and protein in that fast breaking meal which initiated a huge anabolic response to the nutrients enabling them to be used very efficiently from having the huge spike in insulin levels during that time. It is my belief (also backed up by many studies) that once glycogen stores are depleted, they do not need replenished immediately. As long as you get the appropriate amounts of carbs in by the end of the day, it doesn't matter when you get them

I can understand 100% why you thought that about his post and you may likely be right. I just took it as an exaggeration/humour that without carbs post he won't be able to function. Regardless I partial agree with you. I think many overcomplicate timing etc and the most important factor is what you get in the day. A bit like guys who say carbs pre bed will make you fat which is nonsense. There is a lot more to it but generally your overall totals are most important. Then you have the likes of Lee Priest going to KFC post workout and showing how simple things can be if you have the right genetics/drugs in place. I know many guys who fast and I have done it myself. It's an eye opening experience and makes you look at catabolism posts differently.

Although I do think it is optimal for most to have carbs and protein around training. It all depends upon exact goals and carb choice is vital. We all have different opinions though and I see merit in most protocols. I agree with everything you state. I should add when I mentioned exact goals just as you listed you had great muscle building and fat loss. I think if fat loss a goal then fasted training can be incredible. In simple terms you are burning into your fat stores and not burning off calories you have just consumed through food. But right now I am all about muscle building and I think for the most muscle mass it is optimal to have carbs and protein around training and well at pretty much every other meal time.
