Do flaxseeds need to be crushed/milled?

yes, you can't digest the seeds

I have also used a coffee grinder

One important detail; crush/grind ONLY the amount for one serving and use it right away.

You get fiber and a dose or very slow carbs with flax meal. Some say there are negative effects of lignans.

I have eaten whole seeds and seen them in my stool....so I would say grind 'em in your coffee grinder.

Norr, why is it soo important to eat the grinded seeds so quicky??

I don't even have a coffee grinder, but I was going to use a friends and grind up the whole supply and store/use it later.

But according to Norr; not a good option.

This whole thing with the seeds is becoming a pain in the ass, but cheaper than oil. I wanted the benefit of good carbs and protien that I don't get from oil.

Or you can grind them all at once, then keep the powder in an air-tight container or plastic bag in the freezer.

I grind a few servings at a time and then place the extra contents in an airtight container in the fridge..seems to work fine..do I need to freeze if I'm using the milled flax in about a week?

ground flax seeds will get oxidised quickly (just like the oil gets rancid)
:(
