Dips and Westside

Can weighted dips be used as a triceps exercise for Westside training?? I've been doing a lot of reading and never see dips mentioned.

Yeah you can use them. WSB used to do weighted 1/4 dips a lot and it's shown in their bench video. I don't think they use them anymore though -- probably just because they've found stuff that works better for them.

A lot of guys won't do them because they open up your chest and because you get a lot of shoulder stress doing them.

Personally, they have no place in my routine. But some guys on here will swear by them. I think Natural-mike likes them a lot, and there are a few others.

If you're one of the people that can handle the shoulder and chest stress, and they're working out for you, then use them.

You can really ease shoulder stress by doing them Westside style, put a box of some sort under you so that its actually a quarter dip.

I'll usually do them for 2 weeks stupid heavy , then I'll lay off of them for about 2 or 3 weeks.

They work very well for me, but don't abuse them, and don't go down to low.

In my honest opinion though, 3 and 4 board close grip bench (raw - no shirt) has increased my tricep strength and even size (if you care about size which I dont) more than anything.

To each his own, but close grip board press is the holy grail for me. Nothing has increased my bench like these.

Peace,
Mike

I used to do dips ALL the time, and got tremendous results in size and strength. After switching to westside about 8 months ago, they haven't been touched since. I just started doing them as assistance work on Wednesday and think they will be a regular exercise once again. As far as depth goes, I go pretty deep, I have pretty flexible shoulders, and I like the stretch, I absolutely make sure the decent is VERY controlled. If however, I was experiencing ANY shoulder discomfort, I would switch to one of the many 1000's of tri exercises that don't irritate the shoulder.

Great point..

And a perfect example of how to tailor your routine based upon what works for you and what doesnt hurt.

If they hurt..drop them, there are so many tri movements to choose from. and depth is really based on your comfort zone.

I prefer not to go deep so that I do not recruit the chest too much. But its the controlled descent that counts.

Also some of the much bigger lifters may opt not to do dips.

Thanks for the replies. I was wondering because I love weighted dips, and I'm going to be starting training Westside in about a month. They dont seem to hurt my shoulders, and I can do a set of 8 with 35 lbs. I'm about 240 lbs.
