Diet on a budget

As you all know, eating right is essential to muscle growth and general strength. For us younger guys, the costs can be financially draining and even considered selfish when wives and children are in the mix. What are some affordable solutions to keeping on a solid diet?

Chicken, tuna, milk and eggs are all fairly cheap. Get your powders on sale and you can even make your own protein bars with some oats, nuts, peanut butter and anything else you want to put in them.

Well, depending on how big you are and what you're trying to do. You could also implement portion control. Because 90% of the people take in TOO much nutrition. So you don't lean out as fast or as effectively as you could. Try 25g of protein per meal instead of what people suggest of 40g. Take in tree nuts for snacks for their fat content. Buy cheap organic chia seeds. Lean ground turkey. Avoid carbs like pasta and rice. 1/4 serving of oatmeal, twice a day. 3lbs of chicken over 4 days. Hard boiled eggs for breakfast with some oatmeal. Snack on some tree nuts later. Lunch a nice salad with good protein. You will stay full (might have to adjust a bit though). And you will lose fat (might get weaker at first), but you will then get stronger. Learn portion control and your grocery bill will dwindle away. You don't need 400g of protein a day. Or 3500 calories of lean food to get stronger or ripped. Just the right combination of nutrition.

So is there any truth in that your body can only absorb so much protein in one sitting? I think I heard 20-30grams depending on the persons weight.

That is false on 20-30g a serving you could do double that. .. Also don't agree mossy take in too much nutrition like jacked and natural claims I'd believe exact opposite..ppl don't get gains wanted cause they don't get proper nutrition

No, I believe your body can take in more. But I do believe it's very dependent on the individual.

I'm not saying don't take more than 25g or so of protein because you can't absorb it. It's because you don't need it. If you're a giant, well then, yea, you probably do. But most people aren't Kai Greene or Phil Heath. You can get by with 25g of protein a meal. But like I said, it'll be geared towards leaning out and muscle development, not really strength building.

I'm trying to bulk and I can't always afford everything. Can I get away with primarily using protein bars and shakes and nuts to get my protein? Some days all I can buy is a fucking spicy mcchicken just to survive. I have to spend $20 a day for all the chicken and tuna and fish I need. I could easily do the bars and shakes though but I know meat protein is superior.

$20 a day? Cans of tuna are 79 or 99 cents tops, a couple pounds of chicken is a few bucks, fish is fairly cheap, $20 could last you several days worth of good protein. I can't see how bars would be any cheaper, and mcchicken?! Damn bro sounds like you're just too lazy to prepare meals.

I read through this a few times and I just couldn't find a clear answer to the question I asked. Damn bro... Looks like you're too lazy to follow instructions.

Anyways- here in Alaska chicken and tuna are nearly three times the price paid in the states. We have local brands for protein bars which saves me a lot of money. Thanks to all who answered with helpful information.

Tuna is just one of the option. There's tilapia too which is cheap (here in Jersey anyway). There's ground beef turkey, grilled chicken, kidney beans, canned salmon, etc... anything with a high protein/low saturated fats profile.

I've had a lot of people say canned chicken is really affordable- but it just sounds awful.

Canned chicken is fairly affordable and tastes pretty good. Unfortunately 99% of what's out there is loaded with sodium, so it's not really a good option.

I blow close to $100 everytime I go to whole foods.

but that is me.

and no protein shakes and bars won't get you very far. real food is so much better.

I would bet that you can have 500g of protein from bars and shakes and it will be inferior to eating 50g of protein a day from REAL FOOD. why? because the body doesn't recognize what the hell a shake is or a bar is. did our ancestors eat bars and shakes? or did they eat real food? think about it! good luck trying to out gun millions of years of evolution!

plus real food feels better ... bars and shakes are typically full of sugar and dairy which will bloat you and make you feel run down

I agree with you. It was a shot in the dark- and I knew what most would say. Obviously I won't be eating shakes and bars alone. I just wish they could substitue was my 2nd and 4th meal so I'm not eating $15 worth of extra chicken and tuna that my family doesn't benefit from.

Being from Alaska changes things, prices are insane there. Look for local products that have protein and are better priced, eggs, local meats and fish mostly. Do you have places where u can fish? Take the family for some outdoor fun AND catch some swimming protein :)

you have a family so unfortunately lifting and eating isn't going to come first for you. that is a decision you made.. I know a lot of guys I used to lift with everyday who had kids and then I see them maybe once a week. it is what it is

If you look at the ingredients list in lots of protein bars you will see that in quite a few of them the protein comes from things like gelatin, peanut flour, and soy flour. The first two are inferior to things like meat, eggs, and dairy and I try to limit my soy intake. These things are ok in a pinch but gram for gram I believe you get more out of real food. I do consider casein protein powder real food and other than possibly PWO casein protein is perfect for our needs.

Mentioning you lived in Alaska would have been something to share before your 10th post bc I would have told your ass to go out and catch your own food just like nangiggles said. Otherwise make your own protein bars like I do bc for one they're much cheaper, and two like maxxreps said there's a lot of garbage in otc bars so you could control ingredients and nutrition facts. Anyways this should be in the diet/nutrition forum definitely not AS, could a mod please move this bc I'm sick of looking at it haha thanks!

You are in Alaska? Canned salmon might be cheaper for you. Canned salmon is also always high quality wild salmon because farm raised will turn into mush in the high heat canning process from what I've heard. Try to go dried salmon too, indian candy, go to the fishermen themselves or find a good seller and buy a whole fish. Considering you like fish. I'm pretty health conscious and try to avoid tap water and i've also heard about plastics in canned goods being hazardous, but those would be the only issues with canned salmon. Definitely fattier than tuna but it's known for it's nutrition and is very clean from pollution or metals like mercury compared to tuna.

There are also beans which are high in protein for a vegetable, might want to try that, make sure to wash them. I'm not sure how the carbs would be for your diet, might be better than other carbs? They are very inexpensive and nutritous as well. I'd eat all organic if i could afford to avoid pesticide residue, but i always make sure to wash my vegetables thoroughly. I'm actually a vegetarian, though I cheat sometimes, so I know a lot about vegetables. I'm a pretty ecological and humane treatment conscious, animal lover/admirer person.
