An outdoor adventure race. I have total respect now for these crazy bastards that go out and do this crap for days on end. Mine was only a one day. I got recruited to do it by two other guys who know I run marathons and do triathlons and stuff like that.
Started out with a 1km sprint up a ski hill to the first checkpoint, then back down and into some cross country skiing for about 15km (9 miles) to four more checkpoints. My team decided to cut corners so a lot of it was trekking through woods carrying the skis up these massive freaking hills. Everything was a hill. Then we had to mountain bike 20km (12 miles) (all up and down again) and then trek back through the woods plotting our own course, which was about 10km (6 miles). We hit the two highest elevations in the area at a couple of the checkpoints.
And did I fail to mention this was all through snow? Not much, but enough to make things slippery, wet and brutally hard climbing up hills, especially on a bike. Our team was one of the top half and it took us 6 hours. At one point my quads cramped so bad I couldn't walk. I can barely move today. I feel very humbled.
Anyone else ever do this crap? I now think these people are crazy. I'll stick to my Ironman training.
