dicenzo's bench advice

Hey Irish, that's great. Looks like 600 will finally fall at your meet. I'm thinking that you are only doing one day a week of benching, right? Just boards then shirts, right? Sounds great.
Congrats! Which shirt are you using for these?

okie:

my approach has been rather eclectic. one week i'll do boards to warm up, the next week i'll do some speed work with bands to warm.

my main changes have been NOT to bench 2x per week, limit the band usage, and do reps in the shirt to learn the groove.

others: thanks for the congrats. lets hope it's not premature. i've been in this position before and gone to meets and screwed it up more times then i can count! at least this time, i know what it will take to touch the shirt, the shirt will hold, and i can press the weight. eliminating the element of surprise can go a long way.

Good work Irish,

I am not going to get real dramatic and drastically change what I have been doing as I have been getting unreal results for over a year now from what I have been doing, but I am going to throw in shirt/reps, metal militia style for a M.E. movement once or twice per month and I will be hitting more of the Mincher Method as I get closer to my next meet. More 2 and 3 board presses in a shirt to get used to locking out heavy weights in the shirt groove.

Good luck to all w/training.

B.

Awesome!!

What's the racket in the background? Is that someone doing reverse hypers or something?

Also, when you say you take more reps in the shirt to get used to it, does that mean real heavy? I have a meet coming up pretty soon and have a new, tighter shirt. How do I get work in it without going extremely heavy every time. Or should I just go up to how ever heavy I need to go to touch?

no one should change a damn thing

I feel almost guilty posting this stuff. Everyone has to find what works best for them.

Traditional Westside just introduced too much pressing in their routine for me. I love all of their concepts... speed, bands, max effort, but I also recognize how much shirts give you if trained properly.

I also have a gimpy side :)

DONT go changing anything if it is working people!

I haven't proven a damn thing either. My lift was done in a gym, not a meet. We will see.

Irish, I think you adding a critical element to your workout....that is practice with the shirt. I always felt this was a short-coming of Westside. Now, I think even more of the Westside guys are incorporating more shirt work.

Lets face it...you have to become one with the shirt. I made the mistake of using my denim shirt 2-3 or times before my last meet. This was the first time I had used open back denim. Result? I went to my meet and bombed. I blew 2 shirts. I didn't feel comfortable with them or their groove.

I will not make that mistake again.
