To me, raw knees and shins were just a part of deadlifting. I was originally taught to keep the bar as close to my body as possible to keep your center of gravity close, dargging 500lbs up and down your legs definitely lets you know you're alive.
Kinda funny story, a few years ago, a guy I trained with and myself were in the change room comparing injuries; I had just hit a 550 dead, and he had buried a 805lb squat. My shins were bleeding openly and he had burst a ton of blood vessels in his upper chest. A couple of teenagers walked into the changeroom, took one look at the 2 of us, and walked right back out.
It's all about being hardcore!!!
