I deadlifted 255 today and I felt like I had more in me, however I can only sqaut around 170. Is this normal? I'm sorta new so excuse the pathetic numbers :D

Bad form perhaps?

Well most beginners often train the back more so thatn the legs just because leg training sucks and back is partof the bodybuilding motif.. I know i only trained legs once every three weeks for about five years and have definilty seen major difference and proportion. I can dead around 585-600 and can only squat 485-500. Give it time and your legs will come around mine have taken a while but you just have to put as much importance on the legs as the upper body. Plus squating is a lot of mentality and is also a very complex movement.

Dead : 629
Squat: no freakin' idea...

deciever that was my first 3 lift. i did a 523 pull raw and a 507 squat raw. when i started powerlifting i had a 470 squat and pull raw. ( i think )

if i get a video of me squating would you guys be able to take a look and see what i'm doing wrong, if anything?

without laughing of course :)

Yeah...send it on...

Guys,

Body structure has a lot to do with this debate as well. PowerlifterJay is an exceptional bench presser, so it makes sense that his deadlift is much lower than his squat.

I am not nearly as strong as Jay, but I have similar proportions. I squat around 600, bench a little over 500, and only pull around 425 to 450.

I only compete in bench meets, and may not ever do full meets because of my terrible deadlift. Good powerlifters (Ed Coan, Garry Frank, Lamar Gant) are usually the best deadlifters. Good benchers rarely total well, because they are almost always sub-par deadlifters, even if they are exceptional squatters. Jay is a very very good squatter, and an even better bencher, but his pulling is going to hurt him in a full meet. He could subtotal 1400 and get beat by an outstanding deadlifter. I am much weaker than Jay on all lifts, so the good deadlifters would put me to so much shame I have just avoided the 3 lifts alltogether.

Many people who are built for deadlifting start off deadlifting more than they can squat. I envy those. The reason that squats eventually pass deadlift numbers is because equipment helps more in the squat than deadlift, and because an increase in body mass helps in the squat, but does not help, and can actually hurt your deadlift. You guys that can deadlift a lot are made for full meets, good luck to you.

good post b. Made some great points. I found myself not to be really built for an y of the 3 lifts.. im kinda evenly proportioned for all of them. My squat could stand to be greatly improved., my deadlift is pretty good, and my bench is pretty good

My deadlift is 615 plus. Have not tested beyond 615. However,
can probably pull more. My squat best is 505 without a squat
suit. Did this squat about four months back and stopped before
I ran out of gas. Could have done more. Also, this was more
or less a quad squat.

Have switched to WS. Will not test my squat again until I get
comfortable with the new squat style. I will probably get closer
to my DL with a suit and the WS style of squatting. :)

Pull 700lb and squat 715lb. The deadlift was always stronger but the squat is slowly but surely getting ahead as I gain experience.

Based on meet results, my squat has only once been within 55 pounds of my deadlift, but then I am pretty much built to pull.

My squat and dead were always about the same until I injured my shoulder. Now my squat number is unknown due to shoulder pain, and the fact that we haven't tested it in a long time. Most I've ever done is 315. My dead is getting close to 400. I imagine my dead would've out done my squat eventually anyway...I'm built to pull.

I have to max out on these lifts sometime soon but my best squat with belt back in FEB was 335lbs and best deadlift in march with belt was 425lbs. Then again I'm built for deadlifting and it was @176lb bodyweight.
