Deadlift Grip...

gymtime said:

275??? My God. That's awesome. You've been spending to much time with that Btrue character I see. :)

I started doing deads a couple months ago. My pride made me go too heavy to soon, and I paid for it with a sciatic nerve pinch or strain or whatever you call it. I'm just recently starting back, going real light this time. You'd think I was old enough to know better. Ah well, live and learn.

Thank you for asking NF. :D

You know...I feel as though I could never spend too much time with him. :) He helps motivate me, yes...but I was the one who wanted to put that much weight on the bar. LOL. I think my biggest accomplishment was a 390 partial deadlift. That was the first weekend in February and I had never done it before.

Yep....pride is not a good thing sometimes. I bet that was painful...and you are right for getting back into it slowly.

And....no problem. Let us know each time your lifts improve!!! :)

Hey...that's not bad...you will get there!

I deadlifted 275 for one about 4 weeks ago...hopefully I could do more now! :)

Thanks everyone for the replies...I think what everyone said makes sense...and believe me gymtime...I am all about simplicity. I sometimes feel it does make a difference, though...because I feel that if I turn my right hand around..well...I won't be as strong...but like Lord Suston said...I am sure I will get used to it.

Gymtime...what'd you do to your back?

I know what you mean about reversing the alternating grip. I feel the same way. The funny thing is, you're supposed to reverse your DOMINANT hand, though I do the opposite.

As far as evening out the shoulders, I'm going to try lots of chalk and the hook grip. If that fails I'm gonna buy some straps. I think all that grip reversing would confuse me more than anything.

Good job on 275 for one, my girl will get there someday :D

Hmmm

I have never heard that you were supposed to reverse your dominant hand. It's funny cause I always reverse my other one, too. I feel stronger, I think.

I think my next workout I am going to try to reverse my grip each time and see how that works. I hope that I don't forget to do that...lol.

Thanks for all the advice, everyone!

I just started doing deads a week and a half ago... Doing 225 until I get a better feel of it. I just started doing regula squats, too... after getting up to 680 for 8 last week for hack squats, I figured it was time to give it a try. At the end of my workout yesteday, I was able to squat 405 for 1 rep and will go for a set next leg day.

Hey there Nightfly,

I always pull with my left palm out right palm back to me. I have tried the hook grip, but I am not man enough to do it. Feels like i am going to pull off a thumbnail. I doubt that you are going to do any damage keeping your grip the same. I have not changed mine, ever, and other than the fact that my left side is so overdeveloped that I walk in circles, everything is fine.

You get that too? I hate it when that happens!

Another trick I am going to try is at my gym there are two kinds of bars, a relatively smooth kind and a slightly larger kind with sharper knurling. I'm going to try the second kind next week. Hopefull it will dig into my calluses better -- my girl is going to love THAT. :D

JC

Those sharper knurls can be easier to keep a hold of, but I switched bars to a sharper knurl, and it tore a callus off my partner's hand. Ouch! No pain, no gain.

B.

I did that same callus-tear thing doing partial deads - besides the pain its impossible to get a bandage to stick to your palm! I had to resort to taping my whole hand with athletic tape, football style.

I've used the same alternating grip, left palm forward, since I first learned to deadlift, and have not noticed any uneven development on my back, forarms, or anywhere else. I think in theory it does stress parts unevenly, but I don't think it does it enough to cause uneven growth.
As far as the callus thing, my hands hurt like hell the day after deadlifting, but that's the price you pay for 500+lbs for reps I guess.

Come contest day...you do WHATEVER it takes to get one more rep on the deadlift...whatever it takes. You are not training for lat development...you are training to get 10 reps with 250 on the deadlift girl!!!!!

Only 5 more reps to go!!!!
