Deadlift Grip...

Okay...this will just add to the numerous deadlift threads on here...but oh well.

My question is this...I noticed that someone commented on another thread that they do not like to use a reverse grip on the deadlifts. I was wondering what the advantages and the disadvantages were to using that particular type of grip. Personally, I like to use it because I feel that I am able to hold on to the bar easier...

I have actually been trying to work myself up to just using a clean grip in hopes of strengthening my grip.

That comment on the other thread said that they felt that it worked one lat more than the other. What do you all think about that? I am interested to know...

If you mean one up and one down then yes you do feel it in one lat more cause it raise the scapula and arm a little more which in turns stretches the lat some more on that side. That is why I switch grips every set. Finally got 300lbs for a full set with no wraps the other week, wohoo.... going for 365 for 12 next week...

Wow!!! Great job!!!

I see what you mean about switching grips...even switching them each set. I probably ought to do that. I have noticed a bit of a difference in my left lat ( a bit bigger) as compared with my right. I always grip the bar with my left palm facing forward. Do you think that if I switched my grip every other set that it would mess with my ability to lift the same amount of weight or would that just be psychological?

I don't know if its psychological or not, but I had a really hard time the first time I switched my grip. I've always had my left forward.

With regard to the first question, I couldn't dead without using a reverse grip. I always use chalk, and always use a reverse grip. I'm pretty sure I couldn't hold onto my heavier poundages without that grip. As long as you switch position of your reverse grip, I don't see any advantage to using a clean grip. Holding onto my max with a reverse works my forearms just fine:)

mostly you would feel a little uncomfortable cause you don't practice it but after a week or two it should even out. Try this palms facing down first set (warmup) this puts your lats in the most stretch position then alternate weak grip on the next set and the familiar grip on the heaviest lift. Overall your lat will even out in no time. Just make sure you feel comfortable and don't break form, many people arch their back cause they feel their grip is slipping, if this happens let the weight drop, and be safe rather thassn be injured cause you felt uncomfortable. Hope this helps.

I know this will sound simplistic, but I'd say do what is most comfortable for you. Deads are tough enough without having to worry about your grip. Ultimately, I don't think it makes a great deal of difference.

Hey...that's not bad...you will get there!

I deadlifted 275 for one about 4 weeks ago...hopefully I could do more now! :)

Thanks everyone for the replies...I think what everyone said makes sense...and believe me gymtime...I am all about simplicity. I sometimes feel it does make a difference, though...because I feel that if I turn my right hand around..well...I won't be as strong...but like Lord Suston said...I am sure I will get used to it.

Gymtime...what'd you do to your back?

275??? My God. That's awesome. You've been spending to much time with that Btrue character I see. :)

I started doing deads a couple months ago. My pride made me go too heavy to soon, and I paid for it with a sciatic nerve pinch or strain or whatever you call it. I'm just recently starting back, going real light this time. You'd think I was old enough to know better. Ah well, live and learn.

Thank you for asking NF. :D
