Dean Slammed Over Confederate Flag Comment

"I still want to be the candidate for guys with Confederate flags in their pickup trucks,"the former Vermont governor was quoted as saying in Saturday's Des Moines Register. "We can't beat George Bush unless we appeal to a broad cross-section of Democrats."

Dean said Saturday that he was intending to encourage the return of Southern voters who have abandoned the Democrats for decades but are disaffected with the Republicans.

i don't have anything against it. but everyone is coming down on this pres candidate for saying he wants to be the guy that people with confederate flags vote for.
and they use to fly the flag at the albama state capitol but quit flying it because they were accused of being racist.

Its a piece of our heritege that should be embraced, Slavery was used as a reason for the civil war to get everyone involved but it was actually about a large central gov't vs a smaller rebublican gov't that gave individual states their own governing power.

I'll whistle dixie and fly the confederate flag any day.

Kids I know in Northern Michigan fly the confederate flay, wtf? These kids are thousands of miles north of the mason dixon, yet they still support the rebel cause...bunch of dipshits.

Most people are not flying the confederate flag, they are actually flying the battle flag of the Army of northern Va, Robert Lee's Army, or the Navy Jack of the Confederate Navy.
This is the official Flag

IMO there is nothing wrong with flying either flag. As Hansel said the Civil war had little to do with Slavery, and more to do with States rights. Slavery was just one of the issues the south had a problem with. If the civil war were about slavery, would not Lincoln have freed the slaves in the north? The issue did not become a major factor until England was thinking about sending Naval support to the South. Old Abe knew the english government could not be seen to support a country that was fight to keep slaves. So, out came the emancipation proclamation.

does not matter BUSH IN 2004 The Clintons want Bush to win so that Hilary can run in 2008. Just like the movie with Chris Rock running for President. ( great movie forget name)

Head of State?

If Chris Rock is the star, I doubt it's great.

who controls the past, controls the future.

Who controls the present, controls the past.

The way I see it, a lot of people use it today to say "I'm a rebel" or anti establishment or a badass.

I have a small confederate battle flag in my room, along with a US flag and NC flag, in a display.

The article has a lot of guys (Clark and another) saying this is a terrible symbol of divisiveness that should never be used, etc etc. But everyday I hear people saying you should "celebrate diversity"

Oh wait, thats right. Its the liberal double standard again

NewsFlash...Just because you own or fly a Confederate Flag does not mean you support slavery, hate or racism, nor does it mean you are "on board" with the "Rebel Cause".

It could just be a symbol of rebellion (Rebel Flag), how can you criticize what someone else is thinking due to a flag they fly? You do not KNOW what it represents to them unless you ask them. or did you ASSume

The Confederate War was over different issues besides just slavery & hate. Most people do not know that slavery was not the biggest issue surrounding the Civil War.

To me the Rebel Flag represents History not Hate.

...

Only stupid revsionist morons think the Confederate flag is about slavery or that slavery is some "symbol" of the South. And only complete dumb fucking retards who cant think for themselves believe the civil war just about slavery (or even a deciding factor in its start).

The civil war was all about taking control back from ALL the states and putting it into the hands of a more centralized government... slavery was just some bullshit battle cry (er... like the "war on terror") used to gain support from the liberal whining bitches and people sitting on the fence.. slavery was on its way out and due to industrialization, owning slaves was becoming more expensive than using the available tools.

Does it even occur to ANY of you that over 400,000 Americans died during the civil war?

And as far as making the south "pay" for their supposed crimes.... ??

Prior to the civil war the average per capita income of a southerner was only 80% of a Northerner... AFTER the civil war that dropped to 40%... it took 100 YERAS for it to creep back up to 80% (~1965)... they paid dearly for over 100 yeras... whole states living in poverty for decades. The south was made an example of.

I dont think many of you realize hw much more control the people would have over he government if the civil war never happened... The American People lost the civil war..... no one won.

and as far as "Slavery " goes... FUCK YOU. There were upwards of 25 million slaves in Africa and that number has stayed pretty much the same. Slaves in America were treated like kings compared to the rest of the world ESPECIALLY at the hands of their black brothers.... it DOESNT make slavery right but dont go thinking that slaves were just treated all inhuman... after they were freed... many of them starved to death.

Slavery was illegal in Europe... so where do you think the South got the slave? From African slave traders?? Why is it no one is crucifying them? Why arent you crucifying them now?? They STILL practice MASS slavery... but you want to atack a VERY small percentage of slave owners who lived in the southern stated and have been dead for over 100 years???

Some of you have about as much ability to think for yourselves as a bag of hammers and you ONLY know as much history as you were taught by some fucking diversity brain washer in high school.

I just think it makes you look like a pure redneck, same with wearing camo as your ED attire.

Get over it.

...

Im not from the south... nor do I own anything "camo" (which I agree is strange to wear as regular clothing)

I just read things other than high school text books when I want a history lesson.

the orange vest is a very versatile part of southern fasion, they can use it for hunting so that drunken buddies dont mistake them for game, and then without even having to change go to work and lay down some cones.

Like 30 years from now I think it would be cool to own a General Lee from the hit show Dukes of Hazard. I believe it was like a 68 Dodge Charger...complete with Stars and Bars

You might be a Redneck if you own a Replica of the...
"General Lee"

^^FINALLY...a Dukes of Hazzard reference...

I posted the first line of the theme song way back early on in the thread, and I'm surprised someone didn't post the next line.

I have lived in Mississippi all my life and so I feel like I can speak with a fair amount of confidence on how the Confederate battle flag is used down here. And I hate to dissapoint anyone but it is a racsist symbol - and the meaning is pretty clear.

But I think what Dean meant by that statement is that he wanted to appeal to a certain demographic - namely lower/working class white males who usually are the staunchiest supporters of the flag.

Just some good 'ol boys,
