VA becomes the first state to apologize for slavery

Virginia apologizes for role in slavery

By LARRY O'DELL, Associated Press Writer
2 hours, 34 minutes ago

RICHMOND, Va. - Meeting on the grounds of the former Confederate Capitol, the Virginia General Assembly voted unanimously Saturday to express "profound regret" for the state's role in slavery.

Sponsors of the resolution say they know of no other state that has apologized for slavery, although Missouri lawmakers are considering such a measure. The resolution does not carry the weight of law but sends an important symbolic message, supporters said.

"This session will be remembered for a lot of things, but 20 years hence I suspect one of those things will be the fact that we came together and passed this resolution," said Delegate A. Donald McEachin, a Democrat who sponsored it in the House of Delegates.

The resolution passed the House 96-0 and cleared the 40-member Senate on a unanimous voice vote. It does not require Gov. Timothy M. Kaine's approval.

The measure also expressed regret for "the exploitation of Native Americans."

The resolution was introduced as Virginia begins its celebration of the 400th anniversary of Jamestown, where the first Africans arrived in 1619. Richmond, home to a popular boulevard lined with statues of Confederate heroes, later became another point of arrival for Africans and a slave-trade hub.

The resolution says government-sanctioned slavery "ranks as the most horrendous of all depredations of human rights and violations of our founding ideals in our nation's history, and the abolition of slavery was followed by systematic discrimination, enforced segregation, and other insidious institutions and practices toward Americans of African descent that were rooted in racism, racial bias, and racial misunderstanding."

In Virginia, black voter turnout was suppressed with a poll tax and literacy tests before those practices were struck down by federal courts, and state leaders responded to federally ordered school desegregation with a "Massive Resistance" movement in the 1950s and early '60s. Some communities created exclusive whites-only schools.

The apology is the latest in a series of strides Virginia has made in overcoming its segregationist past. Virginia was the first state to elect a black governor — L. Douglas Wilder in 1989 — and the Legislature took a step toward atoning for Massive Resistance in 2004 by creating a scholarship fund for blacks whose schools were shut down between 1954 and 1964.

Among those voting for the measure was Delegate Frank D. Hargrove, an 80-year-old Republican who infuriated black leaders last month by saying "black citizens should get over" slavery.

After enduring a barrage of criticism, Hargrove successfully co-sponsored a resolution calling on Virginia to celebrate "Juneteenth," a holiday commemorating the end of slavery in the United States.

which south african tribe came forth to apologize about enslaving them in the 1st place???

EXACTLY! I knew I liked you. Now jesse jackson and al sharpton (I'm not calling them reverends) can start pushing for reperations.

I read this and it made me ill. Not because I think slavery is right or should be condoned, but this is just political correctness at it's worst. This does nothing positive. All it does is appease a few crybabys that can't live life, but have to hold on to something that most likely they were too young to even of been affected by.

This appeasment for "minorities" is going to have backlash someday and it's not at all going to be pretty. Then we'll be worse off than we are now.

fuckin morons....

let me try...I am a descendant of the Romans...I'm very sorry to all the Christians out there since 1000 years ago my people would feed your people to the lions.

bro we're not that far removed from it.
1865 is easily connected to with a generation
i don't see why you are getting so pissy about an apology...it was a state supporting slavery...in the land of the free this is the true hyporcrisy.
an apology is the least the gov't can do, what's the fuggin big deal.

Well first off I'm not too in love with your tone and the year you gave was 142 years ago. How long is it going to take for blacks to get past it? It's over with, it was wrong but it keeps getting brought up over and over and over again. This apology is nothing but political correctness at it's worst and thats what really makes me sick. This apology does NOTHING but fuel the fire as oppossed to letting it die out.

for you and me it is long over
for those that it effected the effects def still linger.
you can't argue that whites got a jump start in america
the system was designed for us to succedd and for blacks to submit.
having not gone thru slavery, i don't think it's fair for us to say shit like
"just get over it"

142 yrs ago is not that far removed...my grandparents, still alive today, could have personally known ex slaves or civil war vets

here's the bottom line, black people as a whole will never be on equal footing with everyone else in this country until they stop looking for apologies and stop acting like the world owes them something because they're black. I think I'm the only one that realizes this....me and Bill Cosby.

The whole apology thing is a pointless, empty, meaningless politcal move.

Yeah, I get that comment a lot from some of the blacks I work with and know. "You just can't relate because you're white". I don't buy it and it's a cop out answer, especially coming from a 30 something year old. What it comes down too is that in todays America, you are what you make of yourself and there is NOT ONE REASON why slavery should even be discussed. It is history, literally. Why it keeps getting brought up is one reason, it's a crutch.

All a black person has to do is play the race card and no matter what was said or done, they "win". Without that card, they have to actually take some responsibility for their actions and we'll have none of that! The only people keeping them down is themselves and it's easier for them to just blame others as opposed to get off their feet, drop the excuses, accept life isn't fair sometimes no matter what your color is, and move on.

I want to again state that I'm not some racist klan member that thinks slavery is right or blacks are sub human. I joke around sometimes, but we are ALL created equally, some of us just stop there.

No way, I hate it up there. lol I don't have a problem with blacks, and I work with some that are idiots that play the race card, and I work with some that are very cool and don't use that crutch. Regardless of color, you have some that get it and some that don't.

You're wasting time, Doofus. You could've turned Japanese and gotten reparations for WWII internment a long ass time ago.

As a descendent of the Britons, I demand reparations for the centuries that your people enslaved mine.

got some british motherfuckers up in here? i'd like a formal ceremony, with attendant documents (signed, sealed, witnessed. in triplicate.), to serve as a proper apology for that infamously nefarious and hellishly unwieldly bureaucracy your ancestors left behind in my native land.

Not to mention reducing the complexity and intricacy of your native cuisine down to a single word "curry".

Both kept slaves as human chattel.

I'm not sure what point you're trying to make.

Slavery lasted how long? > It was abolished how long ago?

Segregation lasted how long? > Segregation stopped how long ago?

that ancient conquests of foreign peoples really has no relevance to n. american slavery...we are supposed to be the land of the free, the best country, that's what makes us different from the riff raff of history.
and that's what makes our history of slavery more disgusting...we are supposed to be above that.
since you witnessed first hand segregation, i would have thought you would have been more critical of it.
instead you bring up thousand year old roman slavery as a justification.

My only relative alive in this country during the time of slavery was a Full Cree Indian woman, my maternal great-great-great grandmother. The rest of my ancestor were still in Europe. My family has nothing to apologize to black Americans for and I ardently would defy reparations.

ever hear of indentured servitude?? it's where the people coming to the "new world" who couldn't afford to pay for it would trade 12 yrs of their life for passage...

slavery?? and the point is we didn't send armies to africa to hunt down and imprison people.. crew of 24 would show up, and buy men, women and children from black tribesmen that had already slaughtered another tribe (brothers as it were) and sold the survivors.. and we didn't create the market, it was in existence long before we came along..

you know the damn yankees in the north needed their cotton..

you ride snowmobiles?
any minnesotan worth his stones should have a sled

america was supposed to be above such things, regardless of easy or accepted it was globally.
we're supposed to be better, nation of the free, etc
that's why it's such a black eye on our tradition
and therefore i don't think a apology is that un-warranted
reparations yes, but an apology?
