how do i read or convert .dat files? when i open them now it just looks like a bunch of symbols and letters
 
.dat files (data) are meant to be called by a program, they aren't much use to be opened by another application
 
I agree, you could rename them temporarily to .mpg and see if PowerDVD or another Mpeg 2 player would read them. If you have the codec any media player will read mpg-2.
 
.dat was also used for video-CD files. The .dat extension basically stands for .data. It can be anything the programmer wants it to be.

Try to drag it into a movie player in case it's a movie file. Renaming it to .mpg might help if it is. Like I mentioned, though, depending on where you've found it, it could be pretty much anything.
