College

Ok so this has been bugging me since Ive gotten to college

It seems that more and more of my friends who are freshman in college, as I am, are gaining more and more weight, succumbing to the vaunted "freshman-15." Now I know that this can easily be avoided through a healthy lifestyle and healthy eating habits, both of which Im trying hard to keep up, however it extremely angers me to see no action taken on behalf of the college to help their students out food wise. I swear its a catch-22. If you dont go you dont eat, but if you do go you have to choose between pizza, burgers, pancakes, fries, etc etc. The only healthy things they have in the whole dining hall are salad, fruit, chicken (when they choose not to fry it) and tuna (which is loaded with mayo).
I go to James Madison University, and we have the 11th rated dining services in the country. Yet Im fed up with this. You wonder why people gain weight when you only provide them with shit to eat. I guess im kinda curious if anyone my age feels this way, or any of you old geezers ;) who have graduated had the same feelings when you attended college...

I lived on campus for a year and a half and bought 90% of my own food to keep in my room. I learned that my relationship with the dining hall wouldn't work out when I saw the plastic bottles of oil that they squirted on to EVERYTHING. There wasn't a single thing that they cooked that wasn't doused with a hefty amount of this mystery cooking oil.

I went to a very liberal college, so their idea of "healthy" was "vegetarian/vegan". As long as they could get their veggie burgers cooked on a skillet separate from the meat, they were happy. The funny thing is, the few people that I was close friends with that were vegan were very fat! The diet consisted of mostly french fries and fried rice with tofu... but damnit, don't eat those Skittles because there's an ingredient in it that they derived from a horse! :xeye:

Yep, the healthiest thing at my college was the salad bar, they had tuna, but luckily for me my lifestyle compensated for the crap food. I got a small refrigerator and kept my own healthy food.

yeah my friend is a vegetarian, and hes gained the most weight out of anybody I know. He eats a steady diet of pizza, grilled cheese, french fries, etc etc. Its unbelievable. I actually work at the dining services at one of the dining halls, so I get an up close look at how the stuff is made, its absolutely disgusting. Im slowly buying more and more and eating it on my own.
I think my roomate thinks im crazy/obsessed with lifting. He see's me making everything in my room, and making protein shakes, its hilarious.

Totally agree. Im also attending college now. Of my 2 and a half years bein here, i only went to the dining hall my first year (not knowing any better) Once I stopped goin and started buyin my own stuff, i noticed a helluva difference in my overall energy level (probably cause i was cutting out a tremendous amount of fats). What sucked was, along with living on campus, the school makes u pay at least for the "base meal plan" which ends up being a real rip-off if u have no intension of using it. I decided to live off campus this year, so am saving a lot in that department.

I don't live on campus but I hear where your coming from. I am in the phys ed. faculty (so the students and...admin????? should maybe have a clue) but our "cafeteria" consists of donuts, cinnamon buns, mayo sandwiches with "meat" and chips and pop. I'm lucky that I can eat at home and bring my lunch but it's bull what they make availible. I think we should start lobbying our schools to provide better options on campus. As a group, I'm sure we could make a difference!

What do we want?? Healthy food!
When do we want it? Now!

I feel your pain bro. Lucky enough for me I live in an off-campus apartment at Uconn so I have the luxury to cook and buy my own food. You should see if your school has any sandwich/wrap shops that count as meal points. You should also have access to a lunch and dinner menu as well so you can plan meals in advance.

Man college is where I grew out of control............We used to SLAM food at the cafeteria, many times a day............I went from 190 benching 185 to 255 and close to 400lbs in my first 3 years years.............didnt get too chubby either...........Not nearly as lean as I am now, but many say I looked better.........

lol well i get two meals a day there so I cant exactly do much with that, although i would be willing to be a lot of that strength came from being at a higher age to. I notice my strength going up also, but i still have 3.5 more years here so we will see how long that lasts =-). As for a sandwich/sub shop, they got rid of it last year =-/. The only food stores we have are chick fil a, sbarro, and einstein bagels. What selection huh ;)

Im kinda curious. Im starting to notice that girls tend to gain the freshman 15 a lot more than guys. All my friends that are girls have said that they have gained like atleast 10 pounds since being here. Any of you have the same experience?

i just graduated from college and my first couple years i put on a ton of body fat because of all the junk i was forced to eat. i figured id start cooking myself to make it healthier and cheaper. thats when i found ramen noodles. and that, is when my bf% increased the most. never eat ramen no matter how great they are for your budget!!! anyways, james madison is a great school, my buddy justin rascati transferred there from the university of louisville and won the starting QB job.

ps-dont eat ramen.
