CKD and ketone monitoring

looking to lean

New member
Ive started a CKD and purchased some ketostix to monitor the level of ketones in my urine.

my question is what level am I looking to be at on this diet?

depends. everyone will react differently. keep a log of your daily progress. change things up here and there and see if you get into deeper ketosis.

just be sure you are IN ketosis, that is the only function of the 'level' on the stix. If you are 'pink' or 'aubergine' it matters not in relation to the diet. The darker color only denotes a greater level of ketones in your blood, which may very well be due to the fact that not only are you in ketosis but you might just have overeaten like a hog.

Just get in ketosis and stay there. as long as the stix register that you are Ketonic: bingo, you rule, others drool.

awesome reply. thanx alot.

now as for the 20g carb rule... Im a 285lb guy. aprox 20-25% bf with lots of muscle mass. if I go over the 20g carb rule, will this stop my decent into ketosis? Im not talking about 200g or anything, but 3g here and 4g there can add up quick with a 20g limit and 6 or 7 meals to eat.

almost forgot... I train with high intensity for 1 hour, 5 days a week in the gym. and HIIT on my eliptical for 30-40mins, 3-5x a week at home... I must need some extra cals in there somewhere.....?

Carbs: NO carbs, not 20g, but as close to ZERO as you can while dropping into ketosis! once that strip changes color, THEN you can up your carbs up to 50 for some folks, 30-35 is the max for most, just be sure to frequently use your strips until you get a handle on what works best for you in terms of total carb/day... and yes,3 here and 4 there will ruin this game in short order: THAT is one reason this game is so hard to play. :)

You do WAYYYYY to much cardio!!! Find out what you have coming in, what you are spending and adjust accordingly: more is NOT better.

As far as calories? on a CKD? brother, three fried eggs, a half cup of almonds and two tbs of olive oil added to your day is a 1000 extra calories... actually, 997 calories, so finding the EXTRA calories on a Ketonic diet is usually NOT much of a problem...

Ghede, what has been your experience while on CKD? I'm normally against it, since my thing works without it, but I find myself in a bit of a rush right now and was thinking if giving it a try for some 6-8 weeks might not be a bad idea, if anything to be able to say "been there, done that"

I had great success on BodyOpus and really good results on Mr. X's FatFast... i did a modified version of Mauro's diet with serious results too.

For me the key was to not stress out too much about the whole anabolic end of the refeed and just concentrate on using the process to burn as much fat as possible in the shortest time and not over-science the refeed day.

I did one day of carbs a week for most of it, but had that down to one day every two weeks, EOSaturday, in the beginning to really crank off the fat, and it worked great. Its just really anti social. But so what? So am I! ;)

The last time around i had some tools added to the arsenal that helped A LOT! The most important one for me, by FAR, was Glucorell-R: after my last carb meal, i would take one Glucorell every hour for 4-5 hours, the last one being as i was getting into bed. The next morning, on an empty tank, i would do a monster modified Leg/Back workout to crush out as much Muscle Glycogen as possible, and then Savage High % Cardio either directly after or later that afternoon, depending on schedule. That first day out: ZERO carb cals and 60% plus cals from fat. As my body got better at it, i could be in Ketosis by nightfall of the first day, about 24 hours from carbs to ketosis rather than 48 or more for most folks. Hey, the longer i am in ketosis, the better.

I was also doing spinning classes five days a week durring that phase: holy shit did the acetones make my breath dangerous. Literally. Flamable. Keep some breath mints handy, you will need them. It works, and it works well, its just not all that fun nor all that pleasant, but for a six week stint? I say go for it, i will try and dig up my recipes from then if i can find them, if you like....

Ghede is right. You need to be at close to zero carbs as possible. I've found that once your body gets used to dropping into ketosis I can get in ketosis in about 12 hours without using slin. All my clients can do the same. The only carbs I consume on the ckd are from lettuce and that's all fiber.

well all that being said (and thanx very much guys. you are all a wealth of knowledge and info).

I made it into ketosis this morning... my keto stix finally got off the beige and went pink.

still refining the diet to something I can stand to eat everyday.... but this was the break down

Cals 2840
========
Fat 164g
Carb 79g
Protein 249g

I know the carbs are too high and the fats too low, but regardless I hit ketosis. 50g of carbs were from the 2 kiwis and mango juice I had after my workout. I was feeling so drained.... obviously my body was doing the switch to ketones.

Today I will eat far more fat and less carbs. You think Im doing too much cardio? I have $3700 Precor 5.33 eliptical.. believe me... Im using it as much as possible.

285lbs x12 = 3420BMR +550cals workout +550cals cardio (sometimes 300cals walking the disc golf course of 3kms)

4820cals today burnt in a day... yikes... thats alot of cals. I guess I should recalculate my weight every week or so?

good job. ckd's are tough to stick with. as for the weight recalculation every week, i've been told to do that every 2 weeks as to not drop the calories too quick. but wait for ghede to answer for the better info.

now that Im in Ketosis, Ive found that Im being very snappy/short in silly situations. Im not at all like that normally. I rarely get mad about anything. I suppose this is normal when changing diets and cutting carbs....?

I dropped something on the floor I yelled 'fuck!' real loud... not like me at all.
