that pic is not too shocking. Ive seen people do (and have done) reversing the thumb grip durring crusie week just to change up a little.
 
I'm a moron too, no thumb for me and no problems after 13 years. of course, it only takes one time but my theory is that if I "lose" a big bench (big to me) that thumb or no thumb - I'm gonna feel it if my spotter doesn't bail me out.

I bench both ways...
I find using no thumb is A LOT less stress on your wrist as the weight sits closer to the base of your hand and doesnt pull your hand backwords... However i can push more weight with my thumbs wrapped around teh bar....
I guess Im a moron too occasionally!
