Career Change

Any of you guys made a complete and total career change?? Go back to school? Try something new?

I'm 20 years in, this year, to a career in the helping professions and I'm about helped out. I've moved areas within the same profession and I don't hate my job but the passion is gone. The problem is, being the sole breadwinner, finding a way to earn a living and do something new. Plus figuring out what that would be.

I'm thinking I'd love to work on cars!! What do you think...an all female, bikini top mechanic shop?? ;)

lol guess I set up myself up for that one.

Good one though ;)

I've been at whammy burger for 8 years 4 months and 2 days...no career change needed for me ,life just doesnt get any better than this !

Right out of college I worked in child welfare/social services for 12+ yrs then switched careers when i moved out of state. I've been doing behavioral health managed care in one capacity or another for 8 yrs now (that's mental health/insurance field for thise of you who aren't familiar). I didnt have to go back to school. My psychology degree was enough to get me into a new industry. What's your degree in?

Pretty much, yeah. I guess....Medical field into customer support and sales, and now looking into going to school for paralegal..Who knows!

Working on cars sounds interesting. Go for it!

however other male mechanics will resent you or crush on you
the wrecker driver will take pics of you to txt to everyone...uhm, and in your day to day customers will pretend youre not speaking to them and defer to any male in the room...even if hes the kid that sweeps the floor

don't work on cars

lol...ya...I probably won't do that but it was a thought. I've always wished I had more mechanical skills though.

Get one of those combustible engine model kits!

I put one together when I was like 17 and it seriously taught me the basics...then I learned all the computer crap later on as cars got more advanced
Most autos now are all completely diagnosed via scanner interface with the computer on the car

all the peripherals are largely the same as they were twenty years ago with a few electronic ad ons for higher end vehicles
I can tell to tire pressure sensors vex every garage there is tho..lol

I hear ya Cali, I have been with my company for 13 years...we are successful but my brother and I aren't really getting along lately...hes always so grumpy, due to his divorce...im getting really sick of it...we never talk anymore...he used to be my best friend now I barely know him...

I was thinking of doing some well site supervision stuff but im too scared to leave...I would actually have to work lol...im def not happy at my job right now but what do you do? I have a great lifestyle and get to travel all the time..im in a very tough spot.

Yes. 12 years in the jewelry biz (6 as owner). Then I discovered that I hate people. Then I became a FF and worked 1 out of 4 days. I got to stay home with my daughter from the time she was 3 months until she started pre k. Spent the last 11 years in IT making more money and not having to deal with humans.

Apparently it is my mistake. I apologized. I get a little annoyed when guys are throwing their women on aas and don't have a clue but I did have to eat some crow.

This ^^^^^ women aren't completely respected in mechanics or IT, I LOVE IT but I've had shut heads both live and on the phone because I'm a chick.

I had the chance a year ago to make the switch from human services to IT, I rejected working with the local community college (which this year evolved into a state college fuuuuck) in order to be a case manager... Fucking wrong desicion I tell you :(

My career has been similar only my education is in social work. I did child welfare for 14 yrs and then moved over to health care and spent a year floating around various units and landed in child psych. I do some clinical stuff, mainly crisis counseling for all the ER admissions and then the other half is spent mainly with d/c disposition, as so many families don't want the kids back. I could do a bit of professional development and go into private practice but I'm not feeling that anymore. Far better $$ though.

Your job sounds interesting and the work from home would be a huge perk. I don't think our systems are set up the same though. I think, perhaps, I'm at that mid life crisis and if I just go and buy myself a sports car, I'll be fine. ;)

You ladies paint a pretty bad picture for child welfare, I'm not surprised, I've been holding on to my sanity for the last year...

Just go super-cougar and find yourself an 18-year old boy toy.

The female version works wonders for us guys. Maybe it works for girls as well.

Just remember: A young companion is the ultimate fashion accessory.

Or a 27 yr old with the right letters behind his name

I need a golden ticket...someone send me one other than smurfs golden ticket

tyia

True, but that's more of a golden ticket than a boy toy.

A true boy-toy is looks-only -- we're talking StrongMo smarts.

Hmmm fashion accessory or golden ticket? Tough call!

Looks great but dumb as a brick...doesn't that get boring?

But Cali wants a career change to keep making decent $, having a boy toy is an expense, she actually has to keep herself up for him and his expenses, that being said she might actually have to do it the other way around, get a suggah daddy!

You're under 30??
Holy shit Chris is a year younger than me!?

Depends on what other areas they excel on... ;)

Dumb wouldn't be a long-term deal. If you get a smart one that is still a great accessory, then stick with them.

Plunkey isn't factoring in paying for another man's kid....He's paying for two...

More drunk blathering.

Does that alcohol taste good? It better, since you traded Mel for it.

Working on cars isn't too hard. Just trying to get some of the parts out on certain models is a real pita. I just switched careers about three years ago and am really glad I did.
