These are two kids who immigrated to Canada 8 yrs ago from Saudi Arabia and went back to visit.
I have mixed feelings over this story.

Dollard teen might be beheaded in wake of Saudi judge's ruling
18-year-old's brother is already facing death penalty

MAX HARROLD, The Gazette; Canwest News Service contributed to this report
Published: 7 hours ago

A West Island family's ordeal with Saudi Arabian justice has taken a turn for the worse after a Saudi judge's ruling this week that an 18-year-old Canadian may be beheaded for his role in a Syrian teen's death last year.

Sultan Kohail, 18, must be judged under the same terms as his older brother Mohamed, a Saudi court ruled Tuesday.

Mohamed, 23, has been sentenced to be beheaded for his role in a schoolyard brawl in Jiddah, Saudi Arabia, in January 2007 that left a 19-year-old man dead. Mohamed has been in prison for 18 months.

Sultan remains free and is living with his family in Jiddah, his uncle Abdul Rauf said yesterday in a phone interview from Jiddah. Sultan is depressed and is spending a lot of time at home, Rauf said.

"It's something hard for him," Rauf said. In April, a youth court had sentenced Sultan to 200 lashes and one year in prison. Now, that sentence has been thrown out and the matter referred back to an adult court.

The boys' father, Ali Kohail, also in Jiddah, said the family is hanging their hopes on yet another appeal to a higher court.

"We could hear something in 15 days," the weary-sounding Kohail said. "We are working very hard with our lawyer, but I don't know what will happen."

The Kohail family lived in Dollard des Ormeaux after immigrating to Canada in 2000. They are Canadian citizens and returned to Saudi Arabia to visit relatives in late 2006.

Dan McTeague, an MP from Ontario who is the Liberal Party's critic for consular services, said in a statement that the Kohails do not deserve such fates.

"The two innocent Canadians were set upon by a gang of 15 youths, some of whom were armed with knives and sticks," McTeague said. "Sultan and Mohamed were running for their lives from their attackers. They did not plan or initiate the murder of anyone. Transferring Sultan Kohail's case to an adult court is very troubling, given the possibility of him receiving the death penalty."

Mahmoud Al-Ken, a Kohail family friend and spokesperson who lives in Montreal, said the Canadian government has done little to help the brothers.

"We need ministerial-level talks," Al-Ken said in a phone interview from Hims, Syria, where he is vacationing.

As long as the Canadian government doesn't take this as seriously as the Brenda Martin case, no serious progress will be made, Al-Ken said.

Martin, 51, a Canadian imprisoned in Mexico for two years who was convicted of the equivalent of money laundering, was brought back to Canada in May after meetings between Canadian and Mexican officials.

Al-Ken said the Saudi court's next decision on the Kohail brothers' cases might take three or four weeks, or longer.

They could confirm the death penalty for Mohamed - and hand the same fate to Sultan - or they could hold another trial, he said.

The Kohails have maintained their innocence and asked for another trial that would review more of the evidence, including a cellphone video of the brawl.

In a statement emailed to The Gazette, Shaun Tinkler, a spokesperson for the Foreign Affairs Department, said: "Canada will pursue all avenues to assist Mr. Kohail. We urge Saudi authorities to overturn the death sentence. We are deeply disappointed at the verdict handed down by Saudi authorities."

Wow, if it is true that they were just defending themselves against an attack, then the Canadian government should step up to the plate for these boys and make sure that they are not executed or even given the lashes.

That is where I have mixed feelings, they went to a country that knows the laws are barberic.
Why should the government always help people who visit countries where there are sick laws and tons of crime.

They went to visit family it says. I don't think people should be forced to stay in their home countries all their lives, even if they just went to sight see. I just think it is the right thing to do. Think if that was your little brother or your son who was going to be beheaded because he visited America and was jumped by some thugs and killed one of them (not that we behead people or anything...lol).

We are all accountable for our own actions. Although I disagree with the level of punishment in this case, they should have known better to head back..

Well if my little bro went to visit Camden NJ, I would be worried about his safety ;-)
But we are talking about barberic countries here.

Of course I feel so bad for these boys, but it should not be up the tax payers and the government to help get them out of the situation.

Should have stayed in civilised Canada. Now they're going to get their shit ruined for heading back :)

Camden is but one of the many festive towns that make our great state unique! If you're like me and only run outdoors when being chased, Camden is a runner's paradise. :D

I was there once for a music fest (on the water) and I had my brand new car at the time. My friends were like, lock your doors, close the windows and do not give eye contact to anyone on the street or we'll be carjacked!

:worried:

I was stunned. I would never feel that unsafe in my city.

There is a guy in town here that came here from Saudi Arabia. He was sentenced to death over there in absentia. (sp)

He was married to a woman and she died under mysterious circumstances. Then he left his second wife when she made some charges against him and fled here.

Dude is 26 years old and can never go home.

Islamic law is a bitch.
The sooner all Islamic governments are toppled the better off the world will be.
Liberal outcry in 3,2,1... "Oh they have the right to mutilate their citizens, it's part of their culture that we must respect"...

when are people going to realize these people are barbaric and ass backwards? my brother has been to all of these countries and says its scary how crazy the mentality is with these people.

Oh come on, are you trying to tell me is a recent Mexican immigratant went back to Mexico and was accused of a crime and was going to be killed, the US government would help them?

They would not even report it.

And I agree, visiting a muslim country is risky. My friend was born in Iraq came to Canada in 87 and never went back, nor will she.

We could use a few decapitations here in the states....starting with sex offenders, serial rapists, Charles Manson, and some wannabe gang bangers.

Canada's a hippie country. A kid could go to another country and kill 30 people - and Canadians would still defend him. No wonder their murderers get out after 3 years. Isn't that Homolka chick already out after killing 3 teenage girls?!

Yes, but she made a deal before they figured out she was a psyhco and was as involved.
Her hubby is in prison for life for the same murders.
And Carla lives close to me and when she moved here, she was followed by reporters to make her life hell. Now she lives free and clear. She also just had a baby.
SICK!
She's insane!

We're not anymore lientent on our criminals

lol, good to see you're still here grossly exagerating how soft Canada is on crime. A person convicted of first degree murder in Canada gets 25 years before parole eligibility. 2nd degree murder has no chance of parole for a minimum of 10 years.

Homolka served 12 years, not 3. Even that was reprehensible but the circumstances at the time forced law enforcement to offer her a deal.

oh, i forgot they were immigrants when i read that.

oh well, they knew how fucked up their country was to begin with and yet they chose to go back.

stupid is as stupid does.

the case doesn't make sense. If they really were set upon by 15 attackers, the muslims would be the last people to punish those kids. They are the "eye for an eye" people. Those kids must have "instigated" the attack on themselves somehow. Like if you go into a bar and start a fight with someone, even if multiple people jump you....you can't kill anybody, you started the shit in the first place.

Isn't Canada fighting to release a teenager who killed a us soldier in a foreign country?

Didn't a 3-time deported illegal murder someone in Toronto last year?

In the US - killing two girls will make you die in prison. In Canada, you'll have ppv, conjugal visits, fast food, board games and then be out in 12 years. Awesome!

Bottomline: If u wanna do crimes - do it Canada.

Look, its like this. What YOU consider to be balberic, they don't. It's their country, so be it. Born there, and you fuck up, you know the price. Don't act like these places are so bad. They have everything we have. Entertain wise I mean. So there laws are their laws, why should we care, we are over here?

Wow, so you are all about saving the lives of cats who piss everywhere and are useless as hell, but you don't care if children get beheaded after being attacked by thugs.

Priceless.

Gee, you don't think they might favor muslims over some canadian kids?

someone is looking for drama today
Not in the mood for your ridiculous comparision. Never did I say I didn't care about these two kids you jerk! Go find someone else to argue with today

I can't believe how crazy everyone on this site is. Truly, I'm beginning to firmly believe that the majority views on this site in no way reflect the reality of the world. God forbid. It would be a rotten place to live. You guys don't want to protect innocent kids from being barbarically murdered?

I think I should find a better place to hang out.

Actually Canada isn't doing shit for Omar Khadr.

And what part about the Crown being forced to offer Homolka a deal didn't you understand? Someone in Canada that kills two young girls is in prison for life just as her former husband is. She would have been too if certain evidence surfaced before they made a deal with her to testify against Bernardo.

You guys are sewn up pretty tight though. My brother has to pay $500 a year to the US government to gain access because he has a record for marijuana possession 15 years ago. Good to see you guys don't fuck around with those dangerous mofos that smoke the odd blunt.

I think I hit a nerve with you. It isn't a ridiculous comparison. You basically were all up in arms when I had a dillemma about keeping an animal in my home who was causing a health risk. Basically, if I had taken her to the pound, where there is a chance that she could have been killed via lethal injection, I would be a terrible person.

HOWEVER, you don't think anyone should intervene for these kids who are going to have their HEADS CUT OFF WITH A BIG KNIFE, all because they made the big mistake of killing a kid in self defense.

Sorry that it got you that worked up that I pointed out your opinions on these matters. If that isn't truly your feelings, then maybe you should elaborate on how you stand. It seems from the thread that you are saying that there is no need to intervene because they were stupid to go back to that country to visit their family (ever think that kids don't really have a choice whether or not to go on vacation with their family or not?). So, for their price of stupidity, beheading isn't too strong of a punishment.

Defend your views. Dropping bombs is a little immature don't you think? lol.

Sorry, as much as you love kitty kitties, I love children about 3000 times more.

LOL...priceless.

You think you can get back to the topic at hand?

and as far as drama, I debate opinions when I feel strongly about them. I rarely resort to red karma and name calling. Who's the drama queen here?

Back to the topic at hand, I like you and think you are a good gal in almost all respects, but I have noticed that you have this dislike of muslim people and feel that they are sort of taking over Canada. I think maybe your opinion on this is colored by the fact that these kids came to Canada from a Muslim country, perhaps. ??? I think you may have had a much different gut reaction had they been native Canadians, but I could be wrong. It's just a hunch.

no kidding

They have one chance left as they are appealing back to the top court. If that fails they will behead him. They also seem to be saying that his brother may now stand trial for the murder too and he may be up for beheading. That place is a bit messed up if you ask me.
