Can anyone recommend a good budget diet?

Funds are really tight right now, and I wanted to know if I can still eat decently healthy on a low budget.

Eat lots of tuna. Tuna is about $0.60 a can, and each can has 32.5g protien.

Egg whites are good too. 6 Egg whites and 2 slices of toast will give you maybe 30g protien.

I know tuna is cheap and good for you, but I detest the stuff. Thanks for the input.

Carb sources like potatoes, rice and pasta are relatively very cheap compared to protein. If you are looking for cheap protein but detest tuna, try purchasing Optimum Nutrition's 10lb bag of whey for $50, can't beat the price. For protein sources besides supplements try skim milk, and beans, which you can put in chili with some lean ground meat for an excellent meal.

Canned Tuna can contain a some mercury, so it's not in your best health interests to be packing that shit it. I'd say 2 cans of canned tuna, max, daily...
YUM

listen to Mustang...that is as cheap as you can get...tuna esspecially...It starts getting expencive when you start buying protein powders and other supps.
if you cannot afford this, get another job!:D j/k

tuna and bbq sauce

anyone ever tried this besides me? (its only 44 cents here) It helps to take away the fish flaovr and makes it sort of takste like pork bbq....Just a thought, i know it will add sugar and sodium, but if all your concerned about is money then it might not matter to you. You could also try some no sugar salad dressing....As you can tell, I get tired of the taste of tuna as well. Hope this helps anyone out who doesnt like tuna either.

Add to this the darkest heaviest damn bread that you can find for lots of vits and complex carbos. Also add sunflower oil to your shakes for extra cals if you are bulking ( i use flax oil but it costs way more. )

Mustang's right. tuna is the way to go, but if you just detest tuna you can try EAS Simply Protein. It's about $26 for 5 lbs if you order online.

I pay less than a buck for a can of tuna. Starkist, Bumble Bee etc..

now.. how the hell can you make the tuna taste good?

Yes tuna salad tastes great with Mayo etc.. but that is not good for a bodybuilder.

How can a bodybuilder make tuna taste good?? Any recipes?

ya, use some onions, celery, or other veggies in it...use tabasco sause to spice it up...I have used diet coke....yum...yum...my personal favorite...Mix it in low fat or fat free salad dressing...use your imagination...I have put it in mac and cheese, tuna helper, unless you are contest dieting I do not see the reason to cut carbs too low....you can also make blacken tuna steaks, by adding brad crumbs, onions to the tuna, patty it, fry it on stove top with pam cooking spray, and eat...

hmmm.. could you mix in bread crumbs and onions then put it on a grill? like say a foreman type grill? also has anyone ever bought tuna patties from the store? do they make this? or does it come in bigger cuts so that you could grill it. what about using the low fat mayo and relish with it? would that still be healthy enough to justify since it really doesn't add a lot of carbs?

Thats some really great recipes bro. Thanks a lot!!

I'm a college student so I'm forced to be on a budget and tuna and eggs are great for a bodybuiolding diet, they also are very easy on the wallet.

J-ro-
I used to detest tuna but now I brown it in a frying pan. It actually tastes a lot better. I'm not sure if I cook out any of the nutritional value, but I can stomach it now. My .02.

tuna options

try horse raddish from arby's or some tabasco sauce in it, also dollar general has canned Ham (lean) and canned chicken 97% fat free for a 1.00 a can, cant beat that, they are real good and lean with good protien and not alot of fat.

Try the better tuna

I know it's more expensive (3x the price), but the solid white tuna is much better than the chunk light. It's firmer and much less fishy. I still think it's a cheap meal.

To make it even better, I mix it with Stop & Shop brand all-natural medium salsa. It adds a nice, spicy flavor, moistens the chunks and pretty much kills any fishiness. On some whole-grain bread, it works out great.

Bumble Bee sells it in a 12oz can so you don't have to be opening small tins all day. I think I pay $2.49 ea. (USD) for them.

stick the tuna in a colinder and wash it, i ate to much tuna(hence the name) and became sick of it, i then started to wash it and have never looked back.

I don't have the time nor the desire to go through the newspaper clipping coupons, but I do usually skim through local grocery store flyers that come in the mail. Usually there is a sale on some particular meat that I like, and then I stock up. I can usually get ground beef for $.99/lb., leaner hamburger meats for $1.89/lb., chicken and turkey breasts for $1.99/lb., beef sirloin steaks for $2.50/lb., salmon steaks for $2.99/lb. along with other treats (I love crab legs). Because as with all expenses, the cost of groceries varies from one city/region to another, you will have to determine what would be considered good sale prices on meats for your area. And tuna's always cheap. To avoid the excess saturated fat and cholesterol, I like to use Light Miracle Whip rather than regular mayo in my tuna salad. Also, creamed tuna is good. That is tuna cooked in a pan on the stove with milk and oil (Canola oil is a good choice; has a lot of GOOD fats). I make meal replacement shakes with peanut butter or canola oil. And at proteinfactory.com, the various types of high quality protein powders I like to use sell for between just over $4/lb. to just over $8/lb. Definately a bargain in my opinion. And when you're grocery shopping, try the generic versions at least once. Sometimes the off brand (or store brand) is manufactured by a name brand and just given a different label. Even when that's not the case, I have found many grocery products in which the generic version is as good tasting as the name brand version.

Just my $.02. Hope I was of some help.

I drink 7 Myoplex shakes a day, I haven't chewed food in 5 months and the last time was only because it was my neices' Christening party and they had Stuffed shells and Sausage&Peppers (My favorite). I know it sounds crazy, and I miss the chewing sensation, but you gotta do it brother. That's my opinion.

tuna recipe

I eat my tuna with oriental noodles. Trow the tuna in after done boiling and let it sit to absorb the flavor from the noodles(which is good). When i eat it, all i taste is the noodles, so it is easy to go through a few cans in one day.

I think only 1 guy noticed that the author stated he hates tuna in an initial response about 4 posts from the very top. I hazard that tuna makes people unobservant.

Anyway - ground beef/turkey and eggs got me through college.
1) Throw either ground beef or turkey in a pan and season well.
2) Break up the chunks and cook until done while draining grease as it forms (if you can't afford the leaner stuff).
3) Crack a few eggs over it and mix together in pan with burner still on.

Tastes pretty damn good but I ate it for years and can hardly look at it now.

I really like the tuna. I usually cook it and well done and put peppers and some good seasoning on it.. YUM YUM tastes good. If you don't cook it, I can see why you don't like it.

I got a couple questions:

1) raw eggs? What about salmonella (sp?) I heard they have some new eggs now that they radiate and kill salmonella to avoid poisoning. I cant get those where I live, so what are the dangers?

2) I thought the yokes were bad for you. If you are trying to cut up, should you still eat yokes?

How much do you pay for a myoplex? What one are you using?

Myoplex - Lite, deluxe or plus.

Are you doing this to loose bodyfat? How much do you weigh?

answering the questions on raw eggs and yolks...

the raw egg and salmonella...impossible!!!!...if you wash the shell first...the egg is a sterile unit..if there is slamonella bac. it is on the shell...just wash the shell good..

the yolk....is 80 % monounsaturated fat(good fat that you need to cut up)..contains more protein then the whites..has cholesterol, a precursor to your bodies testosterone as well as other hormones and vitamins...if your throwing out the yolks...your uneducated on nutrition and should get updated..Im one of the most ripped people on this board and never threw 1 yolk away....you need to fat to loose fat...better is mono than saturated...DR.
