Building Muscle

My boyfriend is thinking of joining a gym soon but I have a question in relation to building muscle.

My boyfriend is 23 and very skinny. He is about 5ft 7 and weighs only about 118lbs. He is naturally like this because he eats whatever he likes and stays the same. What I want to know is, because he is skinny, will his muscle definition be better? What I mean is, most of you guys probably are on a high protein diet because this is good for showing off your muscle definition. Where my boyfriend is naturally thin, will the fact that he eats what he wants effect his definition? I mean he doesn't work out at all at the moment and has a little six pack.

Am I making sense?

Sounds like he has a fast metabolism - which is good for maintaining a low body fat percentage - but it will also make gaining muscle mass very difficult for him.

Having said that....it is hard to say how defined he will look once he is eating enough calories to add weight. I would guess that if he can add considerable lean mass, he will have good definition. For most people, adding significant muscle mass also involves adding some degree of body fat. Hope this helps you somewhat.

In short--no, not making sense, but thats ok. We all cant be gurus of the sport. LOL j/k... And no i wasnt talking about myself. Anyway, your b/f has a very fast metabolism, due to that crazy thing we call GENETICS. As much as some may envy him for, more dont, as it will be much more difficult for him to gain weight. And im talking yrs and yrs. But the good news is he will eventually gain weight through consistant diet/training, and TIME. It is impossible to say if he will have better muscle definition, b/c at that weight and the fact that he hasnt worked out, He has NO muscle now. I wouldnt worry about the definition aspect until he can attain muscle. What kills me in the gym is seeing all these guys who have no muscle and are doing definition type exercises. Makes no sense at all. My advice to you is to get your b/f to talk to a personal trainer or do extensive research. Its funny that your here asking ? and he's NOT.

well having a fast metabolism he would have to eat tons to pack on weight. make sure its not junk food either. he needs lots of good calories and a good workout regimine and he should start putting the weight on.

yes he will mostl likely be more difined looking.... yes yes.... eating the way he does..
he would probably keep the same amount of fat... and he will gain muscle...
.......I am sure he will grow the 1st few months.... but he will need to eat more
and odds are if he is working out hard... he will be more hungry...yes it is true..
but if he really want to get up to like 150lb or so he needs to really increase his eating
pay attention to what he is eating .... and eat alot 6 times a day....
......but at 118lbs the boy really needs some food..... at 5'7" he should be at least 140 poor guy....

yup fast motabolizm, your fucked! rite? i woudlnt think so.

i have a very high metabolizm. the key... EAT SMART! if he has the ability like myself to eat twice as much a regular person, he an eat alot more calories, and so on.

dont worry about the muscle deffinition,.. work on sizing up... its going to take time.
im still a pretty thin guy,.. but i have put size on,. rather then defined myself.

its going to taek him a LONG time,.. and HARD work with dedication... or else... like lots of others here will say... its pointless!

what about body type? endo, mezo ( that is me!) ecto- i think that's right. has been a long time since i trainned, three years since last comp. so i'm rusty ,gone back to trainning this week, thank god for muscle memory! just need to eat like the master say's cause being a mezomorthing we shape change with ease.....not quite........... your boy could possibly be the next lee priest.... he was a very small teen and was perscribed gh's....this is the only sport that you reach maturity ( peak ) in ya 30's even 40's,now that is close to home.... metabolisms can b switched on and of but not genetics you have a specific body type or a combo of both...
