BTN Push Presses

Yep that's them. I prefer doing them in front as opposed to BNP, but to each their own. Just stay light and try not to conk yourself on the back of the head/neck.

Cheers,
Scotsman

I love 'em!!!

I get to do them tomorrow :)

Agreed with Scotsman...careful... i did conk myself a few times on the decent, lol.

I don't like how the site had (Jerk) as the execution. Because it is not.

I do them as well.....I dont use nearly that amount of leg drive though

Been working on them...and man am I ever horrible!!!!

Where the hell have you been - I was hoping to hear from you earlier today - I missed my workout yesterday due to being sick and just pushed everything aside a day - catch up w/ me in my log if you have time please sir.

Did them - they aren't easy. I can tell they will help w/ shoulder flexability as I had a hard time getting back down to my back/traps w/ the bar each time.

What weight range are you using.

I also like doing ONE push press to get the bar elevated and then only dropping the bar to ear level and then pressing without the push

Military? That would not make it an Olympic Push Press then.

Yesterday was my first time and I got to 135x5. The pressing was pretty easy. The movement is very new so it will be a few weeks before i can throw any real weight up. I can see how you could press a shit load w/ this lift - putting the weight down is the hardest part.

We were talking about BTN presses and I stated that I also like, upon occasion, to start with a push press to get it off the traps on the 1st rep but then lower to ear level(still BTN) and focus on doing a pure press for the rest of the reps.

Not sure where Military Pressing was mentioned

you described a BTN military (strict pressing and you stated "and focus on doing a pure press for the rest of the reps" which is of a Military Press movement... taking out the leg drive that makes a Push Press a push press)... the thread is about Push Presses... that's all i was pointing out man.

No problem.

My confusion on your comment stemmed from the terminology - as most folks refer to Military Presses as being to the front only...at least in this area

http://www.exrx.net/WeightExercises/DeltoidAnterior/BBMilitaryPress.html

http://www.exrx.net/WeightExercises/DeltoidAnterior/BBBehindNeckPress.html

I hear ya... that's why I stated specifically what I was thinking... "BTN Military" :)

It's all good... Push Presses can be done from the front as well.

I'm looking forward to my workout tonight when I get to do the BTN PP's

OHH and AL... i'm 7 weeks in - doing Push Presses (only 7 workouts... once a week) for the first time... (BTN too) .... I'm just now getting very comfortable with them.... I've never done them before... i was a strict Military press lifter when my shoulders weren't bothering me before.

I HATE Military's....I get better results with heavy dumbells and BTN/BTN Pushes...my upper chest takes over when I press to the front

Definetly! I'm glad I found out the source of my shoulder problems... OH pressing feels perfect now... and I'm definetly a BTN person now too, MUCH better delt ROM (or "activation" rather), IMO.

How heavy are you going? I can see a lot of weight going up soon.......

Heavy is a very relative term... so, with that said, lol...

I think I started out the 5x5 doing military and subed it in quick, cuz i wanted to try them... and kept with my military weight so it's a bit lighter than my PP's should be at... but i'm not going to bump it up crazy, I'm adding 5 lbs every week... I don't see it stalling anytime soon.

Oh... uhhh... i think 145x5 was last week... nice and smooth, not tough at all... original plug in max...not sure... going back to check my log and edit with more info :) brb.

Musta gotten a max feel out session before i started that log then... Been doing BTN PP the whole time, lol... started with a "max" of 130x4 ... I definetly have the form down and know that I can handle some more quality weight OH.

I'd love to slap on some 25's with the big wheels and go for 185  but the Coaches would yell at me :verygood:

Hell i'm making progress, why rush it I guess...

I have a feeling you're going to love 'em once you find your groove, if you get it down right away... it's a great lift.

They felt weird in a couple places:

1. At the top - never held much weight up and "back" like that before - felt a tad uneasy on my last set. Just the thought if having it go behind me slowed me down.

2. At the end - putting it down is the hardest thing. I can certainly see the benefit to having rubber weights - I think this will be my main deterent from doing much weight to start w/.

I do mine in a squat rack - facing the pins and a mirror and I set the catches mid chest level......when I rack the last rep - I just walk it into the racking pins

ditto.... my gym has a ghetto rack i can't adjust pins so sometimes i'll bring the weight down in front and rack... others I'll just walk into the top non-adjustable pin.

Re: #1 ... it'll take time to get comfortable up there.

#2: a rack helps alot... other wise i'd power clean and military it up and back... and bring it to the front on the last rep.

Thanks SW and Sarge - I was in a rack but for some reason didn;t think to set the bar on the pins - I kept deloading on the saftey pins instead which I had set at knee level for some odd reason.

how's the grip with your guys? which finger do yall place on the ring, or maybe an ultra wide grip or narrower grip? pls state your height as the grip width would vary accordingly of course.. just wanted to see the difference..

i used to put my pinky or fourth finger on the rings and strict BTN press them till almost touching my traps and pressing it back up again... and maybe becuz i have a weak left shoulder, i'm recovering from a minor injury around the rotator cuff and delt area.. btw i'm standing at 6 feet..

I'm 5' 9", been using pinky on rings for a long time, but got a "almost pinched nerve" feeling from it tonight. Switched to middle finger on rings, OMG it felt much better on my shoulder. I'll give it a few weeks and let you know :-D.

Im 6'1" and I use index fingers on or just outside the rings...keep in mind that width dictates how much help(or not) you get from tris etc

Just a quick question, I have always done regular Push Presses and wanted to know why you all do the BTN push presses, or do you just switch back and forth.

Thanks

Never an excuse...

That was my squat rack in my garage for about 3 years.

That's AWESOME!!... i need to get a pick up and go to the dump and start making crazy ass weight set ups... oh I need to steal the good scale at the gym so i can weigh everything too, lol

:verygood:

Are those just plain old... old drums? Do they have a name ... the :nerd: needs to search and ask around, lol... cuz that's a cheap squat rack that I don't have and would be sweeeeet!

Yeah, just a 50 gallon steel drum. If you pick up some old car tires...it makes it much safer if you have to "bail" too.

Damn Clint. When's your next comp.?

Not really sure. Had the Cyprus Grand Prix here in May and the week after...I ended up with a pretty serious injury (stitches, glass, elbow...bad stuff).

Spent the Summer trying to rehab, went to Hungary and Slovakia for some training in August, and trying HARD to get to Germany in 3 weeks to train with Martin Muhr.

Also spent the last 6 weeks in and out of the hospital. All kinds of serious stomach issues, tests, meds, repeat...lol. I have the worst luck here.

Dang... Wish ya the best of health

Competition or after party? Lol

Hope you can get healed up and get on track. Drop by and let us know when your comp's come up.

Got 280 and 300 on these over the weekend, after squats and log press and while being sick.

Maybe it will motivate a few people...

Even more impressive than it normally would be since you squatted first....do you have a link to any more of your training pics?

My Sundays always begin with a squat then log press...followed by 3-5 other events.

I keep a lot of journals on my site www.clintdarden.com and I'll try to update those links (through September and October) tonight.
