Bring in the Evacuee's ....... Push out the Local's

This is EXACTLY what is happening as we speak.

FEMA is desperate for housing for the thousands of homeless evacuees that were displaced due to Katrina and Rita. There aren't many vacant Homes, apartments, lots etc.. therefore it has become a 'name your price game here'

Fine, you want to sell, then sell. I think its a crock of bullshit in some instances though.

There are Entire apartment complexes that are selling to Fema, the residence have an option to either buy the condo/duplex/apartment for an insane price or move. Fema is willing to pay in some instances 30-50k more per apartment than what they are worth.

I hadn't known about all of this until yesterday, I try to avoid the news as much as I can, makes me sick most of the time. Well My sister is staying in some apartmet/duplex type homes and has been there for quite some time. She was issued a notice yesterday given the option to buy these piece of shit homes.. for a price that is insane. Not worth even half of what they are selling each individual building to Fema for.

Most of the people that are living there basically can't afford to buy for one reason or another so they are forced out of their homes, LOCALS, forced to go and seek shelter so that we can move in evacuees.

Crock of shit if you ask me.

Aren't there laws against that? Profiteering or something?

I really don't know what can or can't be done. They are selling the entire place, priced duplex by duplex and giving them the option to buy. The price of all homes, material etc has gone up. What was one price before the disaster area is now near double the price now (realestate)

This is nothing new. It has nothing do to with Evacuees vs. Locals (this is how problems start). Real Estate is a business. Its about profit. I'm not saying its right. But it doesn't surprise me.

That has been going on all over the D.C. area for about 2 years. Apartment complexes are converting apartments to condos. Those that can afford the condos, buy. If you can't you have to move. My complex has converted at least 5 buildings and will likely add more. I'm going to the sales office and ask about it soon while the prices are still decent (its a great area; I don't want to move). My ex-boyfriend is being forced out of his apartment building and will have to move on Thursday further North out of the D.C. area. His entire building will be converted to condos and 1 bedrooms will sell for at least $275,000.

The sad event that a homeowner sells their place at crazy inflated prices only to turn around and discover that any comparable place they might now try and buy is at an even greater inflated price, leaving them with no choice but to uproot.. sucks.

I know its being done world wide.. My issue with it here is, unless new construction starts asap and gets alot of open apartments etc avaliable to the locals, the have no where to go either.

Its like fixiing one problem making another. There are no apartments avaliable which leads Fema to seek out owners that are willing to sell. In turn those that were housing there for years end up with no where to go.

Homes, property, apartments hell even hotel rooms are in such short supply right now... Everything is being bought up and its happening damn fast.

If you're an investor, this is the time to buy an apartment complex. They will be cheaper, as there is less demand for apartments (due to lower rates and cheap condos.)

As rates rise and condos become less affordable, people who own rental units will do very well, especially as all of these conversions decrease the supply of rentals.

That's some economics for you. That shit doesn't surprise me; FEMA was paying over $2000 per house to put blue tarps on houses.

Matt, you should jump in here now. I can point you to one small subdivions you can buy out and make a huge profit. LOL

Seriously though, its not illegal but its bullshit. I can understand wanting to make a profit, but by selling you are throwing locals on the street to house evacuees.

and by on the street, Im serious here, litterally on the street. There is no condo's rentals, apartments left.

How about Carnival's deal?

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2005/09/27/AR2005092701960_pf.html

To critics, the price is exorbitant. If the ships were at capacity, with 7,116 evacuees, for six months, the price per evacuee would total $1,275 a week, according to calculations by aides to Sen. Tom Coburn (R-Okla.). A seven-day western Caribbean cruise out of Galveston can be had for $599 a person -- and that would include entertainment and the cost of actually making the ship move.

I hear you, it is bullshit. I don't really LIKE the real estate business (other than construction) because it deals with people's lives and I prefer to sort of leave people alone.

The last thing I want to house is evacuees.

What town are you in? You can PM me if you prefer

yea its business and all but this is the govt doing this. this is not free enterprise. the govt is displacing people to house displaced people. its fucking rediculous and shouldnt be done. whats the point of it.

this is why i give nothing for disaster relief, not to any organization. because im already giving thru the govt.

Fema is buying out these apartments and I'm sure what ever else they can get their hands on.

I pm'd you ;)

This is where these people should exercise some restraint. Sure they can make a profit, but it would be far better to find another solution to the evacuees, than to further disrupt more people's lives.
