Brazilian Jiu Jitsu - Recovery

feeling tired or run down after Bjj is normal in the beginning. You develop stanima and start using less strength.

Women tend to learn the technique faster than men because sometimes we fall back to strength. All do the strength thing first. You will develop skill as time goes on.

as your training progresses you will recover better and better

try stretching after class, taking a hot shower or use some heating pads if need be or jump in a sauna whatever you can to help.

i find eating a huge meal at some point after training helps me feel better when i wake up

Yeah this is true. For now I suppose until I get used to it again (I wish I would've never taken time off now) I'll just go when I am recovered from the previous class. I'd like to get up to 3 times a week BJJ, and 1 or 2 Thai classes in between. We'll see. I will find the groove again! ;)

Heck yeah, I used to seriously grub hard about an hour and a half after BJJ classes. I don't get that w/ boxing really though, kinda odd.

you'll get used to it. I was sore for the first little while too. Your body is just not conditioned yet. Its like lifting wieghts, your sore in the beginning but after awhile your body adjusts and you can train more frequently.

Just a generic post to others who participate in BJJ. I find after grappling for an hour, I wake up the next morning and can't move. The typical ache that most guys I've talked to have; rib cage, obliques, back, shoulders. With this being said I find I have to take it easy the next day and that's a let down. I've wondered in the past whether its the fact that I'm a female and smaller that recovery sucks, but there are guys my size in that class as well.

Any thoughts?

being smaller I think should make recovery quicker actually
do you stretch after class?
is it like muscle ache or do you feel like you are bruized etc

I suppose the warmup probably isn't the best. Ten minutes of stretching, 2 sets of shrimps, 2 sets of back rolls. I also have a problem with staying relaxed and loose while grappling. I have yet to train myself that it is not my size that hinders me but my lack of technique. As for tapping out more quickly, then I feel like I've cheated myself. Does that make any sense at all? Lose lose situation right now. If I tap early - lose, if I can't train the next day - lose.

it's a submission class
it's not like you are tapping out to an untrained person
if you are grappling with people your size your size dosn't hinder you
if you are grappling people bigger then you your size does hinder you
the key is their size hinders them to you have to play your game not theirs
you don't lose anything by tapping out quickly
unless you are pretty sure you can work an escape

bjj is hard on your body, but the results.. the results! your grip will prolly improve bcause of the gillotine chokes, ankle locks, kimuras, gi chokes, grabs, etc. watch your ears though, they do tend to get mangled! and since youre a lady and all, i cant think of anything better for self defense. say if some guy, *knock on wood* tried to take you down, you can do a sweep, get mount and beat him to a pulp. good luck with your training.

grappling his godawful for a woman to defend herself with
first of all a woman would have difficulty holding mount on a man (unless he's really little or panics when struck)
and if he panics then she could defend herself just by yelling at him
also grappling has flaws for self defence in general because if you are outnumbered you are just asking to get your ass handed to you by grappling
I'd really rather not strike when outnumbered either best to avoid but I'd go with striking over grappling when outnumbered

i never said anything about being out numbered. so a guy takes you down to rape you, and hes onto of you. you do a sweep and haul ass. simple as that. there is no better way to protect yourself on the ground than grappling, and i dont think anyone rapes standing up.
