Bodybuilder collapses, dies
Sunday, July 23, 2006

A Rhode Island man who was planning to make a comeback in his favorite sport of bodybuilding collapsed and died while preparing for a local competition.

Anthony D'Arezzo, 44, of Johnston, R.I., was in Pittsburgh for the weekend's NPC Teen, Collegiate and Masters National Championships bodybuilding competition when he collapsed Friday afternoon in his hotel room at Sheraton Station Square.

An autopsy yesterday ruled that Mr. D'Arezzo died of cardiomyopathy, according to the Allegheny County medical examiner's office.

Mr. D'Arezzo had long battled heart disease, said friend Dave Palumbo.

According to a resume posted on Mr. D'Arezzo's Web site, he had not participated in a major bodybuilding event since 1997.

"He was trying a comeback," said Mr. Palumbo, who spoke with Mr. D'Arezzo earlier on Friday.

Mr. D'Arezzo was a fitness trainer in Providence, R.I. The competition was taking place at the Sheraton.

Number 1 killer of bodybuilders. My dr. said there's strong evidence that steroids causes pathological enlargement of the heart in some users.

More than likely his "friend" Palumbo was probably overseeing his diet and drug cycling. Palumbo is a person with a freaky system that can handle his "way" of doing things, which other's can.t

Dave was in the room with him when he collapsed.
Anthony won the New Englands in the 90's. He was a big guy. He had heart problems and recently had both hips replaced.

People are so stupid. I did 800 mg of test/ week one time and got diagnosed with Myopathy which reversed itself post cycle. It could absolutely happen on steroids. You accept the risks and get on with it.

What happened with the myopathy? What did you experience?

Wow. Personally, I think it's sheer body volume that kills bodybuilders. I bet you bottoms to dollars if you drop a lot of the size and don't go into the technically obese category, you'll be fine or at least at much lower risk of having problems different from a regular individual. Obese people don't live long, we all know that. Stay away from being obese and hopefully you won't stress the fuck out of your heart and die. I don't know.

It;s really sad though since it's not the same thing as gorging yourself on food IMO. It sucks that the effort you put into your body starts to work against you at some point when you surpass your limits of what it was meant to handle.

Don't ever forget that if you're over 200lbs and not 6'7" or some such shit (don't know the exact definition), you're techically obese.

Rest in peace good sir.

Went in for an Echo and my ejection fraction was down to 30%. Did not have any physical symptoms. It was a dangerous situation and could have caused sudden death and I only weigh 170lbs. Will never go that high on test or try to push my weight again.

Man, I grew up in Johnston - was this guy a big name? anyone know his story?

RIP. maing

Yea, I'm going to the wake on Thursday night. He was a friend for the last 14 years. I was directed to him when I was first getting in to the game, He was my personal trainer for a year, then friend after that. Anthony was a good guy. He was a good friend of Palumbo, I know he is not well liked, since the fake serostim thing, I got stuck with some of that myself. Anthony was a top national competitor back in the early 90's, and held some impressive power lifting records, I think he was still ranked 24th in the country, at 44 years old. A very close friend of Anthony's told me his doctor told him not to do the show because of his heart condition, This friend was also in the room when Anthony started hyperventilating, collapsed, and then stopped breathing.
Nice guy very sad. I'm going to my cardiologist Thurs afternoon. He used to like hemenway's restaurant in Providence, I ran into him there often, and we had dinner together many times. The funny thing is he always preached conservative dosages with AS and GH. He will be missed by all who knew him.

You couldn't tell anything when doing cardio?

What's your Ejection Fraction (EF)?
The proportion, or fraction, of blood pumped out of your heart with each beat is called the ejection fraction. A normal heart pumps out a little more than half the heart's volume of blood with each beat. A normal EF is 55 percent or higher. Your doctor can order simple, painless tests such as an echocardiogram that creates a moving picture of your heart using harmless soundwaves, or a nuclear medicine test that shows how well your heart is pumping. If your EF is abnormally low, you may need further tests to see if you have an abnormal heart rhythm.

Many people who have survived a heart attack can benefit from an implantable cardiac defibrillator (ICD), a pacemaker-like device that treats ventricular fibrillation (VF), the deadly heart rhythm that causes sudden cardiac death. Recently, several large clinical studies were conducted to see if ICDs could prevent sudden cardiac death in people whose heart muscle - and its pumping ability - is damaged by a heart attack. People in the studies had an ejection fraction (EF) of 40 or below. In these studies, survival rates were significantly greater for people with ICDs than for people who received traditional medical care.

Do you know your EF?
If you don't, ask your doctor. It could save your life.

Ventricular fibrillation (VF) is a deadly arrhythmia. In VF, the electrical signals that trigger the heartbeat become very fast and chaotic in the lower chambers of the heart. The heart no longer can pump blood to the brain or body. Without immediate emergency help, the heart cannot recover. Sudden cardiac death is a leading cause of death in the U.S. VF is the leading cause of sudden cardiac death.

I was diagnosed with cardiomyopathy 10 years ago because of a 52% EF. Had it tested later and it was 54% and the new dr. said he wasn't sure if it was a disease process or not. I feel fine. The first dr. blamed it on steroids and said to never take them again. Perhaps, I'm due for another test since I didn't listen because I did not believe that.

What's confusing is that you can have cardiomyopathy and be in good shape it appears. You would think a person that could run 2 miles relative fast compared to a person that can't even run around the block would have a healthier heart, but I guess that's not the case.

This is not a dis but do you really think his years of steroids wasn't a factor?? Ant was DIESEL since I was 18(i'm 34 now) thats a long time to be doing what he was doing. I mean the guy was 260+ all of the time..maybe even 275+...at 5'9",10"...thats HUGE and very taxing on the heart...there's a reaction for every action...trust me ..I LOVE AS...just do them correctly..as much as possible....

HE WAS UP TO 310BLS A FEW YEARS AGO AT 5'10 ,

You would think that as many people around the world including top athletes that were on the juice, if it truly was the juice, people would be dropping dead left and right. Im sure his genetics palyed a huge role in this whole thing.

Uh, techically obese boss. Go to the doctor and have a look at his bodyweight index thingie. Obese is defined by weight I believe, not bodyfat percentage. I'm not a damn doctor but you know what I mean either way. Jesus.

Don't think obesity distinguishes between fat and muscular. One could be all muscle and have poor arteries and an overtaxed heart.

I can't believe I'm going to lean towards Ffuck Ffactor's side but why not? Your heart has to work harder to pump blood through a greater volume. Do your veins grow when you gain size? Again, I'm no doctor but common sense would suggest to me that a greater body volume requires more pump power. I'm sur lipid profiles and the cholesterol of someone who is on steroids factors ina nd everything but I gotta say a huge man is a huge man.

you're a huge man.
ok, i've read that for every pound people gain their blood vessels have to pump 1 more mile of blood through new veins, but I always thought that was just for FAT. now you make me think do I really want to gain 20 pounds of muscle? hmm. thank you Dr. nathan. physics phenom.

I wouldn't have it any other way.

I'm sure this guy was taking heavy dosages for extended periods of time. Same exact thing happen to a friend of mine and he was on high dosages for long periods of time. Don't forget too that many bodybuilders who take high dosages also take lots of painkillers which is not very healthy either.

lol. Sorry dude. I'm just saying. Personally, I'm satisfied to be obese for the next ten years. Maybe compete in triathlons when I get older. Who knows?

And the above two gentlemen have both amde excellent points. A LOT of those guys use all sorts of unhealthy drugs for all sorts of reasons and do it in large amounts for a long ass time.

But more to the point dude died and whatever he was doing, the price was too high. He didn't deserve to die for it.

And by the chart I posted he isnt technically obese, he would need to be 225lbs to be technically obese.

seriously ....the human heart doesn't know(or care) that you're obese or JACKED...it still has to work hard to pump blood to that mass....we can help this by doing cardio and keeping LDL under control......as well as BP

Just a thought.....

This "chart" is not used that much anymore. Sure, Some Docs still use it for the regular pt. that does lite exercise. I work as a Firefighter/EMT-I and have been testing with some big departments here in Texas. These big departments require long (4-6 months) of testing for employment. I am 5 ft. 7 inch. and my weight was about 210 lbs. when I first started testing. They do EKG, full blood work, etc....etc.... and found me to be a healthy person with low risks. That is what is important. After doing both Triathlon training and in the last few year getting into BB, I can tell you that just at much lean lite people in endurance sports die from heart problems.

FFQuads said:

Yup I agree, the big thing is genetics, then lifestyle second.

My family has very good heart genes, nobody has had any type of heart problems on either side ( COD has been cancer and strokes - all at ages of 80+ ). All of my heart tests have always come back great, but I am not particuarly good at endurance type sports/athletics. My girlfriend is, she trains her ass off at cardio, but has to monitor her cholesterol and BP because of bad family history.

I think the people with bad family history and/or tests that come back not particuarly good need to take a longer look at how they train. It may not be good to carry around 250lbs+ of muscle in every case. But for most of us I think its fine.

my .02:
its probably due to genetics and the doses and duration of drugs he has been putting into his body.

A friend of mine just died at 38 years old. The doctors said his organs were like a 90 year olds. The guy had been on gh and steroids for about 15 years straight. Not smart. I still believe if used prudently steroids can be helpful but this guys death has kind of made me think about things a bit more to say the least.

I tend to agree. I can remember being the last one to leave the locker room from fatigue long before I took aas. I think several cases of strep throat may have slightly damaged my heart as a child so that aas usage might aggravate an already existing condition. For the most part though, I feel great and don't see how anything could be wrong. If I suddenly drop dead, sail-a-vee (sp) LOL

Although he was very young, it is still not uncommon at that age. To claim it had ANYTHING at all to do with aas is total bollocks! On the same day, no doubt some where else in the world, some one of the same age will have died of the same thing. This other guy could have been an amateur runner and ate nothing but lean meat, noodles and steamed veg. Would it then be fair to say his running was the cause of his heart failure?

I laugh at your posts because your blood pressure must be so elevated with the combination of your temper and your steroid use.

and I will always stick by this though, anyone else is stupid for risking their health with steroid use.

IF YOU ARE NOT A PROFESSIONAL ATHLETE/PROFESSIONAL BODYBUILDER/POWERLIFTER MAKING MONEY, YOU HAVE NO BUSINESS TAKING ROIDS. I UNDERSTAND PROFESSIONAL ATHLETES NEED STEROIDS TO COMPETE AT A CERTAIN LEVEL BECAUSE EVERYONE IS DOING THEM. BUT THEY ARE MAKING LOTS OF MONEY, THAT IS WHY THEY CAN RISK IT..... MOST OF YOU ARE PAYING LOTS OF MONEY FOR THE ROIDS AND NOT GETTING ANYTHING BACK FROM THEM (ESPECIALLY MONEY) YOUR JUST FEEDING YOUR OWN EGO WITH YOUR BLOATED MUSCLES IN YOUR TIGHT UNDER ARMOUR SHIRTS AT THE CLUBS TRYING TO PICK UP BITCHES !!!

THE MAJORITY OF YOU HAVE LOW SELF ESTEEM AND A MALE ADONIS COMPLEX !!!

"The Adonis Complex brilliantly demonstrates that body obsession is an equal-opportunity menace and that men who seek physical perfection are in an insidious double bind. The "male body image industry" (think Calvin Klein underwear ads) creates impossible ideals of beauty and body, yet men--unlike women--are prohibited from discussing how they think and feel about their bodies.

The image industry is displayed in fascinating detail--for example, photos of the new buff makeovers on GI Joe and Star Wars action figures. The book offers stunning evidence of men's silent suffering to achieve Adonis-like beauty: secret dietary rituals, hair transplants, penis enlargement, cosmetic surgery, and abuse of steroids, ephedrine, fat burners, and diuretics. Two clinical disorders, "body dysmorphia" and "bigorexia," a chilling inverse of anorexia, in which men continue to think they are tiny even when they are alarmingly muscled, are also introduced. The authors' prescriptions are as well targeted as their descriptions.

The final chapters offer compelling advice in vivid case studies, self-tests, and one of the author's own stories of recovering from an eating disorder. Parents of growing boys and men trapped in the mirror will find a clear, cognitive behavioral program that allows them to set more realistic goals for their bodies and minds"

I have and read this adonis complex book..its mostly crap...and most of the people here dont necessarily have low self esteem...but a bad self image is another story...there is a big difference between the two. Also...most here do NOT have a male adonis complex...looking for perfection..because if that WERE the case...we'd have mostly competitive bodybuilders here..which is not the case..more like 1 in every 6 individuals here...lots here just have a low self image (to an extent), and want to improve their body...and started from a young age, and have kept with it..thats all...and it's a GOOD thing because it's a healthy hobby for the most part...if you dont abusive drugs of course. And you dont necessarily make alot of money as a pro bb'er...that doesnt necessitate taking juice...most pros, for the most part, dont make squat...only a select few...so if ure taking juice to compete..its for the love of the sport and to make personal goals, not for $ like maverick claims..the amount of bullshit this fag throws around is ridiculous, and he isnt even a bodybuilder..so really shouldnt be giving advice AT ALL. Now if you think otherwise maverick, then you have problems. I believe its fine for competitive athletes to take steroids..bodybuilders in particular..or anyone wanting to strive for a competitive like body, but doesnt actually compete..but if ure 18, lifted for a year, dont eat well, etc..and want to take juice...well..its not for you.

I just dont think it is worth the risk if you dont have the opportunity to make lots of money with the advantages that roids give you.

I never claim to be a bodybuilder, but I will say one thing..... I am in great shape and I am pretty damn strong for my size.......

but I am most proud of the fact that I am healthy !!! not too mention a pretty good athlete.

THE MAJORITY OF YOU HAVE LOW SELF ESTEEM AND A MALE ADONIS COMPLEX !!!
you can use a sword to kill a man... or you can use it to stop a theif...
everything in this world is what you make of it... :chomp:
so in your world... ...a professional athlete making money has the right to use somthing to improve their overall quality of life... but other people... who have put this same substance into their body... dont share this right... even though they make money some other way (a job)... maintain a healthy family (not all of us go running around crazed trying to fuck everything we see)... may possibly make better choices with their AAS use because they're not trying to set a world record... have better eating habits and overall healthier approaches at their training...
but i guess since the pro gets paid for doing it its ok... that's not feeding into their ego's...
why can't we try to keep up... and be healthy about it? we dont have low self esteem... we just think great of ourselves... and we wouldn't train hard if he didn't beleive in ourselves...
you can be happy with being a worthless punk in life... thats fine with me...
you can have your inferiority... you can match up with the man who trains more intense... (because they can)... you match up with the man who has no fear in his eyes...
sorry but we want the best... i have an ego... damn right... and you would be a slave to your lack of ego :finger: :elephant:

Maverick,

m sure many do have the adons complex, however many, like myself took steroids to speed up the process. We are Americans, we like to get from point A to Point B as fast as we can....

We take whatever the heck we want, and do as we pleas!!

To the BB'er that passed away,. Peace be with the family, and I will see you on fiddlers green

The point is that we MUST accept that there could be side effects from steroids and we need to take that seriously.

Seriously, I want admin to take note of this. We are at a difficult time right now where steroids are getting a bad rap because of a handful a parents whose kids died allegedly due to steroids and ex-sports stars like canseco. Do we really want kids like this on this board with this kinda attitude. They can get ALL of us in trouble.

Don't be such a goodytwoshoe cry baby, PUSSY.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

For ONCE in your life, take off your pink dress and put on PANTS.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The majority of roid users on this board DON'T want candy asses like you & your sissy girlfriend Maverick trying to preach your stupid point of view garbage.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Those kids that you say died are a bunch of Abusers & addicts who give legitamate roid users like myself a bad name.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You & your pussy girlfriend Maverick are a part of that anti roid propaganda campaign, which means the 2 of you are SHIT. Just like the ignorant media & the "by the book" government.....................................

i have to agree with ffactor...that comment by mr snakes about roids and swearing and crap in regards to ffactor's justifiable comment should not be tolerated on this board.

also...mod's take note of mr snakes...these are the types of kids we dont want taking steroids...his immaturity speaks for itself..the more i read his posts the more annoyed I get at the ignorant kids on this board and their lack of respect.

hey ffactor..dont take this tard personally...you and I both know these wifebeater boys would never talk like this face to face with us...now i wonder why that is.. :coffee:

There are no kids on this board that i'm aware of ................................
