Blood Pressure Questions??

GatorHunter

New member
I recently found out that my blood pressure is kinda high and I am only 23. I am consulting a doctor and am planning on discussing my diet along with my supplements and was wondering if sense I have been diagnosed with HBP should I discontinue everything like protein shakes etc.... I would really like others opinions and maybe to hear from other people who are in the same position. Please feel free to ask me for more info and all suggestions are welcome! Thanks,

I was in same boat. I was 18 with HBP, but it was because I went from 171 pounds at 6% BF too 235lbs 16% BF in 3 months, growth spirt if you will. I am way below now and here is how.

It isn't protein that increase your blood pressure, it is sat fat. I cut out all red meat, all pork. Stick with chicken and fish only. Start taking in flaxseed oil (tablets) at the reccomended dosage. Lean up your diet from fats. Skim milk instead of 2%, fat free everything.

Start off walking/joggin slowly daily. It's like a cuttign diet basically, but eventually you get everythgin back to normal. Eat things HIGH in Monosatuated fat like Almonds (NO ROASTED OR SALTED). This will clean up your hdl/ldl levels.

Try not eatgin as much before bed too, seems to have helped me. I was at liek 150, now I am 110. I feel ten times better and I get ALOT less headaches.

Caffeine makes ur bp rise signifacntly!

Thanks man much k to you!! I have been cutting back alot on things like the salted stuff and the beef. But all my life I have only drank fat free milk. I was told most of the protein I was takeing in might have caused it cause I work at a skilled nurseing facility and I asked some RN/LPN and thats what they said. But for now I have cut out coffee and red meat. Any way please anyone feel free to comment etc... Thanks.

Protein doesn't affect blood pressure, and fats only affect blood pressure in the long-term by predisposing you to atherosclerosis. Without a history of early heart disease in your family, it's unlikely that atherosclerosis is contributing to your blood pressure problems.

How high was your blood pressure?

If it's extremely high (>160), then you need to be worked up for two conditions: renal artery stenosis (a narrowing of the artery leading to one of your kidneys) and pheochromocytoma (a benign [90% of the time] tumour of your adrenal glands).

Some people are extremely sensitive to caffeine and sodium. You should try cutting out both caffeine and as much sodium from your diet as possible. If you eat a lot of fried foods, fast foods, cafeteria meals, etc., then you may be consuming as much as 6 g of sodium daily. The recommended maximum amount is 2,400 mg (2.4 g). It is extremely difficult to stay within that range because so many of our processed foods are so high in sodium. Canned meats, canned vegetables, etc. are usually high in sodium. Frozen vegetables, or better yet, fresh vegetables are much better for you.

I would suggest seeing a physician about your blood pressure to determine if you need medications to control it. Uncontrolled hypertension can lead to increased risk of heart attack and stroke, increased risk of renal failure requiring dialysis, as well as increased risk of blindness. Your physician should order a urinalysis to check for protein in your urine, a chest x-ray to check for an enlarged heart, an EKG to check for any "strain" or enlargement of your left ventricle, as well as basic labs, such as your kidney function tests.

Not necessarily, there is a drug produced in the body called Adenosine that counters the effect of caffiene... if you are talking high doses like those found in some nutritional supplements with other substances that stimulate your CNS to produce and maintain levels of epinephrine and norepi i would have to guess that bp will rise... low dose caffiene or anything under id have to GUESS 200 mg should not cause in increase in bp unless you are a sensitive individual and methylxanthines (like caffiene) affect your bodys ability to produce ADENOSINE you should be ok...

IF you have a high blood pressure something over130/80 consistantly along with tachycardia (heart rate over 100 beats per minute)
STOP taking your supplements and consult your doctor

Hope this helped out a bit DETROITFIRE

Blood Pressure is recorded in two numbers: 120/80

The top number is systolic pressure, and the bottom number is diastolic pressure.

Category Systolic Diastolic

Normal < 120 < 80

Prehypertension 120–139 80–89

High blood pressure stage

Stage 1 hypertension 140–159 90–99

Stage 2 hypertension >=160 >=100

Depends on what your numbers are really. Obviously cutting out sodium to about 1000mg/day is a good idea to reduce blood pressure(Cutting it to 0mg/day is a BAD idea as you still need sodium for many bodily processes)
Also, a great supplement for high BP is Taurine. 6g/day divided into 3g AM and 3g PM can cut your systolic and diastolic both by about 10-15pts each.

My bloodpressure is 155/108. Im supposed to take pills but i had to quit my job to become a full time student. I started a diet and am eating much healthier now so i hope it help. Im 24, 5'8'' 203lbs 29percent fat. Is there any natural things to take that will assist BP?

Try dropping your body fat. Eat less salts and try taking hawthorne berry. This supplement could lower it somewhat. If hbp runs in your family, I would stay on the medicine. HBP can lead to many serious conditions if not treated.

Yea, its on both sides of the family. I got screwed. I am dieting and sheding fat. SO thats one step. I just dont have any money to get the medicine. Ill do some research on that hawthorne berry. Thanks

Taurine in the 6-10g/day range.

In your case 5g in the AM and 5g in the PM should reduce your BP by quite a bit.

155/108 is really high btw.

I would start Taurine right away if i were you. Here's why Taurine works:

For Hypertension

In humans with hypertension, 6 grams of taurine daily resulted in significant reductions in blood pressure, and this was independently verified in two other studies, one of them with only 3 g of taurine. Taurine does not cause a reduction in blood pressure in normotensive humans, indicating that the mechanism of action is specific to the pathology. Both effects in the CNS and modulation of hormone levels are involved [11].

Sweet man. Ya i know its high. I figured id wait a few more years till after i graduate college to get the pills again. But this is great. thanks man. ima go look at taurine.

Keep us posted on how your Taurine stack goes. I'm curious to see how much your BP will drop. So far I have yet to hear a person who's BP did not decrease through the use of Taurine and a good diet.

For someone with hypertension, since I am not a doctor I would not tell them to alter their sodium or potassium levels, unless of course the person is eating canned, and refined foods all day then I would suggest altering the diet as to lower the salts. I would not suggest altering potassium levels as potassium is a major part of the cardiac systems ability to maintain a normal cardiac rhythm... Consult your doctor as hypertension is a KILLER...
Also I am not sure maybe someone else can add to this... garlic might help with HTN?

Hope I was of assistance DETROITFIRE

I have been on BP meds for about 2 months now and my BP seems to be staying low although tonight I took it and it was 150/59 with a pulse rate of 72. This is much better than how I started wich was 189/98. The best part of it all is meds are very cheap right now at walmart only 4.00. I have been watching what I eat somewhat and the headaches are gone and I feel better when I get up in the mornings also. Thanks for everyones advice and more is always welcome!

please tell me you don't smoke.

glad to see your BP is better, you are 23, that BP is WAY to damn high!

Certain "supplements" can raise your BP to. Best of luck!

my blood pressure was high and now its actually low.....it hasnt been high in about 3 months, but now for the first time in my life its low. i dont get it.

How about the "no salt" sodium free salt? my ex, a nurse, sez that not good for me either. it has potassium chloride, pot. bitartrate, adipic acid, silicon dioxide. mineral oil, and fumaric acid. my bp at wal mart last night , 119/76, i'm 53, 5'9 ' 174lbs. taking 4ius jin and 75 mcg t-4. anybody heard anything bad about "no salt"

anyone heard of or try garlic for hbp?

Yes, it does work , of coarse along side a low fat, low sodium diet. My ex's BP went down in two months using Garlic pills, he went from 149/98 to 135/72, he really didn't watch his sodium intake, but I tried to get him to eat better. Its worth a try, just buy the odorless brand, you will be glad you did, and so will everyone else :qt:

i need a reliable monitor. and the doctors weren't really worried when my BP was 160/100.

My high blood pressure is well controlled with medication, and I have a very clean diet, body fat around 9%. I enjoy weight lifting, and use a Suunto t6 heart rate monitor which I really like. But it does not measure blood pressure. I sometimes wonder how high my BP gets during a high intensity workout. I never feel any discomfort, even when my heart rate is maxed out. So I don't know what the correlation is, if any, between heart rate and blood pressure. I sure would like to know more about this subject... :artist:

A prominent cardiothoracic surgeon specializing in aortic aneurysms placed arterial lines in powerlifters in a research study. His findings? Some powerlifters had blood pressures of >400 mmHg systolic and >250 mmHg diastolic during heavy lifts.

This is why any weightlifter with sudden onset chest pain while lifting or immediately after needs to be immediately evaluated by an emergency physician for possible aortic dissection. I've seen five weightlifters who have developed this while lifting.

mine has dropped since taking on a mild water pill. but what SD has just posted is osmething i always wondered about. i've done maximun lifts and then felt extremely dizzy and disoriented. one time it took me about 25 minutes to get my heart rate down to a normal level. that's why i won't hold my breath during lifting as much.

The protein is suspect because the average athlete can only use 1.8g/kg of bodyweight. The rest of the protein you take in is converted to fat, just like excess sugar. (More slowly, but it ends up as fat none-the-less. Protein needs for bodybuilders are obviously higher.)

But yes, eliminate saturated fats, and get your good fats: CLA, Flax, Omega 3 and 6. Eat your colors! Eat oatmeal every day. You'll be on track.

You don't smoke, do you?

Start with light cardio, walk at a slight incline, slowly, and check your heart rate every few minutes. You want to be at about 45% of max.
Make sure you stay there for at least 20 minutes, 3 times a week.

Good luck!
