Birth control pills and weight gain

Hello all.

I rarely post on this board but I figured it ws hte place ot be for this question:

If a woman begins using birth control pills, does that usually correspond to a noticeable weight gain, assuming all other things remain equal?

If so, why?

Thanks for the help.

Usually yes. But today, the pills have less estrogen than few years ago. The searchers are now able to definite the right (or so) amount of estrogen that a woman body needs to stop preparing itself to have a baby. I think that is a good and simple explanation. If some of you girls have a better scientific explanation, go ahead!

the pill makes you put on weight because it increases your appetite and is water retentive. I recently went off the pill, and im sure that it becuse of that that ive dropped 2kg and decreased bf%. It could also be cecause i tweeked my diet and started a walking long distances instead of running...
I will start taking it again, but am dreading it!

does anyone know of a type which is not terribly water retentive?

Several years ago, I tried several varieties of the "low dose" pills. Triphasil and OrthoTricyclen are 2 names I remember. They certainly made ME gain weight, especially in my hips and abs where I'd never had a problem before. It was horrible; I was hungry and crabby all the time. I turned into a shrew. (My poor husband  !)

I even increased my workouts and tightened my diet. That may have helped me not get any fatter, but I STILL could not w/in 10 pounds of my old size no matter what. (I'm small-framed, so 10 pounds was a lot for me.)

As soon as I got off the pill, the weight went away. Magic? I don't think so. The way I understand it, the pill works by making your body think it's already pregnant. So no wonder it turned me into a fat magnet/emotional roller coaster.

Alesse is probably the lowest estrogen pill on the market right now... but its so low that some women will spot on it... you have to be really stringent with the timing of the dose to minimize spotting... when i was taking it, if i'd miss a pill by about half a day i'd spot, if i missed one entirely auntie flo would pay her full visit...

As for weight gain, its really an individual thing... a woman would just have to go ahead and give it a try and see how it effects her...

There is a brand new pill out now (just approved in June or so) that is called YASMIN. This contains a duretic that really helps with the water retention. I've been on this now for 3 months and must say it's the best i've ever been on. OH, and it's antiandrogenic so it's great for the skin!! Hope this helps.

I've been using Demulen and have been for just shy of three years because of a hormone imbalance.

I haven't gainned weight from it nor do I feel water bloated.

That's not to say I was just likey to find the right pill for me, however, a doctor once said to me, "you can't gain weight from what you don't put into your mouth."

thanx guys..YASMIN sounds awsome, theres only one problem. Im from sutralia..they dont sell it here - does anyone know how I could order it? Internet.? I really wana try it!!:D
