Bayonne's 'Big Brother' castoff charged with online fraud
Sold 4 car engines, never delivered, cops say
Justin Sebik is in trouble again, police say.
The Bayonne resident who was kicked off a reality TV show for holding a knife to a woman's throat was arrested this week on charges he collected nearly $10,000 for four car engines he sold via e-mail but never delivered, Bayonne Police Detective Stephanie Burt said.
Sebik, 28, of Avenue E, set up auctions for four Honda Integra JDM type B engines on eBay in August, police said.
"The Internet is used so frequently with people," Burt said. "They use it for convenience, but it makes it more convenient for crime to occur."
Though the online auction house closed his account after receiving complaints, Sebik was still able to strike deals via e-mail with at least four people, Burt said.
The four - from Southport, N.C.; Radford, Va.; Sandy, Utah; and Chino, Calif. - each wired $2,430 to Sebik's account at Pamrapo Savings Bank on Avenue C, three on Aug. 14, and a fourth on Aug. 22, Burt said.
Each then tried to contact Sebik, one making seven attempts, before calling the Bayonne Police Department to file complaints, Burt said.
Others may have fallen for the alleged scam but have not yet contacted police, she said.
"The crime actually occurs where the money was accepted," Burt said, adding that Sebik will face charges in Bayonne even though he allegedly duped people across the country.
Burt and her partner, Keith Striffolino, gathered bank records and e-mails between Sebik and the alleged victims to document the scheme, she said.
Sebik, who was kicked off CBS's "Big Brother 2" in summer 2001 after putting a knife to a female roommate's throat while kissing her, was arrested Wednesday about 2:15 p.m. and held on $50,000 bail.
He is charged with four counts of theft by deception for falsely selling the engines.
Neither Sebik nor his lawyer could be reached for comment yesterday.
