Bf%?????

Hey guys, I've been curious lately about how much BF% I was so I got it tested today. At 5 9 164lbs I was 8.5% BF. I've heard that alot more strength can come from Fat. Although at the moment I dont really care about my physique although sometimes it looks like I do b/c of my weight, I do care about staying in my weight class. If I was to bump up my BF% would this give me more strength or is the fat=strength thing all a myth. Thanx

I'm not a pro but..I wouldn't set out just to gain fat. Eat ALOT often and train hard you'll gain muscle and some fat. I think the point most of the guys on this board are trying to make is don't worry about fat like a bodybuilder would....fat can help with leverage and cushion your joints. But I wouldn't set out to just gain fat.

what do you guys think?

Thanx for the reply. I really don't worry much about the % like a BB but I don't wanna have a big gut as a teen maybe when I get into my 20's I won't care soo much. When I say to gain some fat I dont mean like eating McDonalds for fat. I mean like take a flax oil which is a good essential fat. Or eat Peanut Butter that's natural so I won't get that H(whatever) oil that's bad fat. Thanx.
Anyone else have an opinion.

just up your calories and stay with the cleanest foods you can.you don't have to watch what you eat like a BB,BUT you should focus on red meats, chicken, tuna, fish, eggs, and when you have your carbs try to go with potatoes, brown rice, plain oatmeal,........you are going to put a little fat on regardless, but it's not to say a fat gut.muscle moves weight not fat,but extra fat does give certain degree of leverage.......

The mann good to have you around, glad u replied. The thing is I've gotten used to eating 4-5 times a day small meals and my daily intake exact is 1870 cals. 20%fat 38%carbs 42%protein(199g). Since I want to stay in my weight class I didn't wanna put on any weight, but I was wondering if my BF% was what might have been making me weaker or staying at the same bench. By the way I've been thinking about it and ever since I went to lift with Bob Youngs and he told me to put on some weight, I plan to do this after the high school meets and I will be entering real PL meets any advice to what weight class I should be in for that.

good to here from ya man,now that you met bob i don't have to tell you how awesome he is.take his advice, gain and hit some pr's....then if you want ,drop and try to maintain...........

hey glad I went I didn't really lift with him b/c in 3 hours I gotta go max out so I was on my 4 day rest and today i've already eaten twice and going to go eat some more in a few, but I was wondering how is it that you guys stay within your weight class or go over sometimes i.e. weight class 250, 4 days before your weight 258lbs. How do you guys drop 5-15lbs in about a week without losing strength??? Does it all come from fat, or you just don't eat for those 4 days?????Thanx.

you can drop water weight before a meet with no problem and no strength loss.....you can be 258 and a week from the meet lower carbs and keep your water high till the 2 days before and drop water.........it's not that your dropping fat, actually just water.most train over the class weight limit and come in the top of your class..........they may come a point though when you out grow your class ans are forced to move up....that will be up to you ,your lifts ............................

8.5% that is fucking lean! Did you try to do that or did it just work out that way? If you are naturally that lean you should be able to gain most of your weight in the form of lean muscle. BTW, I don't believe fat =strength, some of the "fatter" Pl's have alot of muscle under that . Water on the other hand can =strength. The example I'll use is take the water weight and retention Anadrol causes. It loads tons of water in those muscles, and other places, and the strength gains are through the roof. The December Powermag has a great article about making weight and keeping your strength for a meet. BTW, I would probably die trying to get to 8.5%.

OK so let me get this straight of what you guys are telling me at the moment with 8.5%BF( and i didn't really work at it it's just the way i'm eating is REALLY clean those fats are either essential fats or flax oil) and weighing 165lbs I can bump up to 175lbs or so and a week before my first meet cut on the carbs up on the water and 2 days before stop or cut the water and stil be able to compete in a 168lb weight class. At the moment I drink maybe 1.5-2.5 gallons of water a day.
