Best over the counter sleeping aid.

twippy23 - here are two types:

Sonata

SONATA Sleeping Pills is indicated for the short-term treatment of insomnia. SONATA Sleeping Pills is not indicated for use in pediatric patients. Although SONATA improved sleeping time from baseline in clinical trials, it has not been shown to increase total time sleep or decrease awakenings vs. placebo.
Hypnotics should generally be limited to 7 to 10 days of use, and reevaluation of the patient is recommended if hypnotics are taken for more than 2 to 3 weeks.

Ambien

AMBIEN can be very effective in the short-term treatment of insomnia. While natural sleep is best, AMBIEN pills can help you sleeping , stay asleep, and not awaken prematurely.
AMBIEN Sleeping Pills works with a natural brain chemical called GABA. GABA is one of at least 18 major brain chemicals known as neurotransmitters. Neurotransmitters control communication among neighboring brain cells by either increasing or decreasing their electrical activity.

You should ask the pharmacy because they might recommend you something.

These are not OTC in the US.

Some that have worked for me:

Benadryl (same ingrediate in many of the OTC sleep aids just a lot cheaper - generic Benadryl)
5-HTP
Melatonin
GABA
Valarian (Is a little liver toxic so I do not reccomend it.)
Kava Kava (Highly liver toxic so I do nto reccomend it.)

Good luck!

These are Good

5-HTP
Melatonin
ZMA

Add a glass of red wine after dinner and you're set for a good night's sleep

Don't take the ZMA with calcium. Take it about 20 minutes before you sleep. You will wake up with a huge boner.

Unisom gelcaps seem to be very affective. My favorite has been NyQuil though, it works very well for me. Simply Sleep and Sominex are pretty effective too.

Valerian is good. I use it a couple of times a week... but dont know about liver toxicity (maybe doublebicep is right!!) I have never felt bad using it.

Apart from that Xanax is the best, but this is not OTC and is extremely powerful!!

Term

I like Simply Sleep, same people that make Tylenol I think.

I use 2 tylenol pm occasionally but there is supposed to be a new one out there that has the active sleep ingredient without the acetominophine. Can't remember the name of it though.

2 Tylenol PM
6mgs Melatonin
1 Coors Original Long Neck
50mg Zinc

Fuck yeah dude, now you're speaking my language. I would throw in a couple drags of some good mary jane.

i use letrimin pm (spelling?), you find them right next to unisom. i has the same active ingredient as most of the sleeping aids but it also has a pain killer that targets the lower body (dont know if it helps but i have no pain in my legs so im happy)

Unisom is diphenhydramine HCL, an antihistamine, not really bad for you and not particularly stressful to the liver. However, tolerance can build quickly, and any dose over 100mg can lead to dysphoria, a very unpleasant feeling.

Dosylamine succinate is also an antihistamine, again, not particularly toxic, but not something to take all the time. Tolerance is an issue, and doses over, say, 75 mg can lead to bizarre experiences. I prefer doxylamine to diphenhydramine, although I hate them both.

Valerian--nothing. Kava--nothing.

Ambien can be addicting, and can also be a deleriant. If you don't go to sleep you can hallucinate and engage in some erratic behavior.

The best sleep aid, by far, is GHB, but of course that is illegal so forget it.

I say valerian is nothing, but that isn't completely true, I suppose. You might try 600mg valerian, 50 inositol and 100 5-HTP to get to sleep. This combination works well on my fiancee.

Fukkenshredded - good point - diphenhydramine HCL is the active ingrediate in many of the OTC sleep meds and combination pain med / sleep med. It is *much* cheaper to simply buy generic Benadryl. Besides, I don't need liver stressing meds along with my sleep med.

doxylamine (I think Sominex sp?) is good. It also has a generic.

I alternate between doxylamine and diphenhydramine HCL when I need a little assistance sleeping. When I want to be knocked out Ambien works everytime.
