Barry: Blame the Bad Jobs Market on ATM's and Airport Kiosks!

Obama blames unemployment on ATMs - National post-partisan | Examiner.com

"There are some structural issues with our economy where a lot of businesses have learned to become much more efficient with a lot fewer workers. You see it when you go to a bank and you use an ATM, you don’t go to a bank teller, or you go to the airport and you’re using a kiosk instead of checking in at the gate."

This guy clearly has no idea on how the economy, productivity or jobs work.

And the ultimate irony here is the reason companies spend big money reducing jobs is because Barry has declared war on employers.

Yeah, sounds to me like he's blaming the unemployment rate on ATMs. Good catch!

Reminds me of a lunch I was at yesterday - talking with this rich dude and his wife about one or two of the companies were raising money for. During the convo it turned out she was a total tea party nutjob, talking about how wind farms are the reason why the bald eagle is an endangered species or some shit.

Anyway, one of our clients has developed an RFID technology (which IBM just picked up) which can accurately inventory an entire warehouse full of goods at the click of a button. Walmart, Home Depot, etc all are looking to buy it. She started on another tirade about how that was going to further increase the unemployment rate which led to her asking if the founder of our firm is a liberal.

The skirt steak I had was for shit, too. And it was her restaurant.

An enviro-whacko Tea Party member?

Odd.

The only reason the kiosks and self-checkouts are successful is because when a company take our local home depot for example installs a block (4) self check machines they then lay four clerks off. We now have four machines attended by one worker.

It's much slower and really shitty customer service and a net loss of three in-store jobs. But those machines must be manufactured and maintained/repaired/installed I'm thinking you would end up with a net gain or net balance.

It obviously eliminates clerk jobs, but it creates jobs for machine manufacturing and programming.

What makes our government's policies so cynical the combination of two things:

1) Make it economically impractical for companies to employ people in lower positions (i.e. clerk).

2) Make sure that the new jobs that are created (i.e. machine design and assembly) can't be done by US workers because they are too poorly educated thanks to our wonderful nationalized education system.

So we drive the jobs out of here then make sure we can't catch the new jobs.

BTW - that was a total crap article and whatever quotes were in there, I am sure were total out of context.

I wasn't that interested in the author's spin on it either. The quote itself is pretty complete though. Barry just isn't that sharp when it comes to economics.
