Bar Pad Thing? during Multiple Sets of Squats?

I use it for comfortability, I rather be comfortable then in pain later.. Just sayin

you will be in a lot more serious pain when you hurt yourself from having poor stability which promotes sloppy form...

it is not uncomfortable anyways... that 475 was just nice on my back... you probably dont place the bar properly... use a low bar squat until you can get your traps big enough to support a high bar setup...
 
you mean the tampon?
learn to do low bar squats... the bar should rest just under your traps, you should have a ridge of muscle right there that it will rest on...
also keep your chest high/up and shoulders back and tight while unracking the bar...
getting closer to 500........

Also, I find that pushing your elbows up and back when you grab the bar in the rack will help you to find that ridge of muscle in your back, that the bar should rest on.

And make sure the rack is set low so you can get the proper position in the bar. Some people set the bar too high in the rack and it ends up too high on their back. There's nothing wrong with having to extend up 6 inches or so to unrack the bar.
