Bar Pad Thing? during Multiple Sets of Squats?

oxymoron

My back and neck hurts like hell when getting to 3+ sets of squats. So I just deal, whatever. Well there was a guy finishing up in the squat cage and he had one of those velcro padded rolls. Anyways he saw me messing with it and he said go ahead if I wanted to use it while he does deads.

I thought I'd gone to HEAVEN!!!!

Are these frowned upon? I hadn't seen one in yrs. Surely for an old man they're fine.

I used those while doing zerker squats in the past... Honestly just use it if you want to its personal prefrence

hmmm..no..it creates an instability on the bar and if the bar is bothering your spine youre not locking up your back correctly

p.s. last I checked I still had a 'gina and don't use the little pad for the bar.... make of it what you will :)

I will be 45 next week and i dont care if i am 80 i will never use that thing on any bar on my back. I think you need to build up your traps so the bar has muscle to rest on. I have naturally huge traps so i guess i am lucky.

Nah i hear ya 4T. I just ripped some kid the other day for using straps for pull ups. I know its not much but my working sets are 245 and that shit starts tear into the high pts on my spine lol. I'm prolly not resting the bar properly on my upper back.

I find the increase diameter of the bar makes it harder to hold in place. It's uncomfortable at first but after a while you get used to the discomfort. I I have not use 1 for decades and I would suggest you try getting use to the bare bar but it's your workout at the end of the day.

Your simply not getting tight enough. Your entire upperback needs to be tight as well as the rest of your body. I never have any pain from holding the bar. Granted im in my twenties, but if I can hold 800lbs with no pain you should be able to hold 245. One of my buddies is 66 and he squated 530 in competion without a bar pad. Its all technique.

I guess I'll have to get some video of me squatting my little 225 for ya (and I bet I weigh less than you)...and Im 35 with spinal arthritis and 3 blown discs in my t-spine
2 blown discs in my l-spine
my PR is 315 for 3 at the moment...

let me reiterate...you're not locking up (flexing) your back enough before you're picking the bar up

you mean the tampon?
learn to do low bar squats... the bar should rest just under your traps, you should have a ridge of muscle right there that it will rest on...
also keep your chest high/up and shoulders back and tight while unracking the bar...
getting closer to 500........
