Badasses at the gym

Since we have a morons at the gym thead, lets do a badass at the gym since you tend to run into some people at the gym who are complete badasses.

Theres this guy at my gym. He's a hispanic gentleman in his early to mid twenties. He doesn't talk much, he doesn't grunt or slam weights. He just lifts. His cleans are very precise. Watching him clean is like watching an olympic lifter clean. Really precise. He also squats a whole hell alot. I haven't seen him max, but he squats 275 with precision form. Doesn't grunt, doesn't stress, doesn't even make a noise. Real clean and precise squatting. His front squats are even nicer. Same thing, lesser weight, but super good form as always. Almost robotic.

I've sen him deadlift too. Same thing. Good clean precise form. No stress at all.

Then theres this other dude I see. He's not a big guy either. I saw him today squatting 225's for reps. Not much weight, but he squeezes a few more reps during each set. Just when you think he's done doing his set of 8 reps, he squeezes out 3-4 more. He struggles, but gets them because he really wants it.

Theres other badasses at my gym, but these two gentleman really caught my attention. It's always a pleasure seeing them there doing their shit. I don't talk to them though because I don't talk to anyone. I just notice them.

ya i keep my eyes open and notice others how they put there routines together and form, try n make sense of it and get ideas for changing up my own routines when they get stale...but for the most part im the bad ass! haha j/k
seriously tho the gym i go to isnt that hardcore... mostly curls in the squat rack, fat guys doing a million crunches etc etc....a few bb`s tho i can give props too

I have the pleasure and privilege to work out with some of the strongest men on the planet. We all joke around and have a good time. We needle each other like brothers would, but when someone is in the rack or pulling or whatever, it is all business. We may cheer them on or encourage them to get that one or two extra reps, but that is about it. These guys never make a scene about how many plates are on a bar, or intimidate others that may be around, or do anything that is not considered welcoming even to the guy that can barely bench the bar. I seem to be the exception, but the only yelling I do is at the weights when I hit a big PR, but it is not intended to be a badass, it is intended to intimidate the weight to be scared of me, and not have the balls to get on my bar - that is how I train, and have trained for years. Sometimes I may offend, but it is never my intent.

My whole point here, is that while the gym douchbag seems to get the most attention, they are actually the fewest in number to those that act in a professional "no shit" attitude.

And I swear, the higher the poundage, the more humble the lifter. Unless you are talking about Kirk Karwaski - he can do what ever in the hell he wants.

B-

I agree with the whole thing of the higher the poundage the more humble the lifter. Every once in awhile i see someone benching over 400lbs and the thing these guys have all in common it's they are quiet oh and they all do countless sets of chinups.

one guy was deadlifting 475 with straps in my little town family YMCA and everyone was looking because it was fucking loud. I was waiting to get in, and litteraly after his first rep some chicks stopped on the tredmil and just stared at him because it was echoing throughout the whole gym and nobody knew what deadlifts are. Everyone was asking each other wtf he was doing lol

yep, been seeing them in gyms for years.... and its always the thin wirey guy that head right to the pullup bar and blows everyone away. looking at the weight these guys lift, its usually a bit more than bodyweight for reps. then i see some deadlifting a pretty good amount. i see big guys doing a lot of weight, but the skiinny giy looks like he has more weight for his bodyweight..there's badasses in all gyms, but the ones that i see, ll seem to be the same. the thin former x country runner, or swimmer..
seen one thin guy doing at least 100 dips.. sets of 20..hardly any rest..

Very little to prove to anyone.
They are tired because of the heavy lifting.
They understand that being aggressive burns more calories AND increases cortisone/cortisol.

:)

A rather large fella asked me if he could hop in on the flat bench with me i finished my set and offered him the bench... thats when he proceded to curl the weight i left on there :(

That's tough on the ego. Work hard bro!

random old dude doing pause reps with 315 on the flat bench...........sets of ten flawless form and silent....then I relized that was just the warm up for the set of 455 for 5.

2 seconds in the hole with 455.............sick. repeating it 5 times= god like

Quad's produces freaks. This guy doesn't shave his body hair either.

There was this older guy at the gym who looked like Alton Brown from the cooking channel. This guy had humongous tree trunk legs. They were huge. I watched him do some squats and he did them in 15-20 rep range for like 10 sets. He only went up to 225 pounds, but I bet he can do more since it was so easy for him.

wierd never seen anyone who i would consider a badass before, but there was a kid at the gym yesterday he is like 17 or 18 was benching 220 with his feet on the bench and his spotter was just looking around the gym not even paying attention and this kid was just reppin the thing by himself...

220 is a big bench at my gym.

Yeah same with my gym 220 would be considered pretty damn good. No one except me even deadlifts at my gym.

me and 3-5 others deadlift. the average bench at my gym is somewhere between 120 and 200...

I just got 210 yesterday! Okay just had to share... Anyway at my gym there's one guy who does 205 for sets of 10 benching but that's like the highest bencher....

If 220 is heavy in your gym on bench you need a new place to workout. It makes you lazy when you are the strongest guy in your gym.

I don't believe that. Lifting isn't a team sport. What other people lift doesn't have any efect on your lifting.

no way my gym is full of nerds, fat people and wannabe's and i love it.

did i mension theres only eight 45lb plates on the whole gym? haha

are you serious? how the hell are you supposed to do leg presses or anything regarding legs for that matter.

Everyone is different but I am very competitive by nature so having really strong guys or decent bodybuilders training at my gym always keeps me pushing myself. Also there is a lot to be learned from these guys or maybe they could be your training partner and push you further than you could by yourself... You never know. I just don't like when I am the strongest or biggest/.

Yeah dude I could give a f#$% about what other people are lifting. I just look at myself and try to improve. Been lifting for about 10 months and I keep getting stronger, not paying attention to what other people at my gym lift.

Lol you think that's bad...we only have 2, yes 2 45-plates, and only 370 pounds of total barbell weight. There's only a machine leg press thing so I don't worry about loading that. Our heaviest dumbbell is 85, and I just got 8 reps at that for dumbbell bench so I'm definitely outgrowing my gym. AAAHHH!

But my gym is free, and my parents don't want to pay for a gym membership and I can't afford it yet, so it looks like I'm stuck for now. Plus, there's barely ever anyone at my gym, so I get the place to myself. When I deadlift it is ridiculous, I use all these little 5 pound plates to get up to my max.

what is wrong with wanting to be the strongest?... when i see someone lifting more than me it only pushes me to do more myself... sure i know i will probably never set any world records... but i damn well will try to be the best i can, and if i see someone else lifting in my gym, somthing that is within reasonable reach, damn well that is going to drive me harder to dig deep and make the lift...
dont get me wrong... i am very motivated when i am by myself... but the sake of competition, the adrenaline.. that can take you past your previous limits...

umm there's only about four of those that i've noticed. awesome form, all of them. deliberate, precise, flawless. weights aren't really super impressive, but the concentration and focus is.

got caught staring a couple times! very embarrassing, i don't recommend it.

I don't mind :artist:

of course you would. how would you like some pervert starring at you while you workout?!

i try to be very discreet when i "stare" at anyone. obviously i'm not very good at that. now i sound like a stalker or something.lol

the leg press there is a machine one with like a stack and cable thing which goes up to 500 I think. No one gets even close to the whole stack.

Biggest squat I saw there was 220 for about 8 reps to parrallel or 204 x 5 ATG...

Most people who go there dont train legs. Biggest DL Iv seen is somewere around 4 plates for 1 rep.

ya and the Db's go up to 88's lolol

iwas that guy in my hometown 10 years ago.very awkward.i deadlifted 465-7 times and you know after you just annihilate a monster set and you rack the wait an d its like a round of applause should burst out-but instead it doesnt.its old ladys looking at you like you just slapped a puppy.weird.needless to say i left the ymca for good.

You ever notice how ugly people say they don't what other people think of them ect. Its like a weak guy saying he doesn't care what everyone else is doing in the gym... Its part of being a male. Its called being competitive. Being an alpha male. How are going to sit here and say you don't care what anyone else is doing but you are taking steroids... Cmon.

yeah man but that only goes so far...

other day i was doing dips..

i did like 8 or 9 deep dips, and the kid after me did 1 more

then i did 6, he did 8

then i did 5 he did 6

then just out of curiosity i did 1 and he did 2

but his werne't even like dips... they were fucking going down not even 1/4 and then him looking at me.

Yesterday i saw him in the senior commons after school (i am a senior, i think he's a sophmore) and i said "Hey 1 more" and he blushed lol

Why are so many guys such pussies now days? Even with the artificial hormones. Fucking get over it. Lifting to me is about raw intensity and aggression. I love it. I love lifting heavy weight and breaking personal records. With lifting there is no fluff. Either you can lift the weight or you can't. It takes a lot of work. Thats why I love it.. Of course I am my biggest critic and competitor but I always take note of what my fellow gym go-ers are doing. Maybe thats why I am almost 230 pounds with about 9% bodyfat and the only cycle I ever ran was test prop 350mg a week for four weeks. Lifing by nature requires intensity which rules out 95% of the population to be good at so don't water it down.

I bet you pushed yourself further though because of the competition than you would have if you were by yourself.

I'm not trying to offend anyone but I just can't stand the false modesty. This is a discussion form primarily for steroid users... Having a hard core mind set is pretty much a prerequisite for any chemically enhanced athlete or gym rat.

Depends on the degree of it. If i was someone like it would probably motiate me to hit a new PR or pump the crap out of my bis, basic male instinct i guess... I read somewhere that working out in the presence of an attractive girl increases the test levels throughout the workout.

Lol @ the stalker idea

I was a member at the local Planet Fitness and a lot of the time my workouts would blow people away. Why I dont know. doing deads, cleans, weighted dips, and shrugging 500lbs looked crazy coming from a 5'9" 165lb 25 year old.

that makes complete sense lol.. gotta get some hot girls at your new gym and put the tredmills near the front so everyone can see them

would definitely increase the amount of people who join :)

What was the atmosphere like at planet fitness? I heard you couldn't grunt or drop weights.

lmao at planet fitness you're not even supposed to push yourself

there is this thing called the "lunk alarm" that goes off if anyone is doing something wrong

their definition of wrong includes lifting too much, grunting, deadlifting (so i've heard), all sorts of stupid shit. It's not a competitive environment and not one where you are supposed to go balls to the wall

I heard they serve pizza there and have a tootsie roll candy jar at the check in counter.

God the more I hear about that planet fitness place the more I want to uppercut everyone there.

I completely agree but what I meant earlier about not caring what other people lift is that even though not many people lift hard at my gym I am internally motivated so I keep lifting hard regardless of others.
