aspirating

I am very confused about what people mean when they use the term "aspirate" in this forum. To me this word means to draw fluid into a syringe, but in the contexts that this word is often used on this board, this definition doesn't make sense.

My thought is that people on here talk about aspirating when they inject and then pull back on the syringe to see if there is any blood. If there is blood, that means you have hit a vein and you should choose a different site to inject.

Am I correct? Is this what people mean?

Aspirating= Insert the needle into injection site...Pull back on plunger to draw up one of two things...An air bubble or two, or blood. If you get blood your in a blood vessel...Can't inject here...must find a new spot. If you don't get any blodd you're in a safe injection site.

you are correct on the deffinition of aspirate. Pulling back on a syringe is not aspirating but you are checking to see if you hit a vessel and if you did and got blood then you have aspirated.

not always true...please check my post. i just did that and thought i was safe only to find out that i injected into a vein!!!
